There have been a lot of people (myself included), concerned over the thought of CU giving out a sixth scholarship to the class of 2012. With 'Nik's post yesterday, it seems like a given that we will have a sixth member of this recruiting class, so I thought I'd take a look over the roster and see if we're freaking out over nothing or if we should be concerned.

Note: the players listed on here who have not committed or signed LOI's with the Buffs are purely speculation on my part. I tried to use common sense, taking in to account our team needs and players that are supposedly high on us. So while I am cautiously optimistic about some of the players I put down, others are pure guesses. I also removed all walk-ons. No offense to the Beaus, but this is purely about scholarships, and honestly I doubt they get much PT in the future anyway (would love to be proven wrong on that one guys, so keep working).

    2012-13 Buffs (6 incoming freshmen)

This is the lineup we're looking at next year - assuming that we have zero attrition (note: I used Tayler as our sixth recruit, but it could easily be Marvelle Harris or Chris Jones or someone we don't know about could be that sixth). Honestly, there's a lot of speculation about players leaving, but it doesn't affect next year's numbers anyway, so I'm keeping everyone on. Honestly, I think Nik's lineup is pretty dead-on for next year, so we probably won't see many minutes for Shannon, Ben Mills, Talton/Tayler and Jenkins. Two of the frosh will redshirt, and for the purpose of this exercise I think it will be Jenkins and Talton (note: I'm incredibly high on Talton and think he's going to be a steal, but it might take him a year to adjust to the speed of the PAC-12). So what does that lead to for the next season?

    2013-14 Buffs (2 incoming freshmen)

Sharpe and Mills are gone freeing up two scholarships to use on the class of 2013. Sharpe is due to his knees, and Mills is due to wanting more PT. Roberson is also an early entry for the draft concern, but I wanted to keep him because it makes the hypothetical team more dangerous. This is my post, let me be. Talton and Jenkins have redshirted. For recruiting, we brought in Hopkins & Jones, which is my #1 dream for 2013 that doesn't involve Isaac Hamilton (note: it wouldn't surprise me if Dakarai Allen is a Buff in 2013 either. Keep an eye on him as he fits the Boyle profile perfectly). With those changes, all of a sudden you're starting to see a lot more balance in between the classes. I'm incredibly nervous about the thinness of our front court, but this is hypothetical, so I'm now officially worrying over nothing.

    2014-15 Buffs (3 incoming freshmen)

Three years from now, our classes are almost perfectly balanced. And honestly, if Josh Scott is as good as many think he could be (or XJ), we may have three scholarships to use on the class of 2015. So does this mean that the six recruits in one year plan is completely foolproof? Hell no. There are still lots of things that could change and we could end up with a serious backlog of players in one class. But I can see what Boyle & Co are trying to do here, and it makes sense. The lesson in all of this? Tad Boyle is a motherf**king mad scientist, and we should all stop questioning him.

In a side note, if we can land the players that are listed on this depth chart, the Buffs are going to be VERY good and will be a consistent top 20-30 program that has a sweet 16 run or two in them.

You seem so sure that Sharpe and mills are just going to give up their schollies? Let's not forget that they are getting free school regardless of their basketball situation.

Great breakdown Goose! This does help to put puzzle pieces together. And man, I hope you're right about the future recruits. That's pretty much ideal! I'd Rep you but apparently I need to share the love more (still not sure exactly how that works).

I think it's likely that we'll see attrition.

Assuming no transfers or medical hardships is unrealistic.

For Sharpe -- I think he's going to be a medical hardship. I really do. I feel horrible for the kid because he's done nothing wrong, he's loved by his teammates and he's worked his ass off, but his knees just aren't the same. He just isn't the same player. With a medical hardship, his schooling would still be paid for.

For Mills -- I know nothing. I just know that there's a lot of smoke around him possibly looking around for other opportunities. He's not getting PT here, and it's going to get worse once Scott & Gordon show up next year. It wouldn't surprise me if he tried to go somewhere else and make a run at it.

And once again, I want to clarify that these are just pure speculation on my part. The Sharpe one is a bit of an educated guess, but until something official comes out, it's safer to just assume I'm an idiot who is speculating (which, to be honest, is what I am).

I think the assumption is mills would transfer and Sharpe would take a medical hardship, so he'd still be on scholarship.

EDIT- nm, i need to type faster!

Word on Mills is that the coaches wanted to redshirt him this year and he refused. So they got it out of the way in the opener and haven't really played him since. To me, this sounds like a guy with one foot out the door who wanted to reserve his redshirt for the mandated year of sitting out after a transfer.

I know we haven't seen Sharpe play much recently, but I don't believe his knees are that bad. He lacks some of the quickness, lateral movements, etc. But has anyone seen the kid dunk, if you can get that high, you will never qualify for a medical hardship.

With us looking like we're going to take a sixth guy it looks like a long shot for Webb to earn a scholarship but Boyle is a man of integrity and will give him a chance. If he doesn't, I hope he's able to earn a few minutes off the bench because he can score. I guess in practice he also plays really good D but he hasn't played enough to see if that transfers to games.

Transferring for Mills would be in his best interest if he wants to play. Not exactly what level player he is but hopefully if that's true he lands on his feet and is productive.

Not true. Will Jefferson was still fast and agile on the days he was able to go and he got a medical hardship waiver for football.

    On Webb:

He doesn't play good defense in practice. I'm not exactly sure where you heard that, but it just isn't the case. He doesn't really do anything on either end of the floor. His ball handling is suspect, he's not strong with the ball, can't create his own shot, etc. He's a spot up shooter, that's it. If Boyle gave him a scholarship, I'd be extremely disappointed. Webb is not a Division 1 basketball player. He seems like a great kid who has an amazing attitude, but he's just not good enough to get playing time in this program.

I heard that from Beau's dad before the Arizona game which came from Beau earlier that day about Boyle's comments. Where are you getting your information?

In my experience, Parents are always the least biased about their children's performance, especially when it comes to sports.

I'm essentially the only member of the media that actually goes to practice and watches. So, practice.

Boyle is very open to walk-ons earning scholarships. Providing them with the opportunity and them actually having a realistic shot are two very different things.

Ok maybe I should have been more clear. If Webb all the sudden starts showing something in practice that proves he belongs, he'll get a look for a scholly. But it's not like Boyle is thinking that Webb is worthy of a scholarship at this point.
