Tyler Hansen took over at quarterback midway through the 2009 season, and started the final seven games of last year. But when the Buffs opened spring football, coach Dan Hawkins re-opened the competition between Hansen and Cody Hawkins, who opened the last three seasons as starter.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera, Hansen has been told by coaches he will start Colorado's season opener against Colorado State at Invesco Field in Denver.

In his seven games as starter, Hansen threw for 1,423 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, completing just under 56 percent (126-of-226 of his passes.

The Buffaloes went 2-5 in those games after starting the season 1-4, finishing 2009 with a 3-9 record.

Hansen had been the presumptive starter and had been taking most of the snaps with the first-team, and working as though he was the starter in voluntary summer workouts.

Coaches insisted the race was close, but Hansen took a slight lead in a chart that tracked every throw the quarterbacks made in every drill and scrimmage from the spring through preseason camp.
