Am I The Only One Reading Too Much Into Bob Simmons 'Mentoring' ?

EXTRA POINTS: Bob Simmons, a former CU assistant and Oklahoma State head coach, attended Tuesday’s practice. Simmons said he’s going to be working as a mentor for some of the current Buffs. ...

I welcome the help but find it a bit peculiar. The timing is a bit odd.
Did Bohn do this as a gesture to former players? Has he been asked to
'mentor' with the thought he could be around when the **** hits the fan ?
Maybe he would help 'transition' the program once Hawk is axed ?

I don't know. I just find it a bit odd.

SoCal Bob speculated that Bohn might use Simmons as an interim coach in order to stablize the program after Hawkins ass is grass/gone. Then recruiting can continue smoothly and a search committee could take their time and concentrate on finding a good new HC.

It does seem odd to bring Simmons in just for some "mentoring".

I'd be very curious as to whose idea it was to bring him in. If its hawks, then I doubt it means much other then he is trying to gets some W's. If it was Bohn or someone other then Hawk, then I think that it is very interesting indeed.

That makes sense. Simmons has ties to the program, he's been a head coach, and he isn't coaching anywhere else. He's basically the perfect guy to have waiting in the wings. And in the meantime, he can probably do some good with the kids currently on the team. As I recall, one of his strengths was being a positive influence on the kids he coached...

I sort of see this as an extension of PB's staff shake up theory. My concern is not about Simmons, I love the guy. I do fear he is being brought in to calm the pitchfork waiving crowd when DH is retained by saying, "Look here's one of Mac's guys, he along with the other AC's, will help DH get this thing to pop".

Lefty to be totally honest I think Dan Hawkins is a viable head coach if he has two very good and hard nosed Coordinators below him. He does pretty much everything we need except win games, if the OC & DC could be relied on to do that (like petersen in boise) DH is a viable guy. I would have very serious concerns about whether or not Hawkins would actually listen to Simmons and others though.

I doubt very much this was Hawkin's idea to have Simmons come on board...I still hope it means he will be gone at season's end.

then he is the wrong fit for Colorado post TABOR. We can't retain good assistants. If he somehow survives this year and his assitants tear it up next year, then they will be gone and where will we be?

I find it interesting that this news only made the Longmont newspaper.
No Daily Camera and no Denver Post. Simmons arrival wasn't mentioned by Hawk at his weekly news conference and it wasn't brought up on the coaches show last night. Hmmm ??

Strike that up as another scoop for Pat Ridgell. The guy is nails.

And I agree, this all seems very strange to me as well. There are strange things afoot at the circle K.

For Bob Simmons being such a respected assistant under Mac and a former Big 12 head coach you'd think there would have been an announcement that he is back in the program helping CU. Seems like a feel good story for the front page of CUBuffs.com during a not so feel good season.

I find it very strange that it's only been mentioned as a blurb in Ridgell's article.

Simmons would be a perfect IC. He is old enough now that I doubt he has any illusions of being a permanent HC again and would not be seen as a threat to any prospective candidates. He was more than respected by his players both at CU and at Okie State. He would be a good fit toward saving some semblance of a recruiting class and reaching out to the long time fans. I also sense that CU may be getting a bit of a bad reputation among some in the African-American community based on Hawk's personel decisions. Simmons could help dispell a lot of that and maybe help us keep from having some mass transfers out of the program.

I think Mt has picked up on the sentiment he's jsut way of the damn reservation on why, hawk has nothing to do with that perception of CU.

CU has always had to fight a degree of that sentiment. The fact that we have highly talented black players sitting or leaving while clearly less talented white walk-ons are playing is a fact that cannot be ignored by the recruiters of the teams we are competing for kids with.

I am in no way stating or implying that Hawk (or his staff) is in any way racist, however it is very easy for others to look at what is going on and spin it in a way that makes CU look very bad.

I don't disagree, but have to wonder how good of a HC can he be if his OC/DC have to carry him? You make a good point about whther he would listen. Although DH is probably a good guy, he has a collosal ego.

    .
I have no inside info, just spitballin' based on what PB said a few days ago. I'd love to be wrong.

Remember that Bob Simmons was hand picked by Bill McCartney to succeed him at CU when he retired. Marolt hired Neuheisel against McCartney's wishes and Bob left to be HC at Okie State....interesting.

My gut feeling says that is what we are going to see from Bohn. He'll say it was a bad year, I'm going to give Talkins a chance to make some changes on his staff and see where we go next year. :sad2:
