That is horrible that CU can only bring in the 14th rated prospect out of the state, if Hemschoot/Spond don't sign with us what a gigantic letdown.

Progressively we lose more and more of our best in-state recruits and we wonder why the state doesn't have an identity with the team, or is the other way around?

If we land Hemschoot, it's less awful.

I would have loved to add Spond, Bonnell and Bell to that list. Mister, too, if he has the grades and test score to qualify. We could have easily used 6 or more in-state guys this cycle. With football continuing to get better at the prep level in CO, locking down the state is becoming increasingly important. With the in-state talent being produced, CU should be able to count on somewhere between 1/4 to 1/3 of its class to come from inside the borders every year. If we could get there, it would have a huge impact on attendance and broadcast ratings for CU games within the state. Maybe more important, it would help to insulate CU recruiting against a bad season if we could still pull the state.

IMO, things like Junior Days, CU Camps and outreach to high school coaches need to become bigger and better in order to make that happen. And we need to show the love with early offers!!!

I agree in that I don't like that we're not in on the top-tier state recruits this year. But I don't think previous years are as bad as you say. For perspective, here are recent CU in-state recruits and their state ranking:

    2006
    Bill Boyer #24
    Steven Fendry #6
    Eric Lawson #14
    Nate Solder #8

    2007
    Anthony Perkins .... Rivals #6, Scout #9
    Shawn Daniels .... Rivals #11. Scout #11
    Ethan Adkins .... Rivals #8, Scout #6
    Ryan Miller .... Rivals #1, Scout #1

    2008
    Curtis Cunningham .... Rivals #4, Scout #4
    Bryce Givens .... Rivals #1, Scout #3
    Patrick Mahnke .... Rivals #9, Scout #14
John Major.... Rivals #2, Scout #1

    2009 (Rivals only)
    Zach Grossnickle .... #18
    Jack Harris .... #2
    Nick Kasa .... #1
    Parker Orms .... #10
    DeVaughn Thornton .... #14

We've done reasonably well in-state in the recent past, and personally, I expect for us to continue this level every year.

Everything is relative, I guess, but only getting 2-3 of the top 10 during those years still seems far below acceptable. Getting 2-3 every year of the top 5 would be (like '08 and '09), maybe our own in-state kids are the biggest "fair weather' recruits?

If we are going to scale back CA and TX recruiting, at least off-set some of that with more in-state players (not just walk-ons).

I know it is a hard argument to make and sounds "romantic" but I just would like more representation from the in-state kids.

At this point motives are completely speculation but if I were a recruit I would be worried about what the future holds at CU in terms of coaching. If the state of Colorado was not in such a disasterous position financially I think it is clear that Hawk would already be gone. If he turns it around next year he stays if he wins 5 or less against a rough schedule it is hard to see the politicians saving him, especially after the election is over.

As I look at the list I see a lot of OK guys but not many I am broken up about losing.

Martin only spent one year in Colorado, he is really a Cali kid, this said had we been at least a bowl team last year I think he would have been better than even to end up a Buff (and though not likely it still wouldn't shock me if he decided to switch to CU before LOI day)

Spond was a CU commit and we lost him when the team continued to lose and it became clear that Hawk is on a hot seat. I don't think he is going to be a superstar but I think he will be a very solid multi-year BCS level starter for somebody.

Onyeali is another Mullen kid who may have already reached his physical peak, I don't think he had much interest in staying in state regardless of what happened at CU.

Bonnell At this point we start getting into kids who are good but not great. Hard to turn down Stanford and I don't know that CU was crazy about him, would have taken him if he was interested but no broken hearts here on either side.

Mister Jones This one hurts but may not be over. Mister is still a question mark for qualifying and may end up on defense if he does but he has the potential to be a stud player. Another one who never would have been lost if we were winning.

Hemschoot is in my mind the big get. He is still very young and could develop into a monster player. If we get him I will be happy with our CO class this year.

I would have liked to see us work a little harder on Bell. Moudy going to kNU makes me wonder but their record with CO OL has not been stellar, a few hits with a lot more misses.

Slavin who we got is very raw but a good enough athlete to turn into a player.

Hinder got a huge amount of press at the start of the year but he was California all along. I truthfully would rather have Hirchman and from what I have seen Munchie.

Most of the rest (other than the kickers who we got one of) look like at best MWC level recruits. This was not a particularly deep year for recruits in CO both in overall numbers as well as in clear quality players. Martin was certainly a national recruit and a few others got some notice but nobody caused DIA to see a rush of recruiters coming in and out like we have had in better years.

Interesting post, Mtn. We've done pretty well in state as far as some of the premier players, lately. This year may just be an anomoly. Hinder was a Cal lock and Martin is heading back home. Mister Jones (and the back from Ohio) are really good players who may or may end up going the juco route. Spond is the only situation that really irks me. I guess I'd call this year a wash if we reel iin Hemscoot.

What worries me is if next year plays out like this year with a disapointing record, some embarrasing losses, and an administration that is slow or unwilling to make a decision we could lose out on what would be for us potentially a much better in-state year.

In terms of winning, Colorado hasn't been relevent in the eyes of the kids in HS right now. If we are seen as a losing program that is unwilling to do what it takes to compete it will be much easier for out of state schools to come in and get kids attention. Once the best players stop coming it is hard to turn that around again.

If we don't start to win next year and fairly early, the coaching change must be made in time to save the recruiting class.

This only further proves Hawk has lost this team and players. We lost one of the top 10 kids in this state to NEBRASKA? And he is from Boulder? WTF Dan?

This really scares me. Our talent was among the top 5 in the Big 12 and we couldn't win..... now our talent is getting worse..... where do we go now? 2 wins no excuses? How many crappy years and recruiting classes are we gonna have to see before Dan gets the boot?

I don't think we went after Bell that hard. I think this was a mistake but I think that's what happened.
