2017: Recruiting News, Notes & Official Visitors

That recent round of offers... damn. Aiming very high.
I like it. When they made all those initial offers in Florida for the 16 class I didn't know what to expect. Hopefully we can have similar interest this round because those players are legit.

All it takes is pulling 3-4 of those guys in each class and things will start turning quick. There are some studs down there.

And now it looks like a quarterback has been offered, "dual threat" Avery Davis from the Cedar Hill Longhorns in Texas.

http://247sports.com/Player/Avery-Davis-38424 (247 showing offers also from Kansas, Oregon State, SMU and Texas Tech, although from his own tweet there might be a couple more.)

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3734925/avery-davis

Stats- http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/avery-davis/a-1cr04GEeOZXQAmVebBJg/gendersport/football-stats.htm
(Look pretty darn good for the dual threat type. In 4 games this year as a junior, .659 accuracy with 188 yards a game passing, 8 TDS and 0 interceptions. Also 82 yards a game with a 9.3 yds./ carry average and 4 TD's while running. His team is ranked #4 in Texas and #31 nationally by Maxpreps.)

Hopefully they offer his teammate Charleston Rambo, 6'1" 165" 4* WR. Not having a big year yet, but he will blow up over the next few months.

And it looks like the Buffs may have made another offer to a young man in Texas, this time 4* (247) running back Eno Benjamin from Wylie East High School in Wylie TX.

http://247sports.com/Player/Eno-Benjamin-58645 (Per 247, no elite school offers yet, but some are shown as interested. 13 offers so far (not including CU's) per 247 from schools including Duke, Boise State, Texas Tech, Houston, Miami of FL, Iowa, etc..)

Edit- removed the other tweet, as offer was actually to a 2016 class player.

Looks like another offer to a Bishop Gorman defensive back (joining Bubba Bolden- see above post) has been made- this time to corner back Alex Perry. (24/7 shows him as a "hard" ASU commit (commit made 11/2/14). Don't know what the tweet means about Boulder being his "2nd home"?)

24/7- http://247sports.com/Player/Alex-Perry-49708 (In addition to ASU, shows offers from Utah, UNLV and Oklahoma State.)

Now that my season is over I'll provide a few of my observations on some of CU's '17 targets that I coached against this season.

Marcus McElroy, RB, Mullen - Watched a lot of film on the kid leading up to our game against Mullen and, defensively, we were very concerned about him. He has the speed to take it 80+ on any given play, and doesn't need a whole lot of room to do it. He's listed at 5'11" 197 on Rivals, but he's definitely bigger than that right now (Max Preps has him at 6'0" 205, which is definitely closer to what I saw on the field). The one knock on him, IMO, is that he just isn't really a tough runner, and goes down at first contact way too often. He doesn't seek out contact and is often looking to bounce it outside instead of taking it up between the tackles where the hole is. This works at the CO high school level, but will not translate in the Pac 12. In our game, specifically, he was a non factor outside of a couple decent runs, but you could see the talent was clearly there. If he can get a tougher mindset when running, he has a chance to be a good one.

Dylan McCaffrey, QB, Valor - He and UNC (Northern CO) WR commit, Ben Waters, are the only two game breakers for Valor's offense this year. I coached against Dylan over the summer at CU's 7v7 camp and I thought he threw the ball pretty well. I didn't see anything special at the time in terms of his arm, but his accuracy and timing were definitely there. After playing Valor in a real game this season, you could definitely see the potential in both his passing and running abilities. He definitely doesn't have Christian's speed or elusiveness (not many do), but he is taller and still runs pretty well. Would definitely bring the DT ability that we desperately need at the QB position. Putting the physical tools aside, Valor runs a very sophisticated offense with an NFL/College sized playbook (no exaggeration). I'm not saying everything is as complex as the college or pro game, obviously, but they run every kind of formation from 5 wide Shotgun to under center, with 3 RBs and 2 TEs. They go unbalanced at times, have a lot of shifts, trades and pre snap motion, and they seem to give him the freedom at the line to make adjustments after seeing the defense. I believe he is the full package at QB that has the potential to be a game changer for CU if they were to convince him to come to Boulder.

Noah Elliss, NT, Valor - Listed at 6'4" 315 lbs... Has offers from TCU, CU, Utah, Utah St. and Washington. Has the potential to be a contributor for CU from day one, IMO. The kid is an absolute monster in the middle and caused so many problems for our traditionally powerhouse running game. We don't have the biggest OL by any means, but he broke through double teams like they were nothing, and short of our guys cutting him, we didn't have an answer. I don't have a whole lot of technical insight into the NT position, but he is pretty athletic for a kid his size and with another year to refine his game, I think CU has to make this kid their top in-state priority for 2017 (along with McCaffrey).

Jake Moretti, OT, Pomona - I don't have technical insight into OL play either, but all I can say is that this kid is a mountain of a 17 year old. He's listed at 6'5" 285 and I would imagine, he'll be up to 300 lbs by the time he steps on campus. He would push for a starting job from day one at CU, but unfortunately, would rather play his college football in Ohio.

Looklike a new offer for 2017 is out- this one to TE Brian Polendey from Denton, TX (Guyer HS)

http://247sports.com/Player/Brian-Polendey-82522 (Looks like we're his 6th offer, with others (so far) being Houston, Duke, Arkansas, Michigan and Illinois. 247 has him as the 8th ranked tight end in the 2017 class.)
