And now to Eugene, OR

"Hertz matched the license plate number provided by police with the name of a woman who had the car rented at the time of the incident.

University of Oregon on-line directories show that woman as a member of the faculty/staff.

NCAA rule 16.12.2.3c states:

An institutional employee or representative of the institution's athletics interests may not provide a student-athlete with extra benefits or services, including, but not limited to: The use of an automobile.

"So, I rented the car for my own purposes on Friday. Cliff Harris and his licensed friend, who showed me his license, asked to borrow it and paid me the full amount in cash that I paid for the rental," said the woman, who agreed to speak to KEZI, on condition of anonymity.

The woman, who describes herself as a friend of Harris over the past few months, said she was unaware Cliff would be driving..."

This is a high profile program that is the focus of both local and national media attention. This situation is not going to go away with a bunch of lame "I didn't know," and " It was an innocent mistake." explanations.

The question is now how safe does Oregon feel about having the media sniffing around them. If they know of or suspect that that there are some things under the surface that they don't want getting out they might take a look at what is happening in Columbus OH and decide that the easiest route would be to throw a couple of players, (and maybe a staff member or two) under the bus to divert attention, take their lumps, and move on.

OSU tried the "We are to big and important to get in trouble" approach and it didn't work very well for them. The Oregon administration may be or should be taking a serious look at what is happening to the east.

OSU swings a much bigger dick than UO does. UO may figure the NCAA is too busy with UNC, USC, and OSU to pay much attention to them, and they may be right about that. In the end, though, this won't end well for them.

Depends on what they have to hide. If, as Mtn ponders, this is just the surface, I doubt the NCAA, or as importantly perhaps the media, is in the mood or the position to be too busy. Might take a while, but this could mean trouble.

Cliff Harris suspended for the LSU game "at the very least" ...

"Cliff's future clearly is in Cliff's hands", said OU head coach Chip Kelly.

Translation: I hope to God this kid doesn't make any headlines between now and September, this whole thing will be forgotten, and I don't have to lose him for more than one game ...

I'm thinking that if the NCAA starts finding a bunch of stuff, and considering recent history in Oregon I would be surprised if they can't come up with something, Oregon may be in big trouble. After delaying action with USC, and being unresponsive to a number of other cases, the NCAA may be looking for somebody to make an example out of. At the same time being forced to act on USC and on OSU, history shows the NCAA as making an example out of a school that is not a traditional power but is well known at the time (see SMU and even Colorado.) Oregon could get pounded in this case if the NCAA wants to divert attention from OSU and some other "big-time" schools.

Oregon might take the approach of trying shuffle this under the rug but if there is something there they are going to be in trouble. The national and west coast media won't let it go like the Nebraska media or the local SEC media would. The USC backers are going to be out for blood trying to get attention off of them, even UCLA supporters wouldn't mind knocking Oregon down a rung to draw attention from their troubles.

Last but certainly not least, as OSU found out, these players aren't rocket scientist. They may be excellent athletes but put them under the spotlight long enough and eventually embarrasing things come out. As soon as the wall of silence gets a small hole in it, the flood tends to break through

Officer: Let's see your license and registration.
Harris: Umm...Here's my student ID
Officer: You don't have a license?
Harris: Not right at this moment.
Officer: Where is your license?
Harris: I'm not going to lie to you. My license is suspended.
Officer: I see. Do you have the registration for this vehicle?
Harris: Um, no.
Officer: No?
Harris: Nope. It's a rental car. It belongs to Hertz.
Officer: You don't look old enough to rent a car.
Harris: I'm 19.
Officer: Who rented this car:
Harris: Mindy Schmidling.
Officer: Do any of you guys go by the name of Mindy Schmidling?
Unidentified Passengers: No, sir.
Officer: Who is Mindy Scmidling?
Harris: She is an employee at the University of Oregon. Payroll Specialist at the office of Business Affairs.
Officer: Wait right here.

Officer runs the data and finds Harris has a suspended license for previous motor vehicle infractions and several unpaid fines in multiple states.

Officer: I'm issuing a citation for going 118 and for driving without a license. Have a nice day.

Doggone it, I just wish they had more institutional control. Like maybe hiring people who aren't dumb as a rock. Don't think she realizes just how stupid she sounds when she says she rented it for herself but then some kid, coincidentally too young to rent a car, came up with the money so she let him have it. I wonder how Hertz feels about that?

pardon me being a doubter, but I wonder if these cops gave the kid a break. 3 kids on scholarship, out doing 118 at 4 a.m. (following a Sat night out) and no drugs or alcohol? ThHey were either drinking/high, or they're too stupid to be in college.

I've heard from a number of cops, that if you are out on the road after midnight on Fri or Sat, they figure it's 50-50 that you're committing some crime.

Ever since Miles Brand died, the NCAA actually seems interested in holding its member schools accountable for their actions. Quite a drastic change from the Brand Era, for sure. This will probably not end well for the Quackers if they try to sweep it under the rug.

I've tried to put together a synopsis of the Lyles' stories from the past few days ... http://www.cuatthegame.com/

It's looking like Oregon will have to: 1) face significant sanctions, or 2) go with the "Yes, we were THAT stupid defense!" :haha2:

Guess which way the Ducks will go?

It really does get more and more bizarre but I suspect the Ducks stick with the really stupid defense and as long as no smoking gun emails show up, this more-or-less blows over.

And when the roosters are crowing and the cows are doing circles in the pasture!

His quote should read 'We come in and find out the truth, and find out if we can sweep it under the rug. Sometimes we can sweep it under the rug. If we can't then we admit it. We never hide anything we cannot sweep under the rug.'

I don't see this whole thing ending well for Chip Kelly. Will he be suspending Thomas too??

Those Ducks are sneaky. They had LaMichael James transfer to a school out of state his last semester of high school so he would qualify. They had Seastrunk's grandmother sign his letter of intent because his mom refused to sign it if he chose Oregon.

Let's just say I was very surprised the Ducks were able to get him qualified. Most schools had him written off as a JUCO placement.

We know. We lived through it with Diante Jackson's recruitment. Buff commit. Then the local Denver Post writer decides to rehash the recruiting scandal in a major column just before national signing day. Weird thing is that he is an Oregon grad, there was no new info in his story, and he wasn't one of the guys who had covered it the first time. Then, strangely, we hear that Jackson's grandma has decided at the 11th hour that Oregon is the place for Diante and he switches his commitment on NSD despite saying that he personally preferred CU.

Amazing that things were able to align so well for the Ducks to have everything work out for them. Lucky Ducks, I guess. I'm sure that playing dirty pool and breaking rules are things they would never do.

We'll see. Duck fans are still in complete denial. But with the recruiting scandal and the mountain of player arrests / off-field incidents, it's clear that Chip is a great X's and O's guy but in way over his head when it comes to managing a program.

With Darron Thomas, that's like the 3rd time he's been the passenger in a car when another player was driving and got in trouble. Remember, he was with MacStoli when he finally pushed Chip over the edge and got kicked off the team. Under things that make you go "hmmm," pot was also involved. My favorite quote from the video...Officer: "Where's the pot?" Harris: "We smoked it all." :canabis:

This could get even worse for Oregon. Rumor has it Schmeling rented the car to make a run to Blue River, Oregon and pick up a bunch of weed. The story goes that Cliffy and friends were returning from Portland, where they had made a run to sell the pot and/or trade it for shoes.

I'm sure the forthcoming details will be breathtaking...:nod:

Wow - that's crazy. In Seastrunk's case, he suddenly realized that God wanted him to go to Oregon. Then, at the national championship game, he was there saying he wished he'd gone to Auburn instead. Guess "God" was wrong.
