So for a long time I have always thought that Duke was hands down the best atmosphere in college basketball. Unfortunately I have to admit Kansas is up there as well.

But after watching the Utah St. - Nevada game, I can now say the Aggies have the best crowd in college basketball. I have heard bits and pieces about Utah State before, but never watched an entire game. The entire crowd is simply amazing if you have never seen them.

They hava one super fan who changes into different ridiculous costumes for every game. Tonight he was the Tea Pot from Beauty and the Beast. Then entire stadium sang the I'm a little tea pot song as an opponent shot free throws. It was soooo loud and almost deafening. Even the referees could not keep a straight face. They do the Winning Team Losing Team chant to perfection.

If the Buffaloes can keep the fans coming back I would love to see the Foam Dome (The Keg for you other people) And I honestly think it could be a place where opponents truly fear to play at.

What are your guys' thoughts on the best atmosphere in college basketball? Big schools and little schools.

I was very impressed with Utah State's fans tonight. Looks like an extremely tough place to play.

I wonder if CU's road games will be tougher or easier in the Pac-12 compared to Big XII? Big XII certainly has tough places in KU, Texas, Mizzou, KSU, Okie State, but there are some duds in Nebraska, Texas Tech, A&M (traditionally), Baylor. Remember "Hilton Magic" at ISU a while back? Meanwhile, the Pac-12 has some notable venues, but the league also has by far the worst attendance figures of the major conferences. Arizona and Stanford are very tough, and it looks like UDub and Wazzu are good atmospheres. Not sure about UCLA, but I know their attendance is much lower than you'd expect. USC is bad, and I don't think Arizona State or Oregon State are great atmospheres. Oregon could be tough in Matt Knight

The truth of course is that winning is what really matters. Teams that are winning have great atmospheres, and teams that aren't do not. Good atmospheres come and go except for a select few places like Rupp and Cameron. This is even true amongst powerhouses having a single "down year" -- UNC's Dean Dome was shockingly empty last year for the Heels, even against big ACC rivals. Kentucky fans, however, will always show up regardless of the 'Cats record

I hope we can continue to improve the atmosphere at the CEC. Last night was a little disappointing, but I wasn't surprised given the cold/4 game losing streak. The Okie State and KU games were great atmospheres. I've seen games in a fair amount of college basketball venues and on those rare occasions when the CEC is packed and rocking, it's on par or louder than many ACC venues I have attended.

I am so envious of their students, reminds me of our student section at FHS on a larger scale we did a lot of fun stuff like this, Monarch had a really cool student section too i had a friend that went there and I would go to some of their games when FHS wasn't playing, they did some real clever stuff including both of these cheers in the video and a cool thing where after a made 3 pointer one or two students in the front would turn around and pretend to do something like shoot a gun or throw a grenade and then all the students would fall down, it was awesome.
I really wish we could implement some of this stuff at CU so much cooler and more clever the F U Kansas or anything else we do.

Stew Morrill has done a fine job at Utah State over the years. he's had several tournament teams and a couple that almost beating Duke, Marquette and whatnot (scaring a top seed). made some near proverbial noise.

It must be nice to get every student at your school to go to basketball games.

What happens if Utah St schedules NCA&T? It needs to happen.

...I guess I"m the only one that thinks the little teapot song is gay??...UState definitely is a cool atmosphere, but I'd rather see CU get some better stuff. CU ain't no bitch school - yes, I can't stand the ignorance and rudeness of our fan base sometimes. At the same time though, I like that our fans will be harsh to the opposition (I'm NOT a fan of the FU chants though). We can come up with some more aggressive cheers than that. I'd roll my eyes if our students started singing little teapot...sort of like watching our quarterbacks playing leapfrog on the sideline...just...eh, for the lack of a better word, it's ***** (sorry to the all of three female followers of these threads).

    dyemeduke,

I completely agree. And most women like men to act like men (not play leapfrog and sing the teapot song). So I highly doubt there's a reason to apologize.

One thing that's really cool right now is the opportunity to build traditions. I really like where this program is heading.

    2006-07: 7-20
    2007-08: 12-20
    2008-09: 9-22
    2009-10: 15-16
2010-11: 15-9 (with at least 8 to play)

We're building a fan base, facilities and the foundation we'll need to be a consistent winner. It's not often you get a 2nd chance, but it really has the feeling like CU basketball has an opportunity to re-invent itself and is taking advantage of it.

Good point, Nik. It has been quite a process over the past few seasons, but it's been fun to watch CU's upward trajectory. It was great at the end of last season to see the hard work and development start to pay off with a nice run at the end of the year. Guys like Dwight Thorne and Cory Higgins deserve so much credit in laying the foundation. It's been a frustrating couple weeks, but it's easy to forget just how far this program has come. Winning a few games in the NIT would be another great step forward, but who knows, maybe the Buffs can finish strong and surprise us even more...CU's improvement over the past few years along with the conference switch, new coach and facility upgrades are all creating an atmosphere for success on a consistent level that CU has never experienced before. I don't agree with those who think CU can never be a serious presence on the college basketball scene, you get the feeling that that myth is about to be proven wrong, and soon.
