That's what my dad said to me this morning after watching the game last night.

He's impartial or even a bit biased against CU (he went to Mizzou). He thought it was clear that Georgia had better athletes, but that the teams were a lot closer than anyone would have expected. He honestly thinks that we've got the players to win the Big 12 and that Tyler could grow into a special QB.

I then told him we've got to play Mizzou, Oklahoma and Nebraska on the road so the conference schedule isn't doing us any favors. He said, "That's a problem."

Anyway, I thought that was encouraging. Dad knows his football. And I thought it was interesting that I've been more bullish on the CU talent than both 'Message Board Guy' and 'Scouting Service Guy' (not to mention radio/tv 'Talking Head Guy')... but Dad thought I was way too negative on what we have.

The impartial, unbias opinion is interesting. Send your dad rep from me.

the talent is certainly there this season. which is what creates the pressure for Hawkins & Co, to perform this season. no youth excuses, no lack of depth excuses, no "need to get my guys" excuses.

Why haven't questioned the talent so to speak. Its Hawk and the players buying and playing hard for a full game is what has been questioned

This is the most talent Hawk has had during his tenure. Then again, Hawk was part of that sentence.

this. we actually have bcs type talent at the skill positions on offense for a change. Still think the defense lacks quality athletes and depth though but its probably the best defense since Hawk's 1st year.

We have wayyy to many away games to think silly things like talent level and competing for championships. This teams biggest issues have nothing to do with talent, and everything to do with coaching. Until these guys sack up and play a good game on the road,we are not capable of anything worth talking about.

The talent is there to be sure. I am not sure about our overall team speed outside of our WRs and corners, though.

If your dad posted that on this board, he'd get his ass ripped apart! I've been beaten into submission.

We lack depth of speed but we have BCS level speed on the field if it is used right.

DB's CB's are NFL prospects, Jalil has another gear in pads when he needs it, Jimmy is adequete, our frosh backups are fast as well.

Safety - Polk is blazing, just needs to learn how to use it, Perkins is okay but not fast-fast.

Nickel - Orms when he returns is not corner fast but quick enough to cover most slot guys, Vigo as well, Manke's lack of speed hurts as now as he fills in

LB's - We are faster than we have been recently, Major, Rippy, Webb have very good field speed, Beatty is okay, Harrington and Nobriga as futures are very fast, Sipili is a little slow but is a physical presence.

DL - our RE's are all good speed guys, Herrod isn't quite as fast as Kasa but is fast enough and very physical, Uzo-Diribe as a future is very fast but has to learn how to use it. The LEs in Hartigan and West are not outstanding but have enough speed

    On offense

WRs Clemons and Patterson are as fast as anyone out there, WillJeff got deep Saturday, as did Richardson. Simmons is supposed to have speed but never sees the field. Our slots are slow but that won't keep Scotty from at least getting a FA look in the league. I worry about what is behind him since they don't have his field sense.

TE's - I'd like to see what Thornton can do, Deehan and Walters are okay but it frustrates me to see other teams get big plays out of their TEs that we don't.

QB's - Hansen isn't "fast" but is mobile enough to make things happen. Don't really know about Hirschmann.

RBs - This is a place where we don't have the same speed as other teams. Speedy really isn't that speedy, he is quick but Saturday had a five yard lead on the long run and got run down. B-Lock is the same way. The lack of explosive speed at RB has hurt us, teams don't fear the big breakaway run from us.

OL - Not normally thought of as a speed position but we have some guys who are fast for OL, Solder and Miller meet that criteria. Our other OL look reasonably mobile but like the rest of our OL situation it seems like the coaches haven't figured out how to take advantage of it and use it. Our OL blocking on the corners when pulling or moving the line is terrible, guys get there but don't seem to get the key blocks.

ST's Why does it seem like we are the only team that never gets big plays from the return teams. With Patterson, Clemons, etc we should get something but don't.

Overall position by position we are not loaded with speed like a Texas, Oregon, Bama, etc. but are comparable to most of the BCS teams we play. Unfortunately we just don't seem to use the speed we have and fail to contain the speed of our opponents.

Yep. Team speed, especially on defense, leaves a lot to be desired.

The LBs and the safeties for the most part.

“We use about 40 personnel groups on offense per game. I want every player on this team to feel valued and loved. If they don't, how are they going to be motivated?”

    Amen Coach. Amen.

I don't know that there are a lot of safeties in the BigXII who would beat Polk in a footrace. Perkins is not a burner but is at least average. The problem is how they coach it and use it. LBs you can make the same type of comparison. Major, Rippy, and Webb are at least comparable to most other schools in the Big XII.

I'd say exactly zero. Polk has the speed we need. He's working on the experience.

I don't know. If they're not slow, they sure play slow. JMO.

We don't have the pass rush that big-time defenses have and we don't have a whole lot of playmaking at LB. Our offense also really isn't that explosive. We have fast WRs but we don't throw down the field.

I am not trying to be negative here or take anything away from any of our players. As a whole, though, we don't play fast. It's tough to compare yourself to an SEC team, but even in a very-down year, UGA was clearly much faster than us. Their front seven on D in particular seemed quite speedy... AJ green also, obviously, but he's an anomaly freak-type player.

    Maybe it's a scheme thing. I don't know.

Don't avoid the man's question BB. I want to know how fast they can run in a straight line with a unitard!

Well, I read that one of the great advantages we had was that Polk had the speed to come up and stop the run. I also thought, at least, that Major is pretty fast. Don't know about the rest. So, how do you evaluate them, exactly?

You named two guys out of quite a few guys. Polk is fast, Jimmy Smith is fast, Major is fast. There are quite a few other guys who are either horrible at assignment football or they just are not very fast. Do you ever notice gaping holes in the middle of our defense? Is it speed or scheme?

I acknowledge that gaping holes are one thing not lacking in this thread.

I think you should become a coach. Or maybe a "Mel Kiper" guy.

You tell'em DBT. Don't let anyone question Coach Hawkins' schemes. Why if it wasn't for this damn carpal tunnel, I'd go after BB myself. How dare he have an opinion!

I whole-heartedly disagree. I don't think this team is very talented at all. Seriously, go up and down the roster and count how many stars were next to these guys names when we signed them.

Our starting QB and RB are average/below average, who likely wouldn't be starting at 75% of Big Six schools. Our WR corps has lots of talent, but they are under-utilized. Our only 5-star player (Kasa), doesn't even start. Our other two 5-stars players of late left the program.

This is why we suck. It's Hawkins' major downfall. As the old saying goes, in college, "its the Jimmy's and Joe's more than the X's and O's". Just look at most SEC teams (especially LSU), who win IN SPITE of poor coaching because of the talent on the roster.
