So, the MNC is set with Bama and Texas.

The Rose is set with Ohio State and Oregon

Georgia Tech is locked into the Orange

The Sugar Bowl will get the first "replacement" selection from Bama being #1.

They will probably take Florida. No more SEC teams can qualify after that.

The Fiesta then gets the next "replacement" selection.

With no Big XII teams in the top 14 available, who do you think they will take?

    The Available at-large teams are:
    Iowa
    Penn State
    Texas Christian
    Cincinnati
    Boise State
    Virginia Tech
    BYU

The Orange gets the next selection, followed by the Fiesta, and Sugar.

    I think it will be:

    Fiesta: Cincinnati
    Orange: TCU
    Fiesta: Boise State
    Sugar: Iowa

    Matchups:

    MNC: Alabama - Texas
    Rose: Ohio State - Oregon
    Fiesta: Cincinnati - Boise State
    Orange: Georgia Tech - TCU
    Sugar: Florida - Iowa

No way TCU and Boise St both get a nod. None.

there's not much else to take..

    Rose: Bama vs UT
Fiesta: TCU vs Iowa or Penn State
    Sugar: Florida vs Cincy
Orange: Ga Tech vs Boise State

That might be true, but Iowa, Penn St and Virginia Tech travel really well. If I had to guess I think Penn St gets a nod, followed closely by Iowa.

So what is your prediction for the selections?

I think the Fiesta would love to have two undefeated teams since there is no Big XII teams to take.

    TCU-Cincy
    or
    TCU-Boise

would be a very marketable matchup for the Fiesta, but only the Fiesta.

Only one of the Big Ten teams can get in since Ohio State already is in.

Fiesta will take a Big 10 team against either TCU and Boise.. Fiesta is a very tv oriented bowl game and loves to take teams in the midwest/big 10 (chicago/ohio light up tv ratings for bowl games)..

Yeah definitely a possibility too, probably Iowa.

The Fiesta also likes a really good matchup too.

Ah totally forgot. Been a hellish day. The orange bowl is screwed. BYU travels well. No team offers big ratings though.

God Florida vs Iowa would be an awful game, GT vs TCU and Boise vs Cincy would be pretty good games though. If we must watch more than 1 Big Ten team, and I assume we will, I hope it's Penn State. Iowa vs a team like Florida would be hilarious.

I believe Sugar has the first pick and then the Fiesta.. Sugar will take Florida and the Fiesta will probably take the Big Ten team (Penn State/Iowa) and then it will go on from there..

Any scenario that doesn't end with Iowa on the same field as Florida is fine by me.

Will the bowls pick on who travels well or ratings or a mix? The BCS is all about $$$$.

You don't want to have too much competition for Florida. We don't really want to see Timmy crying again, do we?

absolutely.. They want teams that will travel and spend money in their cities..

Its really disappointing the Big 12 couldn't get another team in there because this would have been a great year to get that second team because in all likely hood, the BCS will have two non-BCS teams in the four major bowls (TCU, Boise) just because of the lack of good candidates..

Correct. That's the dumbest rule in the BCS, that only 2 teams from one conference can go. Boise will definitely get a BCS bid, there's just no other teams to choose from.

The at-large teams will be Boise, Florida, TCU, and Iowa. The only one that won't possibly make it in is Iowa, Penn State might get that bid instead. But they both travel very well so I would think they'll give it to Iowa since they beat Penn State and are ranked slightly higher.

    MNC: Alabama - Texas
    Rose: Ohio State - Oregon
    Orange: Georgia Tech - Open

Above are locked. Here are the other locks.

1 Sugar: Open - Open Takes Florida because if they don't the OBowl will.
2 Fiesta: Open - Open Takes Cinncy for the midwest crowd?

I think the Sugar plays the homer card and takes Florida. I think Fiesta takes Cincy to set up a more compelling game against TCU or BSU.

    Orange: Georgia Tech - Open
    Fiesta: Cincy - Open
    Sugar: Florida - Open

Here is the order of picks after that.

The Orange bowl I suspect will take a Big 10 team because they travel well. But they chose first and could take TCU for a compelling matchup. TCU doesn't sound like they travel well.
I think we end up with this....

    1. Orange: Georgia Tech - Penn State/Iowa
    2. Fiesta: Cincy - TCU
    2. Sugar: Florida - BSU

I like those matchups as well. If the Orange takes a B10 team, I think they take Penn State. If Fiesta does it will be Iowa.

    We'll find out tonight.

We'll see what happens, but if I was on a bowl committee I'd worry about whether certain programs would bring enough fans or draw enough of a TV rating. It's about money, not about creating the best or most deserving football matchups.

I love these matchups aik. Don't think it'll happen though (two non-BCS teams) but you never know. Florida-TCU could be billed as a "what might have been" but the Sugar may also have a hard time stomaching taking a non-BCS team for the THIRD year in a row.

I also have to say that I agree a couple posts up about the Orange taking a Big 10 team, and honestly I'd see Iowa over Penn State at this point. Remember the Iowa-USC Orange Bowl a few years back? Iowa brouhgt an INSANE amount of fans with them, plus I'm sure there's quite a few "snow-bunnies" from Iowa in Fla right now.

The Sugar will take Florida. That's a no-brainer.

I then expect the Fiesta to take Penn State. They need at least some kind of national draw, and that's the only place they can get one. Then I see the Orange taking Cincy (they've liked the ACC/Big East matchups) followed by the Fiesta taking Boise and the Sugar taking TCU. Those last two could flip flop, but I think the Sugar would strongly prefer TCU, being much closer to NO, and the Fiesta will go along, not having much preference from their side...

Boise and TCU will both be top 5 in the BCS. The next available team is either Pitt or Va Tech, who may or may not be in the top dozen. There will be two non-BCS teams in the BCS bowls....

Hmmm, didn't think about that. Makes perfect sense. Knowing that, I would see Boise St. in the Fiesta (prior history '07) and TCU to the Sugar.

Most of what I've seen is that the Orange does not want Cincy again for B2B years. They aren't the best traveling team either. I think TCU & Boise would draw more from their fanbase than Cincy will.

Do not underestimate the power of the hotels in the decisions that the bowls make they are a HUGE part of the bowl politics and want those rooms sold.

I still think the Orange will take either TCU or Big Ten team, whatever the Fiesta doesn't take.

The Fiesta is the big wildcard having the first pick and needing at least one big drawing team.

I think TCU and Boise will travel well enough to be considered but I could see Iowa going there.

Hadn't thought about Cincy going there last year. That's too bad, because GT/Cincy might have been an extremely entertaining game...

There really aren't many attractive choices for the Orange in that case, other than Florida, who they will never get. Their best bet is for a Big 11 team to drop to them, but I'd be surprised if that happened too...
