The Bear coach must not know much about the Buffs. Here's a quote in their article (http://uncbears.com/news/2014/11/30/WVB_1130141758.aspx ) announcing their selection- ""This is an exciting draw for us. This is the first time in our times making the NCAA Tournament that we will not face a ranked opponent," said head coach Lyndsey Oates. "I like our match up against CU, they have some good wins this year, but I think our tough scheduling and a tough Big Sky has us prepared for the tournament."" (Although I assume she may have meant tournament seeded team?)

Anyway- Buff's better bring their A game Friday afternoon. Go Buffs! (And, if the Buffs do manage a win, hope it's a quick one- especially important given the back to back day matches the tournament requires.)

By the way, for those who want to "bet" on the Buffs making it through the 1st 2 rounds and so earn a 2nd weekend of matches (and/ or are just big volleyball fans) and might be near or in the relevant cities, the NCAA is offering some "Cyber Monday" deals, some of which are buy one, get one free ticket offers to the regional volleyball matches which will be held December 12th and 13th at 4 locations- Ames, Iowa, Louisville, Ky., Minneapolis MN and Seattle WA. If the Buffs win both their matches this weekend, they'll be going to Minneapolis. (Note- it looks like the Minneapolis offer ends today.)

If anyone is interested, the deals can be accessed here- http://www.ncaa.com/cybermonday .

The UNC coach was referring to the Buffs not being ranked IN THE TOURNEY. There is a clip of their "watch party" that is mostly her talking to the team and, near the beginning, she said what you quoted. But later on she said that the Buffs WERE ranked in the AVCA poll. So she knew what she was talking about. She also mentioned about Taylor Simpson and how good she is as well as mentioning the Simpson sisters.

Looking at the teams UNC has played, they lost to every ranked team as well as to most of the California teams. I like our chances against UNC.

I am so hoping we can beat UNC and CSU so I can make the easy drive to Minneapolis--at least it's easy if it isn't snowing like it was when I went there last year.

Anyone know why CSU and CU did not play in the non-conference schedule?

I can't come up with a humorous retort, but my guess is that one or the other of the programs is avoiding. They haven't played each other in a number of seasons. Obviously CSU has had tremendous success in women's volleyball for a while now. Their coach (Tom Hilbert) is in his 18th season and has made the NCAA tourney each one. IIRC, before Kritza was hired Mike Bohn made a run at Hilbert. Perhaps that has played into the equation.

I'd love to see CU and CSU play each other in the non-conference schedule every season.

As for Friday, UNC may be tougher than we all would expect for two reasons: 1) They'll have a point to prove, especially the in-state kids who didn't get a serious look from CU and 2) CU might just have a hard time not looking forward a bit to Saturday.

Obviously, CU's schedule has been a zillion times more difficult than any of the other three schools playing in Ft. Collins. Hopefully this will have prepared them well.

UNC lost to CSU in Greeley early in the season 3-0.

    A few things:

    1) For those interested, there are a few links to videos in the article related to the Buff's being ranked #19 (http://www.cubuffs.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209789408) regarding the tournament. There is an ~9 minute press conference with Coach Kritza, and short (<2 minutes) interviews from the tournament selection watch party with assistant coaches Wenger and Jagd.

    2) Assume there will be a cubuffs article out SOON, but just wanted to mention the Pac 12 just announced All conference honors (http://pac-12.com/article/2014/12/02/pac-12-announces-volleyball-all-conference-honors ), and 4 Buffs were honored. For the 1st time since joining the Pac, CU had someone named 1st team all conference, and it's TWO people- Taylor Simpson and Alexis Austin! And, in addition, both Anna Pfefferle and Gabby Simpson were named honorable mention to the All Freshman team. Congrats to all!!!

    3) Hope some Buff fans (and maybe even some sort of band?) are going to be able to make it to Fort Collins/ Moby this weekend. Looks like it's going to be a big crowd (although I assume there MAY not be a lot of people (CSU fans not bothering to be there) at the Friday afternoon match?). I just bought reserved seats at the CSU ticket site, and the "best" seats available are at the end line. (Although that might be cool in one way- I can try to bother Northern Colorado's servers.)

Congrats to Taylor and Alexis for making 1st Team All conference and to Anna and Gabby on being named honorable mention on the All Freshman team!

There is no excuse if the band and cheerleaders do not go to Fort Collins. I was so embarrassed last year in Minneapolis because the other 3 schools all had bands and cheerleaders and CU had a recording of the fight song. That was it.

What I saw in Minneapolis last year was that there were not many fans from the teams in the second match there for the first match until near the end of the match. That match against Iowa State did go 5 sets so who knows if fewer fans would have been in the building if it hadn't gone on so long. Some of the diehard Minnesota fans were there from the beginning.

One think I will remember from that match is after I got to my seat, I realized I was sitting beside two teenagers. Turned out it was Anna Pfefferle and a friend. She was there to cheer on her future team.

I got my two tickets. I chose GA because I didn't want to sit on the end of the court. Never been to Moby. Hope the GA seats aren't that bad. It appeared that the GA seats went all the way around the arena.

Moby has some excellent seats and some totally horrible seats. You also have to pay to park.

Just wanted to mention there's another volleyball article available, this time discussing Nicole Edelman and Neira Ortiz Ruiz. It's at http://www.cubuffs.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209792517 .

Here's the start of it for sampling purposes:

Edelman, Ortiz Ruiz Succeed With Help From Dads

    Release: December 03, 2014
    By: Andrew Haubner, CUBuffs.com

BOULDER – Junior setter Nicole Edelman and senior outside hitter Neira Ortiz Ruiz weren’t always Division I volleyball players. Edelman didn’t start playing until she was 11, while Ortiz Ruiz started playing seriously when she was 14. They plied their trade in club volleyball, and at 14, Ortiz Ruiz earned her first national team call-up in her home of Brazil. While their coaches helped them progress into technically superior players, both players got a mental boost from their fathers, who were more than just supportive dads: they were former professional athletes.

Jose “Piculin” Ortiz played professional basketball for 26 years, while Nestor Edelman played in Europe and his native Argentina throughout the 1970’s. Now as fathers, they watch their daughters achieve and succeed as members of the University of Colorado volleyball team. Most importantly, neither Nicole nor Neira is a clone of their fathers, creating their own path which has led them to become two of the best players on the No. 19 ranked volleyball team in the NCAA.
