He's in town for his charity golf tournament. He came across as pretty satisfied with the way things have worked out for him, not bitter at all. I guess he has $3 Million reasons to be happy. Anyway, he mentioned that they were auctioning off a CU helmet that was signed by every living coach, including Sonny Grandelius, who died just a few weeks after signing the helmet. Think about it... yes - even Chuck Fairbanks signed the helmet. Now my question is this; does the fact that that good for nothing douchebag asshat of a human being penned his name to this helmet actually detract from it's value?

Sacky, I usually like your posts, but this is ****ed up in my opinion. Just like we shouldn't be so critical of the players, we should give the coaches some props. They work their asses off. So, GB did not recruit well towards the end, and he had a scandal. He wasn't the most imaginative of a person coaching wise either. He still bled black and gold for a long time, and he probably does still love CU, albeit not as much as he used to. I blame GB for some things, but I thank him for many things he did for CU. Yes, a coaching change was needed, but we shouldn't just bash GB in this manner.

...hopefully this post doesn't open pandora's box of replies...

I think Sacky was referring to Fairbanks. Not that it changes your point...

Sacky was definitely referring to Fairbanks, not Barnett. If I remember correctly (which admittedly I often don't) the sackman is actually a pretty active defender of good 'ol Barney.

Somewhat on the subject, I saw [ame="http://www.amazon.com/High-Hopes-Taking-Purple-Pasadena/dp/0446520993/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213326783&sr=8-1"]this book[/ame] at a thrift store today. Didn't buy it though, considering everything that's happened in the past decade I'd imagine reading the book would be an uncomfortably bizarre experience.

    ugh....

i like GB. i think in many ways he was rail roaded and his hands were tied. in other ways, he made his own bed and had to lay in it. over all, i think he got the shaft and the end result was he had his hands tied behind his back to the point he could not be successful at CU and for a lot of reasons.

i think the guy loves CU. he wants nothing but the best for the program. on some levels, i do feel sorry for the man. on others, i dont.

that being said, i wish him all the best on what is to come for him and i absolutly think that getting a new coach was 100% the right thing to do. the program needed new blood. i for one am more than happy with hawk and co.

Every offseason there's a anti GB thread that pops up. This offseason is no different. Even if the thread wasn't intended to become one.

    :wtf:

duke's point is that we should not bash the coaches because of their work ethic, dedication, and contributions to the success of the university and the athletic program...

mr. fairbanks was a phone-it-in coach who did more to **** up the reputation of the university and the athletic program than any other coach in our storied history...

...we must never forget those dark days...

and those ****ing powder blue uniforms...

    damn...i am having flashbacks...

don't forget fairbanks spending $50,000 to renovate his own office when we were dropping eight sports and starting the athletic fee for students. That guy was an absolute disaster.

I think this is truly a one-of-a-kind item, and certainly one of the reasons I love CU.

Do you think that OU would let John Blake, Howard Schnellenberger, and Gary Gibbs sign a helmet to be auctioned off? HELL NO.

Most OU fans think the OU coaching position skipped from Barry straight to Bob.

So I did a search for a celebrity couple from Oklahoma in the hopes that I could come up with some witty zinger (never seems to work out for me) but ended up led to this site, which is far better than anything I could have hoped for:

:smile2: ...my apologies Sacky...I should have read your post more closely. Since I wasn't really around for the Fairbanks days and I know more of Barnett, I guess I just assumed you were talking about GB. I guess the old saying about assuming things applies here...although I'm not sure how you're an ass by my assumption, but whatever.

Great Pic Sackman! But I have a question. Do you (or anyone else) know why the OU band members held up their index fingers at the end of our game with them last year???
I know it wasn't signaling that they were number one? Every time I watch that game (which has been many:smile2:) I wonder about that. I just chalked it up to some sort of tradition.

I was definitely referring to Fairbanks, not GB. I think GB was dedicated to coaching at CU and got a raw deal from the likes of Mary KKKeenan. I'm glad we have Hawkins now, as it was time to move on and I think he's a tremendous asset to the school, but I don't hold any grudges against GB.

Fairbanks, on the other hand, was a true low-life scum. He was the Hillary Clinton of college coaches. Lying, cheating, scheming, "everything is about me" douchebag of the highest order. The CU athletic department STILL hasn't recovered from the scorched earth path of destruction that jackass left behind. I, for one, will never forgive the man for what he did to my beloved university.

ralph, i will  for the site.

as for going out of your way to put down a couple "from oklahoma" at least this couple (who are not "from oklahoma" as one half of the partnership neither was born, raised in, or ever lived in oklahoma) does not have to live with either set of parents. how is that for a zinger, since you want to throw them?

    it IS zinger day?

I don't hate on GB, but he was trending the wrong way at the end of his tenure. (2001 was still a fantastic season in my book).

I wasn't around for the Fairbanks era.

That is some kind of goofy OU tradition.
