Plenty to like about Washington State this season, from the quarterback and the quality of play (and depth) on the lines to receiver Gabe Marks, a respectable defense and a favorable schedule. (The Cougars miss Utah and USC.)

I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if WSU won the North, which says much about the Cougars and their competition.

Leicester City won the Premiership, after all.

But when it came time to pick winners and losers, I struggled to envision WSU having the depth needed to win the division and having the frame of mind necessary to handle the success that comes with competing for a title.

Everything changes with expectations, especially when expectations arise for the first time.

    Coach: Mike Leach
    Season: Fifth
    Record: 21-29
    Win totals by season: 3-6-3-9
Job security: Even if Cougars hadn’t won nine last year, they aren’t going to find anyone better.
Notable: WSU has posted one winning season in conference play in the past 10 years (last year) but gone 2-7 or worse six times in that span.

    Sept. 3: vs. Eastern Washington
    Result: Win
    Record: 1-0
Comment: No season opening FCS loss this year.

    Sept. 10: at Boise State
    Result: Win
    Record: 2-0
Comment: While this might look like an upset, it’s not. How times have changed.

    Sept. 17: vs. Idaho
    Result: Win
    Record: 3-0
Comment: Vandals provide ideal cure for Boise State hangover. WSU is complacent and sloppy at the outset but wins going away.

    Sept. 24: Bye
Comment: How do you say re-calibrate in Pirate?

    Oct. 1: vs. Oregon
    Result: Loss
    Record: 3-1/0-1
Comment: The extra rest, the location and the ’15 result in Eugene all screamed W for the Cougars, which is why I went the other way.

    Oct. 8: at Stanford
    Result: Loss
    Record: 3-2/0-2
Comment: Sharper performance from WSU, but Stanford is ready for the challenge after narrow win in Pullman last fall.

    Oct. 15: vs. UCLA
    Result: Win
    Record: 4-2/1-2
Comment: WSU bounces back with all-cylinders showing and topples the undefeated, primed-for-a-loss Bruins.

    Record: 5-2/2-2
    Comment: Decisive victory.

    Oct. 29: at Oregon State
    Result: Win
    Record: 6-2/3-2
Comment: Focus begins to wane as the wins mount and the competition deteriorates. But Luke Falk is the difference in the fourth quarter.

    Nov. 5: vs. Arizona
    Result: Win
    Record: 7-2/4-2
Comment: It’s November, and Washington State is very much alive in the North race.

    Nov. 12: vs. Cal
