It was a great presentation. Hawk told a bunch of cool stories and talked about his philosophy on coaching. Nothing that any of us haven't heard already. He was asked about PT Gates and he said that he expects Gates to be here in the Fall, but acknowledged that he has a big class load to deal with this summer.

Sorry none of you could come, it was a great way to visit with coach Hawkins one-on-one. Lots of folks got some face time with him after the presentation, including me. I asked if he could guarantee a victory against ASU this year. He said he'll guarantee that they come out with guns a blazing.

If you've never heard Hawkins talk, do yourself a favor and go to a kickoff luncheon or a Buff Club luncheon this year. He's a very animated and passionate guy.

it was that same strategy that set the stage for black friday. i like hitting the ground running and staying the course for the whole game.

Funny - he told a story about how he was coaching at Boise and it was at the end of the game. They were up by 14 points and on the 5 yard line. They line up for a field goal, hit it, and the game is over. But wait, there's a defensive penalty. Now at this point, the game is over. But his QB says "Coach, I have a play that I want to run". So he lets the kid run the play and they score, which pisses off the other team no end. But Hawk justified it by saying that if he wants his kids to have the killer attitude, he has to allow them to be killers - or words to that effect.

In essence, what Hawk is doing here is reshaping the teams philosophy about how to play the game. If they play all out without fear of failure, then they'll win a lot of games. That attitude was evident with the Boise State squad in the Fiesta Bowl last year, and I have every expectation that it will be evident with the Buffs at some point. I just don't know when.

Also, about the Boise State/OU game. He said he gets a lot of comments on that and he says it's like hearing "Hey, I'm dating your ex wife and she's awesome!!!".

exactly.... that is why I am still issed at Stoops for calling off the offense midway through the 3rd quarter of the 2003 game against A&M. Just because a team is up by X number of points, dont quit playing.....

i get tired of the Boise thing, that was hardly a great OU team that Boise beat.

probably the weakest big XII champ ever. too much is made of that game.

Maybe, but it's still one of the best college FB games I've ever seen.

Top 5 in my book. Boise state made that game fun. OU looked stogy, slugish, and confused.

He is a great man to talk to. I met him at the spring game and had my little girl get her picture taken with him. Hawk held her and gave her his button he was wearing. I'm gonna frame the pic.

without taking anything away from boise, they played a tremendous game:

If OU would have just played OU football and smashed the rock right at them for 4 quarters, it probably wouldn't even have been a game. Instead, Stoops just kept trying to throw the homerun ball all game and it proved to be costly. Look at OU's possession in OT. They give the rock to AP and he runs that little slant run between the tackle and guard, and takes it to the house.

I just don't think Boise was physical enough to stay with OU, if OU had pounded it right into them for 4 qtrs. OU's offensive gameplan played right into what Boise wanted.

that was a phenomenal game though. The second best of this century, only #2 to the UT/SC nat'l title game.

in my opinion OU had sold out to the blitz all year....and BSU saw that, finally. i kept waiting for someone to pick up on it.....and i thought the bugeaters might but Cally was too busy trying to outsmart himself and Taylor threw some bad deep balls in the championship game for ints.

they weren't going to line up and knock heads with OU, after Peterson got hurt....that's what they wanted you to do. shorten the game, get a big play from the big WR (Kelley?) and convert 3rd and 3. Thompson will beat you deep once maybe when you stack the line.

BSU still scored 43 on that OU defence (6times more that NU) and held AP under 4 yeards a carry for the course of the game and that includes the 25 yarder in OT. Baring that run he had 52 yards on 19 carries.

hmmm... going into to that game not many people were giving BSU a chance. I think they played a good game and beat a good OU team. its not like they played some crappy team. That OU D was solid.

They didn't accidentaly back into the win either. They never got put away. The played it for all the marbles the whole time. Either it was one of Stoops worst coaching jobs or OU the team penciled in a win or they had some tremendous weakness or they just werent that good of an OU team.

I get goose bumps thinking about what the Buffs are gonna look like in a few years with this guy as our HC
