Buffs at the U.S.A. Track and Field Championships- Today through Sunday

So, today is the start of the U.S.A. Track and Field Championships, and this year they’re also combined with the U.S.A. Junior Championships. (Both are being held concurrently in Eugene OR.) The meets run through Sunday (so 6/25-6/28).

This is probably the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] biggest meet of the year for the pros, behind only the World Championships being held in China late August. (Looks like there are no junior world championships this year.)

In general, the top 3 finishers of each event at this meet qualify for the world championships. (As I also note in the table below, Buff alum Jenny (Barringer) Simpson, as the defending Diamond League Champion, has already qualified for the World Championships in the 1500 meters assuming she competes at all this weekend. Therefore, she doesn't need a top 3 finish. Her championship also means 4 U.S. runners (including her) will get to go to worlds in this event.)

Good luck to the Buffs (future, current and alums) participating! And, congrats to all for even being accepted to participate in these big meets!

Here is a table listing Buff participants I could find, along with a little info on them and their events. (I just did this list by scanning the entrant lists; sorry if I missed anyone.):

Added direct link in the OP to the usatf webpage from which their stream can be accessed (http://www.usatf.tv/gprofile.php?do=view_event&event_id=49&mgroup_id=45365&year=2015). (Actually, that page also looks like it could also be a good source for live results.)

Looks like USATF is streaming the majority of the 2 meets, with a combination of NBC, NBC Sports and Universal Sports showing the remaining 7 hours.

Men's Junior decathlon has now started. Buff Andrew Ghizzone is 11th after one event, earning 725 points in the 100M. (Leader has 910 points.)

EUGENE, Ore. – Former University of Colorado standout Emma Coburn put on a clinic on Thursday night at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships, easily winning the first round of the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The 2012 Olympian cruised to a time of 9:36.90 in her first steeplechase race of the season. In typical fashion, she moved to the head of the pack at the start of the race and never looked back. The 2015 NCAA Champion, Colleen Quigley, was the runner-up to Coburn, finishing in 9:40.97.

Another CU 2012 Olympian, Shalaya Kipp, also moved on to the finals of the steeplechase, but her route wasn’t as easy in the first heat. Kipp got tangled up in a collision at the water jump midway through the race, but was able to regain ground and came back to take fifth. The top four automatically moved on, so she had to wait to see if her time was good enough at 9:50.91, which it was at ninth overall.

As noted above, Ms. Kipp definitely had an adventure to qualify. She has released an instagram showing a few pictures of her water jump issue when a competitor took a HARD fall over the jump ahead of Ms. Kipp and put her in trouble also for a bit. Great comeback and perserverance by her to still qualify. (Instagram is at https://instagram.com/p/4YOio_HqhU/ .)

Just wanted to mention for anyone interested (and not outside enjoying a beautiful summer day) that the main race in these U.S.A. Championships that would be of interest to Buff fans, the 3,000M women's steeplechase with alums Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp racing, will be starting on NBC in ~17 minutes (scheduled for a 2:55 PM MT start).

Congratulations to Emma Coburn!!!

Emma Coburn gets the win! Impressively, she shaves ~4 seconds off her own meet record, extra impressive because of it being only her 2nd steeplechase race of the year, AND because of pretty high and unusual temperatures (Believe they said around 90+ degrees at race time) in Eugene this year.

Shalaya Kipp finished 6th, also an impressive performance given her missing a lot of last year due to injury. Her time in the afore mentioned heat today, 9:37.09, looks to be very close to her personal best (9:35.7?), so hopefully she'll continue to improve the rest of this season, and will be healthy and in peak form for the all-important 2016 Olympic year as she tries to make her 2nd straight Olympic team.

One of CU's and Crested Butte's best products. The track and field team is fortunate to have her on campus as a volunteer coach.

Congrats to Buff alum Jenny (Barringer) Simpson for winning her 2nd straight 1500M national championship, and 8th overall! As probably THE American distance runner right now (male or female), I'm sure she has high aspirations leading up to and through the World Championships in Beijing in late August.

EUGENE, Ore. – Jenny Simpson won her second consecutive USA Track & Field 1,500 title on Sunday afternoon.

Simpson already had an automatic berth into the 2015 IAAF World Championships as the 2014 Diamond League Champion this August in Beijing, but she wanted to go through the rounds at USAs to defend her title, which she successfully did in 4:14.86.

“I felt like I didn’t have any pressure to make something happen so I was able to just sit and respond,” Simpson said. “I don’t think under any other circumstances I would necessarily trust to leave it to that so this was special where I could sort of roll the dice and see if I can handle it.”

In total, this is the eighth USATF title for Simpson which includes two steeplechase crowns (’07 and ’09) that she won while competing for the Buffs. To make this even more special, it’s the first time she has won back-to-back titles in the same event. Simpson was the 2013 USA 5k Champion and did not race the 1,500 that season at USAs.
