Colorado Women's Basketball RPI Watch

So novice women's basketball fan question here - is Cal a perennial good team? I understand that Stanford is a national power, but I never really heard much about Cal. Are they someone who will consistently be in the top 3 of the conference and put together Sweet 16 runs or are they a step or two below that?

I wouldn't call Cal a "traditional" women's basketball power. In fact, they were downright horrendous for essentially their entire existence until Joanne Boyle arrived in '05/'06. It was only then that Cal starting making the NCAA Tournament with any regularity (4 of out 6 years Boyle was in Berkeley, one Sweet 16). Previous to Boyle's arrival, Cal had made the NCAA Tournament 3 times in 32 years of their existence. Losing seasons 18 of those 32 years. Boyle left for Virginia two years ago. So, basically, Cal being a top 10 team is a very, very new phenomena.

Cal has, for the last 8 years or so that I have paid any attention to them, mostly been in the post-season (WNIT a couple times, NCAA a couple more times, no post season a couple times) but have not gone deep into either tournament except for the one year they won the WNIT. So they have been a decent team over that time but not close to a top team.

Cal put up a good showing last season, losing in the second round of the NCAA to eventual runner-up Notre Dame. And in 2009 they lost in the third round to UConn. But that was probably their best showing in many years. They have really improved this season. Whether they will have the ability to stay up near the top remains to be seen.

UCLA has been the better team that has sometimes made it into the rankings. And back in the day USC had some good years. But the bottom line for the WBB side of the conference is that its been Stanford and the dwarfs most of the time

Stanford has had an excellent program for as long as Tara Van Derveer has been there since 1985. She's won two national championships--in 1990 and 1992. Were expected to face eventual champion Texas Tech in Missoula Elite 8 in 1993, but Ceal Barry and the Colorado Buffaloes had other ideas and knocked them out of the tournament--only to get run out of the gym by Sheryl Swoops and Texas Tech.

After games thru today, CU WBB rpi is improved from 22 to 20 per Warren Nolan. Probably include CU's win over USC last Sunday as well as wins today by OOC opponents San Diego State, CSU, and New Mexico.

Yeah. Strong night for the Buffs tonight with the MWC results. SDSU looks like it's going to turn into the high quality win we expected.

Illinois can help us out by winning at Michigan tomorrow night.

Michigan is a make or break game for an Illini squad sitting 58th in the RPI. Wolverines are 39th

That would be a huge win for the Illini (and consequently for us) if they can pull it off. It would be great if the Illini could become a top 50 rpi win for us, along with Louisville (solid) and SDSU (borderline right now).

SDSU is sitting 51st the last I saw. Excellent chance for them to get inside and stay. Got Wyoming sitting 66th, probably too much to ask for them to move up to 50

An article from yesterday from FullCourt that addresses Goose's (timely) question and the entire picture in the PAC-12 WBB

Buffs SOS isn't as bad as I expected it to be this year. A number of our opponents have done surprisingly well in conference play and have turned out to be better teams than we would have projected in the pre-season. Some are horrible and Lappe has to step up the scheduling to manipulate RPI a bit, but there have been some very pleasant surprises.

Idaho (11-12, 8-4). Currently 3rd place in the WAC. RPI #148.
UMKC (8-15, 4-6). Currently 7th place in the Summit. RPI #270.
Texas A&M-CC (1-20, 0-10). Currently 10th place in Southland. RPI #336.
San Diego State (16-5, 7-1). Currently tied for 1st place in MWC. RPI #51.
Wyoming (17-4, 6-2). Currently 3rd place in MWC. RPI #65.
Illinois (13-9, 6-4). Currently tied for 5th place in B1G. RPI #57.
CSU (7-14, 3-5). Currently 7th place in MWC. RPI #241.
Denver (11-12, 6-6). Currently tied for 6th place in WAC. RPI #222.
Louisville (19-4, 7-2). Currently tied for 3rd place in Big East. RPI #24.
Utah Valley (9-13, 3-1). Currently tied for 1st place in Great West. RPI #315.
New Mexico (12-9, 4-4). Currently tied for 4th place in MWC. RPI #178.

Next year, we've got to drop the games against teams that are RPI 250+ and replace with teams projected for the 100-200 range. They should still be wins and will do so much more. Frankly, I'd like to see us even go to another level and replace them with games against teams like Purdue, Kentucky, Florida State and Iowa State that we could lose but know will go on to win 20+ games in good conferences.

The UMKC game was done so Kyleesha could have a game close to home from what I remember, but can anyone explain why we plaeyd Texas A&M CC or Utah Valley?

Correct on the UMKC game.
re: TAMU-CC .... we played at their place last season (when the coaches probably wanted a softer road game schedule) so this was the return game; also, they were CU's opponent in the first round of Omni Hotels Classic (Thanksgiving tournament here) and that game is almost always scheduled against a weak opponent to help make sure that CU gets to their own tournamanet championship game.
re: Utah Valley ... my only guess is that CU was having trouble finding an opponent for that last game before Christmas holiday (it was on 12/22) so filled in with who they could get.

Thanks BeBe. I figured at least one of them was for the Omni.

First off, I think the Buffs are a lock for the dance. The entire team would have to be abducted by Al Queda to miss the tourney. That said, the OOC is kinda ouch, and will prolly affect our seed.

(rpi and # of games against ranking groups)

rpi top 50 -- 2
rpi 51 - 100 -- 3
rpi 101 - 150 -- 1
rpi 151 - 200 -- 1
rpi 200 plus -- 3
rpi 300 plus -- 2

I realize that there will most likely be 2-3 games next year against teams in the rpi 250 or above. They're tuneups; all the big conference teams do it. Where they can make a positive change would be to replace the games against teams in the 150 to 250. Using this year as an example, you would replace 3 ooc games. If you dropped these and added one game each from the 3 highest groups (1 vs rpi to 50, 1 vs 51-100, and 1 vs 101-150), your rpi and sos would dramatically improve.

I hope we see some tougher, but better games next season.

Good to see that we can get a convincing win on a night when the team can't shoot.

14-point victory over Oregon State despite shooting 32%. Won the glass, won the turnover battle, got a bunch of assists, and Chucky put the team on her back with 28 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 2 steals.

Also, Jen Reese might be recovering. 10 points from her to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Finally, I want to call out B-Wil's defense. It's been outstanding and tonight she kept it going with 5 steals to go with 4 rebounds and 7 very efficient points (1/2 shooting and 5/6 from the line).

I would guess there will be at least one more game scheduled in the Kansas City area before Ky's playing days are over.

We should schedule a home/home with Wichita State. 3 hours from Kansas City and they've got a decent women's program that should be Top 150 RPI.

Part of the poor shooting was due to the height of Oregon State, but not all of it. We missed some bunnys and took some bad shots--the 3 by Sborov stands out as a bad shot.

B-Wil has become a defensive specialist and does it so well. I am sure that is a new mindset for her, but a player who can do what she does is needed.

Chucky's game last night was all around outstanding. Chucky played 38 minutes and only had 1 turnover. She was knackered by the end of the game. She was sucking air. She played until the final buzzer and was the team leader for the 38 minutes she played. If she wants to play overseas, Europe will welcome her.

CU's defense was outstanding all around. Hargis doesn't look like she did much from the stat line, but she played one of her smarter games. A Wil also played good D. The Wilsons are not afraid to sacrifice their bodies for the team, all in the name of defense.

Two OSU players fouled out and two more had 4 fouls when the game ended. We had nobody in foul trouble at the end of the game for a change.

Best part of the game? I was there! I got my pink t-shirt, had a brief conversation with BeBe, watched the games with my friends and had a great evening in the Keg.

Now for another win on Sunday before I fly home to the cold, snowy Midwest.

We should schedule a home/home with Wichita State. 3 hours from Kansas City and they've got a decent women's program that should be Top 150 RPI.

I'd drive to Wichita for that game. Missouri wouldn't be a bad option either. They knocked off Tennessee last weekend.

#13 Purdue lost by 11 on its home court to unranked Michigan.

#9 Georgia lost by 8 at unranked and 5-6 in SEC play LSU. They also lost by 11 at Illinois (who we beat on their home court).

That Georgia result tells me that CU belongs in the Top 15. Georgia doesn't have a win to match what we did against Louisville either.

Illinois (14-9, 7-4) got a nice 76-66 win over Minnesota (15-10, 4-7) in Champagne.

Very good win for our SOS and RPI.

Oregon is so bad this year that blowing them out dropped us to #27 RPI.

The win tonight at Arizona moved us back up to #26.

Also, Utah's recent good play to get them to 14-10 (5-8) has moved them up to #94, adding 2 Top 100 wins to the Buff resume.

I hadn't noticed this, but San Diego State has found its way into the Top 50 at #46. Illinois is knocking on the door at #52. Wyoming also Top 100 at #71. And Louisville is still in the Top 25 at #23.

Biggest game left is #66 Washington.

Per Warren Nolan, Buffs are #23 after todays win over ASU and wins by our 2 top 50 OOC teams : Louisville & SDSU.

Should move up at least a couple spots in the Top 25, too. There were some losses right in front of us. A couple of them to unranked teams.

Camera's Brian Howell tweeted that he put CU at #16 on his AP ballot. We shall see the results tomorrow but I agree #21 CU could move up with loses by #18 Purdue to unranked Iowa and by #19 Fla State to unranked NC State. Unfortunately Fla State then proceeded to beat the #14 Tar Heels today so they probably stay ahead of CU.

Yes, Florida State stayed at 19. Iowa can only beat ranked teams.

Charlie Creme's latest bracketology has CU playing San Diego State. That would be an interesting rematch. Problem is whoever gets out of Boulder, has to go through UConn to get to Final Four.

I think Creme has made a mistake with that match-up. He has even stated that one of the things the committee tries to do is avoid any rematches in either rounds 1 or 2. So I doubt we would see that happen. But I do like getting the 5 seed instaed of the 6 he had the Buffs at last week.

I'm liking the 5 seed over the 6 seed also. I just can't see a rematch in the 1st round of the tourney. In all of his predictions so far, if we get out of Boulder, we have to deal with UConn or Baylor. :wtf:
