What's your honest first impression of the Boise State offense? No peeking at the stats or deep analysis of the game, just give me your impression, a "prolonged glance at the TV, don't know who's playing" type of impression : Run first or Pass first offense, or Balanced?

What would BSU typically do on 1st down?

I won't comment until later, I just want your honest impressions.

Your question is where the problem comes in defending them. They will normally run but just when the D gears up to stop the run they are likely to pass or even throw in a gadget play. The D wants to focus down on the run but they hesitate a little bit because they are afraid of getting burned. As a result they can't quite commit to doing anything well. The running plays are effective and yet they still get beat on the pass plays.

The offense is basically focused on the run but their run works because of the constant threat of doing something else.

I think their offense was effective but not sustainable in a major conference. Oregon was over hyped but they have a punchers chance of winning the PAC-10...:)

Oregon has no chance of the Pac 10 crown.
USC, Cal, Oregon St all will be better.

Really was very unimpressed with either team...this being the 1st game of the season it's tough to say, but all in all, both teams looked like garbage out there.

My impression was a "pass-first team". When they ran, it appeared to be only for effect rather than yardage; lots of east-west running for no good downfield outcome, advanced the sticks only a couple yds. at a crack, unless they found space on a cutback. Shoot, their backs were tiny and had little power.

Going to read the stats to see if they back up what I saw.

My impression was that they should have scored 30, shot themselves in the foot A LOT.

My impression is that we are not the only ones with a kicker situation. :smile2:

I'll have to go read all the bios for every player on Boise State in order to give an informed opinion.

    Kellen Moore is really good.

Oregon's defense and offense suck. (looks bigger than first game jitters)

With the exception of USC, the Pac10 is a joke.
Boise is a run first team, but unlike the Buffs, they have a QB that can throw a good deep Ball. This keeps the safeties deep and the LB’s in the middle, therefore opening up the running game.

I didn't see BSU use two running backs in the backfield that often...I don't see how we can make a comparsion between BSU and CU if the Buffs do become a power running team this season.

Then you weren't watching very much. Some of thier best runs came out of the I formation.

Balanced, excellent QB, everyone knows their assignments and executes every detail, especially blocking downfield. Absolutely sustainable in any conference. I like BSU's offense more than the spread. It uses a lot of 4 WR looks, but doesn't rely on a dual-threat QB. There is a lot of looks and a lot going on.

The offense is sustainable, but BSU would need more depth and talent to compete in the B12 South for sure. But the scheme would work. I think they would win the North this year flat out, and the last 5 years also.

My first impression is that those stupid wings on the ducks unis did not help one bit. Maybe if the helmets had actual beaks on them, they would have had a chance.

Those stupid wings on the Ducks unis had the unfortunate effect of looking more like an ivy pattern on my grandmothers china dishes. If I were on Oregon player I would feel like a complete idot wearing that ****....

While I was not the least bit impressed with BSU, it doesn't matter. They have, probably, the weakest schedule of any top 20 team. They could easily run the table and clamor for a BCS game. What a joke.

Gimmicky offense that would not work in the Big XII. I still saw reverses, an attempted QB throwback that was blown up, swinging gate-ish fake FG formation etc.. I just don't see how these gadgety plays would work week in, week out. I think Boise will miss Ian Johnson. Boise needs to use Harper more as Avery was pretty ineffective for the majority of the game.

I could see them losing to Nevada or Utah St.

why does it work against Oklahoma and Oregon the last two years and not week in and week out? It's a tough offense to defend, and I'm not talking about the gadget plays. They have a really good pass/run mix and I think they could have put 40 on the Ducks last night if they would have quit fumbling it away.

Oregon - Complete ineptitude courtesy of the recently departed Helfrich and too much confidence. I think BSU legitimately beat Oregon last night, but Oregon helped them out a lot and made them look a lot better than they are. watch Oregon next week, and again vs USC. They are garbage and it definately showed last night.

Oklahoma - 1. Stoops is legendary for being unprepared in bowl games. 2. OU plays a full season of one battle after the next in the B12 South, BSU was well rested after a season of playing powder-puff; they had the opportunity to prep for that one for 16 weeks.

Not to take anything away from BSU, but I hope they make a major BCS game this year and get exposed so we can all put this crap to bed and stop talking about what if. Utah was legit last year, they dominated AL, but they still got the same advantages as BSU gets with a majority easy schedule (although TCU and BYU aren't exactly creampuffs).

No BSU in championship game...If I have to watch another SEC domination in the MNC, I will be PISSED!

Gimmick Offenses??? Those are complete offensive packages out of a spread formation...not trick plays and "gimmicks" you may call them "gimmicks" because they are an innovative adjustment to an standard offense and not many teams can pull it off to that degree because of the complexity...not tricks

I think Missouri would have handled them at home but your point is taken, Boise State would have been in the upper half of the Big 12 North..No doubt about it..

I was impressed by Boise's defense.. I don't think Oregon is bad as they showed last night but I think part of the reason why they looked so bad was Boise's play of defense..

Give credit to Boise.. They were sloppy on offense but their defense smacked Oregon in the mouth.

Which is the point I am making about BSU's offense itis not a collection of gimmicks either, sure some come into play but the rest is just as legit as those offenses are.

Because they can open the whole bag of tricks for those games. If Oklahoma had been say just a division game for Boise St, do you think all the hook n ladders and statue of liberty plays would work again? No way! Once teams see those plays, they can prepare for them and shut them down. Without those trick plays, Boise does not beat Oklahoma.

Or do you think that the swinging gate FG formation will work again this season? Hell, once Oregon had seen it once, it didn't work the second time.

Boise is a good team. But, I don't see their gimmicky offense working week in week out in a conference that has good athletes all over the field. We've seen a very similar offense (Dan loves his throwbacks, reverses, reverse passes - See Texas game or the A&M game last year for examples) fail in Boulder the past 3 years.
