CU at UCLA Pre-Pregame thread

Need to create turnovers and be bold on offense, trade punches early and score consistently or it will be another ASU game.

putting aside the back and forth for a moment, i would like to address how we might be able to win against fucla.

firstly, i believe this might be the worst mismatch on our schedule, talent-wise, and that says a lot. usc and stanford have a lot of guys too, of course, but i think ucla looks physically loaded. they have had a lot of injuries, but their 2s and 3s are really good athletes.

so, how do we win? i think we've got to try to get this thing turned into an ugly game. slow it down. slug it out. sefo isn't going to win this game for us. we need to eat clock and dirty it up so that they play down to our level. run, run, run. don't turn it over. keep their offense off the field as much as possible. we're going to need a defensive masterpiece game and probably a score from the D to win. on offense, i'd try hard to keep pounding and pounding and then hope i could pull out some trickery when they aren't expecting it.

we aren't going to score 40 in this game. there is no way. i'd dance a happy dance with 17-13 win or something like that.

facts suggest we're going to get mud-holed in the worst possible fashion. but, it is still college ball and with a few breaks we have a puncher's chance. it would be the biggest win in mm's career of course.

Makes perfect sense. UCLA is both good and fast, a bad combination for a team that lacks both.

They want to be flashy, put on a show.

Make them stand on the sidelines, get them overanxious and frustrated. Let them push to make something happen and turn it into mistakes.

This has happened to UCLA teams in the past. Probably the best recomendation for us winning.

Biggest thing with this that UCLA has a freshman QB. You've got to make him beat you.

Like any talented freshman QB, it's a coin flip what we'll see.

Rosen's game-by-game raw QBR & adjusted QBR:
Virginia -- 90.8 / 91.6
UNLV -- 53.5 / 39.6
BYU -- 5.7 / 7.6 (odds are we'll never see that guy again)
Arizona -- 96.9 / 95.2
ASU -- 37.5 / 52.4
Stanford -- 42.3 / 54.3
Cal -- 86.1 / 89.1

Basically, when he doesn't throw INTs he puts up huge numbers. What really helps Rosen is that his OL protects him. He has only been sacked 9 times all season. Throwing him off his game will be a lot more about mixing coverages than it will about blitzing to get pressure -- because that probably won't work.

If we get some folks back on the O line, run the ball, help out the D via longer possessions. Set up some passing success down the field. If UCLA locks down our run game.... Not a good thing.

Tough match-up for us talent wise, but the Rose Bowl can get pretty quiet if we can get in front of things a bit. Fans a long way from the field.

Going to need some bounces, run game success, and fewer offensive mistakes to keep us in this one.

This. Not much to add here. I'll go one step further and say that we must win the turnover battle to even have a chance at this one. A freshman QB could help with that. While I agree with Nick that blitzing to put pressure on Rosen might be futile, I don't have confidence that anybody in our secondary not named Tedric or Chido is capable of making enough plays, even with mixed coverages. I also worry about our LB's getting exposed in coverage so I'd like to see some blitzes up the middle. Hopefully Leavitt has some packages up his sleeve to dial up the pressure. Rosen makes bad throws when he has to escape the pocket.

A lot hinges on the injury news tomorrow.
We can not expect to win anything with our oline as beat up as they are. I can't fathom what it would be like with 3 or so of those guys hurt. Not sure we will see Shay back this week, but we desperately need a deep threat in this game.

See my stats thread. CU has not been good in the red zone this year. We've had turnovers (including on downs), missed FGs and haven't gotten TDs at a high enough rate.
Stupid penalties are a big part of our red zone production. Hell drives in general for that matter. If we don't have enough talent and injuries too, we have to be disciplined enough to get around it. Other words, stop stepping on our dick.

I wanted to make mention that in all likelihood Nelson Spruce will become the All-time Pac 12 leader in receptions during this game. Quite a feat for the young man and something I hope gets the acknowledgment it deserves during the game. It has been awesome watching him.

Yea, gotta love Spruce. One of my All Time Favorite Buffs. He has came in to a crappy program and done the most he can. He has been very consistent and love watching him play. To think we almost lost him with that dumb little incident his senior year just before graduation. Love me some Spruce a very nice young man you would not mind seeing your daughter date or your son to look up to.

that's QUITE an accomplishment, and will have passed several GREAT WR's! congrats!

Looks like we will be lucky to not have a 3d stringer starting at OL against UCLA. Joys.

I'd go with Wiefels and Kough at guard and slide Callahan to RT before I'd start Lisella. Lisella will be overmatched against UCLA.

Yea, would prefer that at well. At the least you are are able to hide the deficiency a bit since it's not at a tackle. Callahan has showed he can play at RT at least.

How to beat UCLA?. So we need to pressure Rosen, slow down their run game and make big plays on offense...dink and dunk will not work...we will need to score 40 to win.

Outside of USC, this is the worst match up talent wise for us IMO...fingers crossed. We took this team to double OT last year, and UCLA is not that good at home, so maybe there's an outside chance.

What problem was that? I never heard of any incident.

He reminds me a lot of Wes Welker.
