We at AllBuffs have been avidly following the CU football coaching search and have developed some strong opinions. In an attempt to make your job easier, we have broken down some of the issues into four distinct topics to help guide your decision making process. 1. We are strongly opposed to another "I-25 hire", but then again a lot of us like Mac. However, we want a national search. But a list of 22 candidates looks like you don't have any focus. However, we did not like reports that you had tunnel vision for one guy or a handful of guys. So it is important that you conduct a broad national search, but make sure you do it in a very focused way that avoids tunnel vision. 2. Having seen the renewed energy and pride around the program since Cabral took over, we see the importance of the program maintaining a strong link with its traditions with an "in the family" hire. Therefore, we support a Buff for the head coaching position. Except that we don't like that Bieniemy has never even been a coordinator; neither has Embree; Gibbs is kind of a jerk; Dorrell is more of a UCLA guy and didn't do much there to get excited about; Cable has anger management problems and hasn't won anywhere he's been; Fitzgerald can barely be considered a Buff, doesn't have signature wins, doesn't recruit with the big boys, was never a coordinator and is probably loyal to Northwestern; Cabral hasn't ever been a coordinator and wouldn't excite anyone; Miles is only available if he decides he doesn't want to live in a pressure cooker so would we even want him if his attitude has changed that much; and, Mac is 70 years old on a 15+ year hiatus from football and probably can't relate to a 17 year old recruit who was in diapers the last time Mac was on a sideline. 3. With all due respect, after the Hawkins debacle we do not trust you to make this coaching hire yourself, so we were glad you formed a search committee. However, we wanted football people on there. Just not Neinas, since he was responsible for the Hawkins advice. And not anyone who played in the Mac era since they would be biased. Except that those who played for Mac were involved in CU championship football and we like that. Plus, we had much upsetness to see academic types on the search committee since they don't know football. However, we do realize that it's important to get the support and involvement of the CU academic community and recognize that the members chosen do care a lot about CU and CU athletics. Likewise, we were very troubled to see prominent boosters on the committee since we're hiring a football coach, not a CEO. We were also very glad to see prominent boosters on the committee since a football coach is like a CEO and we appreciate the importance of our large boosters getting behind this hire. Bottom line on our thoughts about this committee business, though, is that we don't want it to be some symbolic political thing that rubber stamps your decision but we don't want it to be truly involved in making the decision either. 4. We are all in agreement that maintaining Buff traditions with the new hire is essential (see #2). However, we also see the need for new blood just as Mac was an outsider from a great system when he was hired. But if you don't make an "in the family" hire for head coach, instead choosing a retread (Richt, Bellotti, etc.) or nouveau Hawkins (Hoke, Golden, etc.) or HC virgin (Malzahn, McElwain, etc.)... then we would love/hate that and we would want a staff with a lot of Buffs on it. Or not. It would also be nice to clean house. Except for maybe some of the assistant coaches we like. What is essential is that the next coach can bring a great staff and we all certainly agree this should be an important interview question. We need experienced coordinators. Well, unless they're Buffs, then we are cool with Bieniemy or Embree or Logan as offensive coordinator and we are cool with Cabral as defensive coordinator. Except for those of us who totally oppose the idea. We hope that, having read this letter, you will take appropriate action to ensure that we get the best football coach possible. Thank you for your kind attention, AllBuffs.com :gobuffs: P.S. Oh, yeah. It's very important that the next coach have great hair.
