BOULDER – The University of Colorado lacrosse team faces its first road test of the season when it travels to Evanston, Ill. to take on No. 7 Northwestern at 11 a.m. MT on Saturday, March 7.

The Buffs (2-1) have won two straight games after earning their first shutout in program history to begin the week, a 19-0 victory over Presbyterian. Saturday’s contest will mark the first meeting between the Buffs and Wildcats, and a return to a familiar place for head coach Ann Eillott and her coaching staff, Colleen Magarity and Hannah Nielsen all of whom played at NU. Elliott also spent three seasons as an assistant coach for the Wildcats before being named the Buffs’ first head lacrosse coach when CU added the program in the spring of 2012.

Northwestern takes the field on Saturday with a 3-2 record. In their last game, almost a week ago, the Wildcats fell in a close 12-11 match against No. 2 North Carolina on the road. Freshman attacker Selena Lasota leads NU on offense with 19 goals and two assists this season.

Good luck to the lacrosse team in a couple hours. I'm sure it will be a big game for the Northwestern-"bred" Buff coaches, and for all the players playing THE recent power in the sport. (From 2005-2012, NW won all but one NCAA championship.) GO BUFFS!

(And, let me take a moment to thank the Pac 12 folk for NOT requiring a separate paid subscription to access streaming events like the Big 10 evidently does. Bummer those interested can't watch this match without the extra subscription.)

Huge opportunity for the Buffs today.

This is a measuring stick game for a young program and a young team traveling to play an elite.

Northwestern (from now on to be abbrev. NU) with 1st goal ~3 minutes into the game.

Buffs now up 2-1 after goals by Fusco and Sisk. They seem to be more than holding their own- up 8-5 over NU in shots on goal.

(Per earlier tweet, 4th Buff goal was unassisted by Kiernan.)

NU up 7-6 with 21 minutes still left. Buff's went up 6-5 on Sisk goal, then NU has scored 2 in a row, the 2nd when the Buffs were shorthanded after a yellow card to Fusco.

This one now needs to have a momentum change. Two more NU goals- they're now up 9-6 with ~16 minutes to go.

10-6 with about 13 minutes left. NU showing why it wins championships.

14-8 final.

Good effort and great learning experience.

Important thing is to rebound with a win. Buffs have 10 days off before hosting a pretty good New Hampshire squad.

14-8 is the final score.

No disgrace losing to a great team like Northwestern. Like many/ most young clubs/ programs, Buffs don't currently seem to have the "2nd gear" against the better teams (NU, DU) for the 2nd half; pretty impressive they can play with and lead against those teams for a half. They DID improve a lot last year as the season progressed, and hopefully will again this year. (Good sign for the future- 5 of the 8 goals today I believe scored by freshmen, indicating even more upside possible as the year goes on when both the frosh and sophomore Buffs hopefully get going at the same time as they gain experience.)

And, not that it probably means much to her in a loss, but congrats to Johnna Fusco for I believe another hat trick.

Very good result against one of the best teams in the country and a perennial powerhouse.
