2014 is shaping up to be a HUGE year for basketball in Colorado. On the men's side, we could have five national level recruits in the state, with two of them having the potential to be 4/5* guys right now. But the women's side can't be ignored. I can't stress enough how huge it would be to land the trio of Akigbogun, Morgan and Reese. All three are on the HoopGurlz Top 100 watch list for 2014 right now and I know Reese has been getting some serious national attention. Wouldn't surprise me if Morgan and Akigbogun were as well.

Lappe's doing her part, but it's going to be a HUGE battle to close the borders on this one.

Looks like I posted that too soon. We can now add Jordan Molyneaux to the list of 2014 Colorado women who are on the Top 100 watch list. As a post player, she'd be another that would be a nice get for Lappe & Co.

I think we could add Rachel Bell from Tennessee to the list for 2014. There have been a few indications on Twitter that CU has offered her, including connections with our staff and this:

It sounds like she's having a great season, putting up 33 points on two separate occasions so far. From The Daily Herald in Tennessee last month:

She doesn't get much love on what's left of the HoopGurlz site, but the offers she's getting speak for themselves. That @WeWorkHoops account has also mentioned interest from Boston College and Florida State. It would be pretty great to invade SEC territory and have her come out West.

Nevermind, Bell committed to Vanderbilt. Her visit to CU on the weekend of that Kansas debacle couldn't have helped us much.

It appears that Mikayla Reese is re-opneing her recruiting. She had previously committed to Oklahoma State. Not sure that CU is still interested as they have a verbal from Brecca Thomas out of Texas.

Boy is the news slow on the women's recruiting front. There just isn't a lot of info.

In theory CU should be in hot pursuit of a post player.

Nice. And I talked to someone who said she was planning on going elsewhere now too. Apparently she got over 50 offers in the contact period in July. Hoping we can land her now.

I assume you're referring to an in-state prospect?

It would seem that CU would be much more attractive than even a year ago at this time due to last season's success and predictions of continued success (top + NCAA tourney). And we know CU wants to keep the top players at home.

With Ky departure CU could sign five this fall, but I would guess they'll only do so if they find players that they're very excited about.

According to Prospect Nation (a pay site) Mikalya Reese was not looking at CU but interestingly one of her schools is Drake. That tells me she was being recruited by Coach Baranchak when she was on Lappe's staff and that is where the relationship was formed, not with CU. The feeling I got last year after Reese verballed to Okie State was that our coaches were fine with that since they had who they wanted in Kyleesha Weston. A lot has now changed but with 2013 Desiree Harris and 2014 Brecca Thomas, don't know if Reese would be the best use of a spot.

Got more info last night and CU isn't in the running for Reese sadly. Too bad. I was hoping to land her even with Thomas, but I can understand why both CU & Reese would be hesitant to have two PGs in one class.

Some more players from the class of '14 that CU is recruiting per Chris Roemer of Collegiate Girls Basketball Report:

    Desire Finney 5-10 Berkeley, CA

Charise Holloway 5-9 Tracy, CA St. Mary's HS

As MObuff posted in a separate thread, it looks like CU got a verbal from Zoe Correal (CA-14) this weekend. She is a 6'4" post, which obviously fills a need after Hargis graduates.

MarkW mentioned Charise Holloway, but it sounds like she committed to Arizona.

It also sounds like Kennedy Leonard (TX-15) visited CU last week. Based on what's available online, Leonard is a point guard who could play the 2. Her Cy-Fair Elite team won Nike Nationals earlier this month.

Man, we got shut out on all the Colorado kids? Not happy about that. I love ALL that choose CU but there is nothing like rooting for a great player from the home state going to CU.

Saw on twitter this morning another CO player committed to a DII school. Why are the commits from CO going out of state and did we fill all of our scholarships?

Can't have filled the scholarships....we have 3 seniors this year and don't have all scholarships filled this year. So I think they could take 5 if they found the right players and they only have 2 verbals that I know of.

How much of the lack of info out there is us struggling in recruiting, and how much of it is the lack of solid women's basketball recruiting info out there? Anyone know?

I know nothing but I have an opinion............... The lack of info is mostly due to the thin coverage that WBB recruiting gets when compared to MBB. But I definitely believe we are struggling in recruiting. I have a number of ideas as to why .... First, Coach Baranchak was the real deal as the recruiting coordinator and Coach Finley has not yet been able to fill her shoes. So many WBB recruits are verballing so early and you have to have established the relationships way earlier. Finley came from Harvard. That's a school that has a singular attraction for the top students so the relationships exist as much or more with the idea of Harvard than with the coach. Now she is having to do that relationship building. Second it appears that the coaches are targeting the Midwest again, in addition to the west coast. This is new territory and again takes time. Third I have seen that the coaches have gone after a number of "top 100" type recruits in these areas but have come up short. I question whether they had a proper backup plan for that eventuality. The recruits that are still waiting into their senior years to verbal are also top recruits. But by the time they decide, most of the "second tier" of talent has already verballed. And one thing you see very little of in WBB is players de-commiting once they have verballed. So if you are after those top players who are deciding relatively late and you don't get them, what are you left with?? You have to remember that there is a much more limited pool of WBB talent that is even close to D-1 ready coming out of high school as compared to the guys.
