Kanavis McGhee spent last fall out of football, but rest assured that he's still more than marginally connected to the high school football scene in Texas' largest city. He's quite sure coaches in the talent-rich area still remember him.

TBH, I'm a little apprehensive as having someone so green to the college ranks come in. But there's no denying the guy knows how to play. If he can teach some of that wisdom to the guys as well as recruit the Houston area very well, then this has the potential to be an awesome hire. With Tui at DL as well as Cabral at MLB he'll be in good hands.

This choice is a stretch for JE, no doubt. I hope it works out....

Kanavis knows his stuff technically--the footwork, the hands learned well from Bob Simmons...he knows Houston and other parts of Texas for recruiting, and he understands the intensity with which one must play the position. I went against him daily, I can attest to his intensity on the field, I imagine he's been able to direct that into his coaching.

Sounds like more of the same from the past 5 years. More coaches learning on the job.

The difference is its the DE's coach instead of the head coach. We will be ok on this one.

Great chance to teach and see one of our own develop into a top flight coach. He get's the chance to work and learn from Tui and Cabral while providing the link to Houston one of the richest recruiting grounds in Texas. Worth the risk.

truth is at one time or another all coaches had unproven records. Kanavis college career as a coach begins with the Buffs. He played the game at an elite level and thus I have faith that he can pass on that knowledge to players.

Hawk was learning on the job as well as the oc. Mcgee is co-dline coach with Tui which he can lean on.

We need a good pass rush. That's something we've lacked over the 5 past year. We need to put a lot of more sacks on the board by the front 4, not LBs or safeties (although I'll take those as well).

you do realize that JE is a first time head coach while hawk had been a head coach, albeit at lower levels, for over 10 years?

I am aware of that as well as the thread being about McGhee. I am also aware you that you missed my dig at Hawk.

I don't view this as a big of a risk as others seem to. He's being brought in because he can offer access into Texas High Schools for recruiting. He has basically the same coaching pedigree of Dave Logan, who most of us would have accepted as a WR coach or offensive assistant of some kind.

Of bigger concern to me is who will be coaching the QBs and WRs.

I'm not overly worried. He can ask Tui and Cabral if he has any questions. What I'm not sure of is how he will be able to recruit. Just because he is from Houston and coached a little there doesn't seem like the greatest in, but whatever. If he can lure a few guys a year from there that will work.
