This map plots all of the 351 teams in NCAA D1 Basketball.

The concentration of teams as you move East is telling.

No wonder it is so hard for CU to get home games scheduled. Programs in the East have much easier travel options. The absolute best thing that can happen for CU is to establish itself among the semi-elite. Then, it's a nationally-televised game if a decent program comes to Boulder.

I'm not saying anything everyone didn't already know, but when I looked at the visual it really drove it home for me how challenging scheduling is for all sports.

This is Boyle's 4th year, is next year (2014-15), the last year of his refusal to schedule against Northern Colorado?

I remember Boyle saying he'd schedule them as soon as none of the players he recruited were still there.

We have it easy. Look at Hawaii. Talk about isolated. They're 3,000 miles from the nearest D-1 school.

That would be next season, right?

I don't know their roster and whether any Boyle guys redshirted. So either 2014-15 or 2015-16.

Yeah isn't that it? 2015-16 they could be on the schedule?

Yeah I was accounting for that possibility.

I just checked the UNC roster. No redshirt Juniors on the roster. Five regular juniors. I suppose it's possible that Tad could have begun the recruiting process for some or all of the kids who are juniors now.

That's the absolute best thing? Wouldn't establishing ourselves as the undisputed champion of the universe...forever..be better?

I was thinking within the next few years. But, yeah, if you want to look ahead to Boyle's retirement in 2033 after winning his 20th straight national championship we can certainly go there. :wink2:

How does a state with the population and as big as Minnesota only have ONE D-1 basketball school? That's my take away from this map.

There are no pucks or rinks in basketball...

One major state university, lots of small religious affiliated colleges ... and it's much more of a hockey state.

Didn't Minnesota State win a national championship in football when Hayden Fox was coaching there?

Yes ... same year Faber College won the NCAA basketball tournament.

Hockey happens to be more popular in some parts of the NE US as well as the Plains states, many of those states have more than ONE D-1 basketball program AND have a significantly smaller population than Minnesota.

Hockey will always be king in Minnesota, however more kids are starting to play other sports as the cost of playing continues to sky rocket.

I'm guessing hockey isn't as expensive in Minnesota as the rest of the country? Not saying it's cheap though. Around here in the DC area, it's super expensive -- in high school, it's not a "sanctioned" sport so basically unless you are rich, your kid isn't playing for the high school team.

It was a proud accomplishment to finally recognize where some of these obscure basketball schools are located.

    McNeese State
    Wofford
    Nicholls State
    Furman
    St. Bonaventure
    Gonzaga

Unfortunately i'll quickly forget this information by bedtime.

    Lipscomb? Really? Talk about obscure.

I couldn't tell you what fees are these days, but equipment alone is extremely expensive, especially if your kid needs a new pair of skates every year until they stop growing.

Not to mention competitive hockey is all indoors - so unless you have a local bubble ice time will always be expensive.

$300 skates in Colorado are still $300 skates in Minny-so-cold and hockey sticks break, so you need several to make it through a season.

Ice time for consistent, smooth ice is just as sought after in Minny as it is in NE and Colorado, perhaps more so. Just because the lakes freeze doesn't make them ideal for competitive hockey. Maybe with more players, used equipment is more available, but again there's more demand for used stuff in Minny.

As for the Buffs , there's plenty of very decent teams available within a couple hours flight time radius, starting with Wichita St, Creighton, UNMex, UMex St., it's not a killer to put together a very good set of opponents despite the lack of population density, but we're never going to match up with the East Coast (thank gawd!).

$300? Maybe if you want to be laughed at for being poor.

Not sure about that, a $1 isn't a $1 in two different places in this country.
