Signing Day Primer – Offense

Program Note … Signing Day is Wednesday, February 3rd. As usual, CU at the Game is taking the day off, so you don’t have to. “The Ticker” will be up and running around 7:30 a.m., MT, with complete bios of CU’s new recruits posted as the Recruiting Class of 2016 becomes official. There will also be coverage of the Mike MacIntyre press conference that afternoon, with updates posted throughout the day …

To help get you prepared, below is a look at the potential recruits on offense, with a look at defensive recruits coming next weekend.

Quarterbacks

Roster (notes: class status is for 2016 season … returning starters in bold):

Sefo Liufau, Sr.; Jordan Gehrke, Sr.; T.J. Patterson, Jr. (walk-on); Cade Apsay, So.; Steven Montez, R-Fr.

Class of 2016:

- Sam Noyer

Just the facts … Committed June 2nd … Sam Noyer is a 6’3″, 193-pound pro-style quarterback from Beaverton, Oregon. Noyer runs a reported 4.72 in the 40-yard dash. Rivals bio Scout bio

What others say about Noyer … Noyer is considered to be a three-star prospect by both Rivals and Scout. Rivals has Noyer as the No. 20 pro-style quarterback in the nation, and No. 7 player overall out of the state of Oregon this cycle. Scout has Noyer as the No. 15 quarterback out of the west, and the No. 68 quarterback overall.

Recruiting Notes … When Noyer committed last June, it appeared that the CU quarterback roster was set. Liufau still had two years of eligibility remaining, with Cade Apsay, Steven Montez and Sam Noyer all lined up in a straight line behind him. Since then, the roster has been anything but static. Liufau was injured late in the 2015 season, and is out for the spring … and perhaps next fall.

The past few weeks, a pair of quarterbacks were in the news. Tennessee quarterback Sheriron Jones, a former four-star recruit, transferred to Colorado, and then, two weeks later, received a release from his scholarship. The Buff Nation has now turned its attention to Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb, who will be graduating this spring with one year of eligibility remaining. Webb visited Boulder with his family in mid-January, but no commitment was received. Webb still has a visit to Auburn planned for February, with no announcement expected until March (at the earliest).

Running Backs

Roster:

Running backs Phillip Lindsay, Jr.; Michael Adkins, Jr.; Joey Tuggle Jr. (walk-on); Patrick Carr, So.; Kyle Evans, So. (walk-on); Dino Gordan, R-Fr.

FullbacksGeorge Frazier, Jr.

Class of 2016:

- Anthony Julmisse – RB/Athlete

Just the facts … Committed October 2nd … Anthony Julmisse is a 6’0″, 180-pound athlete from Plantation, Florida. He runs a reported 4.5 in the 40. Rivals bio Scout bio

What the others say about Julmisse … Julimisse is considered to be a three-star prospect by Rivals and Scout. According to Scout, Julimisse is the 11th-best running back prospect out of Florida this recruiting Class, and the 101st-highest rated running back in the nation.

- Patrick Taylor – RB

Just the facts … Committed August 3rd … Patrick Taylor is a 6’3″, 211-pound athlete from Humble, Texas, who runs a reported 4.43 in the 40 Rivals bio Scout bio

What others say about Taylor … Taylor is considered to be a two-star prospect by Rivals, but a three-star prospect by Scout. According to Scout, Taylor is the No. 15 running back out of the state of Texas this year, and the 88th-highest rated running back in the nation.

Recruiting Notes … It’s difficult to pigeon-hole either Julmisse or Taylor as “just” a running back. Both have been recruited by Colorado as athletes, and could be used as slot receivers, in a manner similar to how Donovan Lee was used by the Buffs last season.

The Buffs hosted a four-star running back recruit, Rakeem Boyd, from Houston, the weekend of January 22nd-24th (Rivals bio). Boyd, the No. 8 running back in the nation, has been a Texas A&M commit since August.

Wide Receivers

Roster:

Wide Receivers Shay Fields, Jr.; Devin Ross, Jr.; Donovan Lee, Jr.; Bryce Bobo; Jr. Robert Orban, Jr. (walk-on); Joseph Hall, Jr. (walk-on); Sean Grundman, Jr. (walk-on); Danny Galloway, Jr. (walk-on); Lee Walker, So.; Jay MacIntyre, So.; Xavier Cochrane, So. (walk-on); Bradley Garcia, So. (walk-on); Justin Jan, R-Fr.; Peter Lynch, R-Fr. (walk-on)

Tight EndsSean Irwin; Sr.; Chris Hill, Jr. (walk-on); Brian Boatman, Jr. (walk-on); Dylan Kennedy, So.; Hayden Jones, So.; Chris Bounds, R-Fr.

Class of 2016:

- Kabion Ento – WR – Junior College (signed)

Just the facts … Signed December 16th … Kabion Ento is a 6’3″, 175-pound wide receiver from East Central (Mississippi) Community College. Rivals bio

What others say about Ento … Ento was considered as a two-star prospect, but comes to Colorado from the junior college ranks. Ento, 19, played two seasons at East Central (Mississippi) Community College, earned first-team South All-State honors this past fall from the MACJC (Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges). The honor also netted him first-team honors on the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region 23 Team.

Ento will have three years to play two at Colorado.

- Johnny Huntley III – WR

Just the facts … Committed August 4th … Johnny Huntley III is 6’3″, 190-pound wide receiver from Plantation, Florida. Huntley runs a reported 4.58 in the 40. Rivals bio Scout bio

What others say about Huntley … Huntley is considered to be a three-star prospect by both Rivals and Scout. Rivals as Huntley as the No. 77 wide receiver in the nation this year, and the No. 68 recruit out of the state of Florida overall. Scout has Huntley as the No. 59 wide receiver in the country, the No. 27 wide receiver in the south, and the No. 12 wide receiver out of Florida.

- Derrion Rakestraw – WR

Just the facts … Committed June 11th … Derrion Rakestraw is a 6’3″, 175-pound wide receiver from Canton, Georgia. Rakestraw runs a reported 4.5 in the 40. Rivals bio

What others say about Rakestraw … Rakestraw is considered to be a two-star prospect by Rivals, but a three-star prospect by Scout.

Recruiting Notes … Another CU verbal commit from the Class of 2016, Trey Udoffia, may be a wide receiver for the Buffs, but will be listed – at least for the next ten days or so – as a defensive back. All we know for certain about the recruiting Class of wide receivers is that Ento has a leg up on the rest of new wide receiver recruits, as he is already in Boulder, and will participate in spring practices starting March 4th.

The Buffs hosted a former four-star wide receiver the weekend of January 22nd-24th. Juwann Winfree was a four-star recruit who signed with Maryland (Rivals bio), but was dismissed for violating the school’s code of conduct. Winfree spent this past season at Coffeyville Community College, and has been a commit to Pittsburgh since December.

Offensive Linemen

Roster:

Alex Kelley, Sr.; Shane Callahan, Sr.; Sully Wiefels, Sr.; Gerrad Kough, Jr.; Jonathan Huckins, Jr.; Sam Kronshage, Jr.; Jeromy Irwin, Jr.; Colin Sutton, Jr.; Connor Center, Jr.; John Lisella, So.; Josh Kaiser, So.; Isaac Miller, R-Fr; Dillon Middlemiss, R-Fr; Tim Lynott, R-Fr.; Aaron Haigler, R-Fr.

Class of 2016:

- Chance Lytle – OT

Just the facts … Committed October 26th … Chance Lytle is a 6’7″, 291-pound offensive lineman from San Antonio, Texas Rivals bio Scout bio

What others say about Lytle … Lytle is rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals, but a three-star prospect by Scout. According to Scout, Lytle is the No. 15 offensive tackle out of the state of Texas this year, and the No. 111 offensive tackle in the nation.

- Terriek Roberts – OL

Just the facts … Committed June 21st … Terriek Roberts is a 6’6″, 255-pound offensive lineman from South high school in Denver. Rivals bio Scout bio

What others say about Roberts … Roberts is considered to be a two-star prospect by Rivals, but a three-star prospect by Scout. According to Scout, Roberts is the best offensive tackle out of the state of Colorado this year, the 14th-best tackle in the west, and 83rd-best offensive tackle in the nation.

- Hunter Vaughn – OT (Gray-shirt – Class of 2017)

Just the facts … Committed November 14th … Hunter Vaughn is a 6’8″, 260-pound offensive lineman from Parker, Colorado (Legend) Rivals bio Scout bio

What others say about Vaughn … Vaughn is rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals, but a three-star prospect by Scout. According to Scout, Vaughn is the third-best offensive tackle out of the state of Colorado this year, the 20th-best tackle in the west, and the 101st-best offensive tackle in the nation (which is not bad considering he played his senior year as a 17-year old).

Colby Pursell – OT (likely Gray-shirt – Class of 2017)

Just the facts … Committed January 18th … Colby Pursell is a 6’3″, 289-pound offensive lineman from Newhall, California (Hart) Rivals bio Max Preps

What others say about Pursell … Pursell is rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals, but was not in the Scout database when he committed.

Recruiting Notes … Colorado has a pretty well established pipeline for offensive linemen. There will be significant attrition after the 2017 season, but there are six underclassmen getting ready to compete for playing time over the next two seasons, with two recruits from the Class of 2016 and two recruits from the Class of 2017 in line. That being said, there are not a great deal of stars associated with these recruits, so the hope is that the CU coaching staff can develop these young players.

Coming next weekend … Defensive recruits
