[IMG]Ohio State just suffered through the worst Memorial Day in program history.*You can read about the details here -- coach Jim*Tressel resigning and further grounds for major NCAA sanctions -- *but that's not our focus on the Pac-12 blog.

Our focus, of course, is what it means for the Pac-12. And that is two things.

First, briefly, it's a good bet the conference champion will not be facing Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. The loss of Tressel and*a handful of player suspensions almost certainly will be too much to overcome to win the Big Ten.

Second, Colorado's visit to Columbus on Sept. 24, which once looked like a get-paid-for-a-pounding matchup, now looks winnable.

The Buckeyes, who will be*led by interim coach Luke Fickell,*at the very least will not have quarterback Terrelle Pryor, leading rusher Daniel "Boom" Herron, No. 2 wide receiver DeVier Posey, All-Big Ten offensive tackle Mike Adams and backup defensive end Solomon Thomas

The Buckeyes already were replacing several key players on defense: end Cameron Heyward, linebackers Ross Homan and Brian Rolle and cornerback Chimdi Chekwa.*Still, the general feeling was the depth was there to keep winning.

But the plot might thicken, according to a Sports Illustrated report*that*alleges at least 28 players traded memorabilia or autographs for money and tattoos since 2002. Nine are on the current roster, including*two returning starters on the defensive line, tackle John Simon and end Nathan Williams, as well as other players in the mix on the depth chart.

If these players are found to also have violated rules against receiving extra benefits, it's likely they, too, won't play against Colorado. Ohio State probably won't wait for the NCAA to hand out suspensions. It will try to be proactive, falling on its sword with hopes that will soften the eventually penalties.

There's depth, and then there's playing what amounts to a second*unit against the Buffaloes, who welcome back 14 starters from a team that went 5-7 and was good enough to beat Georgia and Kansas State.

Colorado's first five games go like this: Hawaii, California, Colorado State, Ohio State and Washington State.

We are not ready to term this a prediction, Buffaloes fans, but it no longer is completely absurd to dream of heading to Stanford on Oct. 8 with a 5-0 record.

Still going to be a tough game due to talent disparity, but there is no reason to think the game is a no-hoper. That program is a mess.

Even if the Buckeyes are more talented than the Buffs, there is still the issue of chemisitry.

Also the fact that they will be breaking in a new head coach just like we are.

All this does is make the game at Stanford the biggest no-hoper of the year. The OSU game is still probably #2 or #3 on the list.

i thought Ubben was decent (at least he produced content)....it was Tim Griffin who sucked Deloss inside out.

Griffin was like reading the Dallas Morning News or the Austin Statesman or Houston Chronicle. non stop texas/ATM humping. if Kirk Bohls says Colt has a 14" penis, Griffin would "run" with it.

As Ted points out it all comes down to who those other 28 players were, and if they are still on the team. If that is the case then we may be facing many more suspensions. Playing the second string is much different than playing the starters with a few new faces. It also will come down to how much OSU loses because of this. If they get a bowl ban for 2 years do juniors and seniors get to transfer for free? If so I see many people leaving OSU. Do they get scholarship reductions? Does the NCAA mandate some serious punishment from the AD down to the S&C coach for lack of institutional control? If that happens how many of them resign? Not yet getting my hopes up, but OSU looks to be in for a very, very bad summer. All it does right now is make an upset at the shoe seem more possible.

After thinking about it for a while, I don't think there's enough time for the NCAA to do a proper investigation and come to any conclusions prior to the upcoming season. I suspect we'll get the whole team, minus the ones who have already been suspended and Tressel. Any additional sanctions won't be imposed for a long time, IMO.

    Sanctions, yes.

But as S2S points out, if additional players are shown to have gotten tattoos, favorable car deals, etc., etc., etc. it'll be hard for tOSU to keep those guys on the field (especially with an investigation looming, and especially after the bowl game BS last year).

Typicall case of fans/media over analyzing things before a game. When the ball is kicked off none of this stuff matters. At the end of the day most of whatever players they have playing are still going to more talanted then ours and the game will still be on a field in Ohio in front of 100,000 of their fans. Not saying we can't win the game, but it's still going to be very difficult even with of all these problems OSU is having.

So you're sayin' there's a chance? If you're not saying we can't win the game, are you also saying we could win the game?

Typical dismissive JRK trying to be the smartest guy in the room.

You are completely delusional if you think the cloud that hangs over that program will not affect on-field play next season. For one, they are likely to lose the suspended players for the entire season. Also, they will have a first-time head coach with no job security trying to keep them afloat.

Talent still matters quite a bit, but look further than USC in 2010 to see what can happen when a prestigious program having issues with the NCAA tries to break in a new head coach. They lost five games. How many of those teams they lost to had more talent than them?

CU will still have to play very well to have a shot and it is still a probable loss, but to argue none of the off-field stuff matters is lazy analysis. Because you are essentially trying to argue that Ohio State is no worse off today than before all this stuff came down. Not buying it.

I tend to agree. The NCAA investigators will take their sweet time investigating any improprieties and handing down any sanctions against one of their prize cash cows.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of the NCAA's investigators get some money handshakes, the use of a few cars and some free tattoos during their investigation.

The NCAA is prone to be content to let the public shame and embarrassment be visited on Ohio State during the 2011 season in hopes that Ohio State will end up cleaning house on their own accord before the NCAA has to do anything.

This will free the NCAA's enforcement bureau to focus their wrath on Alcorn State.

I still don't think we beat tOSU but the Hawaii game could really de-rail all the good feeling. I really don't like our chances in Hawaii. :sad1:

In the long run, that will hurt OSU, though. While it might not mean much for this year, the sword of Damacles is now hanging over the entire program. It will make it difficult to recruit. And yes, I know it's still Ohio State. The thing is, that Michigan, MSU, PSU, ND and Wisconsin are all going to be after the same kids. OSU would probably be better served to simply prostrate themselves to the NCAA and take their punishment now. The NCAA won't do that, though.

We might just have a.... chance? I remember a couple of years ago watching the standard 9 AM Ohio State vs ________ game on ESPN and Navy was giving them a run for it. Their QB situation sounds like a mess, so I'm sure they'll try to run the ball a ton. Their defense will still be pretty good, so hopefully the OL has a good day and Tyler does as well.

This is why I am hoping there are more than a handful of those other 28 players still playing currently, and that quite a few of them are on defense.

i don't like the Hawaii game either....however, i'm not going to let a road game against a last year bowl team with a returning QB get me down. while Ted maybe gives us a possible 5-0, i probably take 3-2 and 4-1 for sure, no questions asked.
