I don't have a dog in this fight. But it would seem to make a lot of sense for BYU to go independent in football.

BYU is probably one of a small handful of schools that could actually pull it off. Their biggest problem, which is the same problem that UT will ultimately face, is scheduling. Will Utah even continue to play them, when they're playing a 9 game conference schedule every year? Probably, but then who? Fresno? NMSU? Weber State? Honestly, their scheduling options become pretty limited.

that's the thing, who do you play after October 5 and November? when everyone else is in conference?

TCU in the MWC has always been temporary. c'mon, really? i don't think TCU brings much to the leftover Big XII....but, vs Wyoming, ???

    Fort Worth.

I would suspect that Air Force would be 1 step behind BYU in the rush to Independence. The coaches/admin have always been fairly open about the benefits of being independent. If Utah and BYU were out of the conference then AFA wouldn't have too much to keep them in the fold.

AFA would have games with Army and Navy. BYU most likely, and possibly more access to Notre Dame as well. Playing CSU, Wyoming, and New Mexico in some type of rotation would be fairly easy but then they would have access to play more "national" games in neutral sites. The Armed Forces Network could be the platform for them (and Army/Navy) to get broader exposure and revenue (not that Federally supported institutions necessarily need the money, but Navy's AD is a separate institution)

With all that said the article seems very BYU-skewed to me.

WOW, they sure DO sound like they think they ARE Notre Dame-lite.

Umm, that might be because there are NO eligible/realistic options for the WAC at this time. Until the NCAA-mandated moratorium expires for schools to petition for Division I-FBS status.

I'm sure if it was actually worthwhile, then Montana would make the jump to fill Boise State's place in the WAC, but that remains to be seen (and we will find out in the next couple of years I think).

I would laugh my ***** off if Utah told them to piss off and stopped scheduling them.

Would, of course, be second to us doing the same to the lambs.

CSU's twitter feed is reporting that BYU is leaving the conference and that the press conference is scheduled for Thursday.

Too bad for the MWC. I was thinking that Boise State mitigated Utah's departure and kept them in line for an auto bid, especially if they could have recruited another team or two (Houston? Fresno State?).

If BYU and AFA leave, the bottom will fall out and they'll likely re-merge with the WAC, or join C-USA.

In a way. More important for Boise was to step up in competition as part of a long-term plan to be invited when the Pac-12 becomes the Pac-16.

I would guess they'll start by trying to lock in Utah and USU for games every year. An annual series with Notre Lame might make sense for both sides if ND starts getting squeezed on scheduling by conference expansion. If AFA goes independent, a series there would make sense. Maybe even some games with Army and Navy too. They'll probably try to schedule a couple games each against 12 Pac and WAC teams too. Hawaii might even be another annual series for them, considering the LDS population in the islands and their recruiting in the Pacific. Plus, I'd be willing to be they'll mix in a couple lower division teams (Weber State, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona?) and maybe even a couple MWC schools, if those schools will have anything to do with them.

I'm pretty shocked by this one, though. The MWC is in a ****load of trouble right now...

There's no way Boise gets into the Pac whatever. I just can't see that happening. They are a nice little niche program. Doubt they'll really get a pass to the larger level programs.

I could see an annual schedule for BYU focusing around Notre Dame, Utah, Air Force, Hawaii, and a few others like Washington and Oregon. I wouldn't be opposed to CU getting in on that.

Not as long as we've got CSU on the schedule every year. If the 12 Pac does end up with 9 conference games, that would only leave us 1 open OOC slot every year. BYU might be ok for a home and home each decade or something, but I'd hate to see us get tied into anything more...

This will open up some room for KSU, TT, OSU and Mizzou when the Mack 10 crumbles in two years.

kind of sucks in a way, since i really respected the move the MWC schools made to leave the monstrous "new" 16 team WAC to form the MWC and get out of the stupidity of the 16 team crap**** future....to preserve the old mountain states feel/rivalries....and poach TCU.

well, anyway, welcome to the future...right? but, to be fair, can't talk "free markets" out one hand and expect otherwise.....no matter how much "tradition" and the "old timey" **** is gone in favor of pure marketing.

war Big 8 and the new futurism where sport and competition are just more spectacle like the Jersey Shore. sport as sublimated "competition" always mirrors the economy.....

I could see the BCS making some kind of compromise - a BYU finish in the top 5 instead of top 8 lands them a BCS bid. Just hard enough to keep them out of a BCS bowl almost every year but not impossible to do if all the stars align - It would be in their best interest to allow BYU to do this so they can get Orin Hatch off their ass. With both BYU and Utah having the ability to go to a BCS bowl this takes away pressure from the people applying it that are seeking a playoff in college football and the BCS can continue to make money and prohibit us from seeing the best match ups and an uncontested true national champion.

we should probably go over o the BYU board posing as CSU fans and accuse them of running scared, seems like the sort of thing they'd do.

It sounds like the only way BYU makes this move is if they can get a guaranteed slot from the BCS whenever they finish high enough in the polls.

This is crazy and out-of-the-blue. I mean, I knew they weren't happy about Utah getting a nod to the Pac-12 (because they realize that will raise Utah's profile long-term), but never did I think they'd even think about something so sudden and fast. Seems like an extreme move, but I think they feel the MWC will unravel without Utah and I'm sure they see TCU in the Big 12-2 or whatever soon, so maybe they're panicking.

In any event, if this happens I'll be sad because the MWC was what was right about college football -- those teams all had a solid bond and looked out for each others in the days they escaped the WAC-16. Doesn't look like that togetherness is there now.

screw BYU. bad for the MWC, but really? the BYU network? they are concerned about their BCS chances enough to make entire conference decisions about it? it's just bluster and noise to pretend they are as relevant as Utah (woooo!) in Pac movement.

Bruce Feldman reporting that he has a source saying that the CSU twitter feed was hacked. Rammies can't even log into their own twitter account right now.

    Story still seems real, though.

I think there's a lot to that. BYU cannot stand the fact that Utah is in the P10 and they are not.

If CSU fans weren't such blowhards, I might actually feel bad for them. But they are, so I don't.
