Amazing a coach can last that long at a BCS program with such little success in today's climate. Some programs only give three years for a Tourney experience. There's probably blame to go around including administration but wow in tolerating mediocrity.
In terms of Chris Collins, no idea if they'll be able to get him. I don't see him staying at Duke (assuming he gets an offer) if he doesn't replace Coach K in the next few years or so. I don't get why he'd stay as an assistant.
Northwestern is a unique situation given that they've never made the Dance. The fact he made Northwestern simply *competitive* was worthy of praise and thus he was tolerated. Now, the fact they kept him in 2008 after he went 1-17 in the B1G, with a 2-14 mark the year before was pretty remarkable. Yet, the perseverance paid off (in Northwestern terms), as they made the NIT the next four years and were on the verge of making the Dance a couple of those years.
Not sure I'd touch Chris Collins given how most Krzyzewski guys have turned out as coaches. However, he is from the Chicago area so I get the allure, along with the whole good academic private school similarity....there's just that small little thing of Duke's 15 Final Fours compared to Northwestern never making the Dance. Might be worth waiting around, but never underestimate Coach K's hard-on for Wojo. He just might try and stick around long enough to prep Wojo to take the reigns. Nothing would surprise me with that weird cult. Some WEIRD **** goes on behind the scenes at Duke.
I'm aware of their lack of basketball success including no NCAA appearances, still don't understand how they can just be content with this for so long.
If Coach K wants Wojo, even more of the reason for Chris Collins to leave. In terms of the lack of success from the Coach K coaching tree, yeah it's bit underachieving, but I wouldn't eliminate those coaches necessarily. Tommy Amaker and Mike Brey have been successful. Quin Snyder and Jeff Capel have experienced success even if it wasn't sustained.
C-Ville, Jeff Jones just went Conference USA. Hired to lead Old Dominion into their new conference.
Wojo's the only guy who can consistently and correctly pronounce Coach' K's last name!
Poles are thicker than thieves; I'm close to a Polish family and I see it first hand: Collins most likely has NO shot at Duke.
The Chicago angle makes good sense for both Collins and NW.
Not a bad hire, IMO. He did a very solid job at American. He's progressed in a huge way as a coach since his decline at UVA. ODU isn't a bad job, especially now with their move. They are pumping a lot of funds into their athletics programs (joining C-USA, ODU football becoming just the 3rd D1 football school in VA). Talent-rich area, too.
This is a pretty interesting article/case study on the Northwestern job. It was written before they hired Chris Collins.
First things first, let’s dismiss what seems to be the popular choice of Duke assistant Chris Collins. Since 2003 only four first time head coaches were hired into a power conference. As you can see in Table 1 below, none of the coaches were able to improve the team three years after they took over. In fact, on average they made the program worse by 18%.
Table 1: Conference Win % from first time head coaches in a power conference
Sidney Lowe was an NBA HC, hard for me to characterize him as a first-time HC.
funny, the received wisdom was that the Duke job was Johnny Dawkins when K stepped down or was finally embalmed in the pyramids. not a huge fan of Stanford but i did really like JD as a player.
i don't know if i'd call Amaker a success....he did get fired from Michigan and there were some questions about his recruiting at Seton Hall...i seem to remember. Snyder was a cokehead who may or may not have done the deed with Linus Kleiza's gf....and jeff capel put ou on probation.
edit: who doesn't put ou on probation?
Some weird ass **** goes on with K and Wojo.
Laid it out above! Both Polish...........you're not a Pole, you don't get it, never will!
I agree with your take on Dawkins and Duke. I thought it was his job to lose and he's apparently doing that with his lack of success at Stanford.
Amaker got a bit of a raw deal IMO. He looks even worse now because of the current success.
