Jeff Bower at So. Miss. resigns...look for Fedora from OK St.

Chan Gailey at GT out....Nutt leaves Arky?, Jimbo Fisher?

Ted Roof at Duke out....Al Borges gets his chance?

SMU, Baylor the coach killing academy, NU, Michigan, Ole Miss all open with more to come...it's going to get interesting.

aTm and Sherman, I still don't get that one. Maybe he's the only guy on their list who expressed interest. I can't imagine he was number one or six actually.

Why would Cowher want that job though? He can get the Panthers job at the end of the season for a LOT of money.

cowher always kinda struck me as a guy that could work in college. a college coach has less stress than a nfl coach, doesnt have to work the hours, still gets rewarded handsomely and he could stay in raleigh. i am not sure if cowher actually wants to return to the nfl.

money shouldnt be the problem if duke wants to be a winner in football.

I agree with that, but I do think there's a decent shot he is coaching the Panthers next season.

Duke doesn't seem like a school that is particularly interested in being a power in football.

Maybe the year Kansas has had has raised thier belief level in what can be done. All schools want to be a power in all sports if they can. Duke might decide to give it a shot and see what happens.

that´s if cowher wants to return to the pros ... and im not convinced he wants to do that right now. a part of me would also love to see cowher in college, so maybe its just "wishful" thinking on my part.

maybe butch davis going to unc has changed the opinion on football in durham and maybe they´ll get tired of being the acc´s whipping boys.

Perhaps, but it would take a lot of convincing to get a big name coach in there. Mor likely, it's going to have be an up and comer most likely to turn that around. I would imagine the Appalachian State coach would get a look.

Also, Ole Miss would be stupid not to hire Bower.

I want them to get Slick Rick. Don't even think about them getting Bower.

My Southern Miss kids are livid about Bower being fired (or resigning, it is unclear here which it is)

Definitely a weird story. I can't believe he would be fired, but stranger things have happened.

I am interested in the ripple effect of all these openings. For instance, if Mizzou wins the B12, doesn't Pinkel become a new hot coach? He certainly runs the popular offense everyone wants lately.

What about Mangino, isn't there a fat chance somebody will go after that guy?

Let's see, if Mizzou wins the MNC Pinkel would leave? Why? Is the Big XII a stepping stone conference like the Sunbelt?

I am starting to get a little nervous about Hawkins with some other jobs opening up. There is no question that he did a very good job this season with the turnaround. I wonder if some of these schools might try and lure him away? Nutt is now out too at Arkansas.

Arkansas all of a sudden scares me. The Waltons have the green...lol LSU scares me if Miles takes off for UM.

Mizzou isn't a lower tier school, but certainly there are better opportunities than Mizzou out there. Pinkel currently makes $1.2 mil, which is a lot less than the "have" schools are able to pay. He was at one time mentioned for the UW job.

Neuheisel went to Washington and that KU coach (name escapes me) went to Minnesota, Leach was named as a candidate for the Miami job when it opened as well as others, so it seems like a real possibility to me.

I think he will be here at least as long as Cody is on the team.

I think Hawkins is in Boulder for more than just the football aspect of things. We get him - hell, the students at Naropa probably understand half the things he says more often than the typical CU fans do. He's an outdoorsy, folksy kind of guy - I just don't see him fitting in well in Southern football culture or the Southern way of living.

I agree with that - but also will add that I just really don't see Hawk going anywhere anytime soon. CU is a good gig. We play in one of the best, if not the best, conferences in the country, we play a top 5 schedule every year, our television exposure is HUGE, and Boulder is a decent place to have to live & work. :wink2:

Um, see the NU coaching carousel... Those guys spend more time on the road than NFL coaches do because of all the recruiting trips.

I think Bill hung it up for good. I know there were family issues behind his departure from the Steelers. His wife and family moved to Durham during the season and left him in PTown. We shall see.

NFL coaches probably work less than college coaches.

point taken, i didn´t consider that and thought about "office" hours and time spent on the practice field. however, don´t you think that a college coach might have more free time in the offseason than a pro coach does? the nfl coach has to prepare for the draft, free agency etc. ... what do college coaches do when the season is over? serious question, btw, not trying to take the piss ...

i think he will be back one day, but cowher has the luxury that he can wait for the right fit and doesn´t have to rush things. i was actually a bit surprised to see he´s only 50. i thought he was a little older.

one reason for his departure was that he wanted to spend more time with his family and kids. 2 kids are out of the house and one was still living at home, but i don´t know if she had 1 or 2 years left in HS. when she leaves the house to go to college, i can see him getting bored a bit and taking another job ... but it wouldn´t surprise me at all if he didn´t coach for another few years.

I think NFL coaches work more during the season. They don't have a restriction on practice hours but the NCAA does. The season is obviously longer. The game planning is much more critical so I'm sure the office hours are brutal. Once the season ends they probably have a lot of off time until March. The college guys go right from the bowl game to firming up the recruits and then into spring ball.

As for the NFL draft they have a much larger support staff as well as a General Manager, a talent evaluator, and a bunch of scouts. The college guys have to do all that leg work plus put together a football camp in the summertime.

Don't think we have anything to worry about until Little Hawk is a senior..

Hawk hasn't extinguished himself enough at CU to warrant a better BCS job or offer at this time..

Spinning...it's frickin' going off the rails.

I count 11 D1 jobs open with several more likely to open up, I've never seen anything like it. Here's the latest I've seen:

    UM

    NU

    Baylor, the coach killer

    SMU

    Ole Miss

    Wash. St.

aTm- Sherman already on board, Aggie having shot his wad like a pimply faced kid at junior prom

    GT

    Duke

    CSU

    S. Miss.

    Likely to be open soon:

    Arky

    UCLA

    Syracuse

    Possibles, but not certain:

    UW

and who knows how many new openings because of the domino effect. Man, this is crazy and it's not even December.

What assistants are out there that may get a look at one of the bigger jobs?

    Sarkisian
    Charlie Strong
    Others?

I am curious who would be an attractive candidate from the non-HC ranks.
