CU track and field: Buffs look to change perception at NCAA prelims

The perception is that Colorado's track and field program is a distance-running program.

Given the success of the distance runners, it's no wonder.

Since 1996, the Buffaloes have produced 11 individual national championships in track and field — all in distance running events. Chuck Rogers was the last Buff to win a title in something other than a distance run, and that came in 1966 when he won the pole vault.

As good as they have been, however, the reality is that CU's program isn't all about endurance running. This week, CU is sending 18 athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, including seven in non-distance events.

Looks like Abrianna Torres will miss the cut for the finals. After 3 rounds, she sits in 36th place and needed to be top 16 to advance to the finals and then top 12 to advance to the NCAA championships.

After the women's 400m hurdles finishes, the men's 1500m begins in about 20 minutes. Ben Saarel will be in heat 2 and Jake Hurysz will be in heat 3.The top 5 from each heat will advance to the finals and the next 5 best times.

Saarel just gets edged out at the finish, but it doesn't matter because he advances anyway. Up next is Jake Hurysz.

Elizabeth Tremblay will be competing for the Buffs in the 4th heat of the women's 800m coming up in a few minutes

Tremblay finishes in 6th place and probably not good enough to qualify.

Up next is the mens 10000m featuring Buffs Morgan Pearson, Pierce Murphy, and Joe Bosshard. The final event of the night is the womens 10000m with Abby Levene.

16 minutes into the men's race but I can't really tell where the Buffs are.

We're already underway with the men's hammer throw as the only event until later this afternoon. Alex Kizirian is in the 1st heat and currently in 4th place after the first round. There are 3 heats but I'm not sure how they determine who advances.

It looks like the top 16 advance in the hammer throw and then the top 12 go to the NCAA championships. Kizirian is currently in 7th going into his last throw. I would guess that he would probably need to score a little bit better to advance.

Kizirian does not improve on his last throw and now drops to 8th place. I'm thinking that it will be difficult for him to be able to advance to the next round, but we'll see with 2 more flights to go.

After 2 of 3 flights, Kizirian is in 20th place and looks to be eliminated.
