BOULDER – The University of Colorado women’s soccer team won its third straight match on Sunday afternoon, defeating Iowa State 2-1 in overtime at Prentup Field.

The Buffaloes fell behind early after an Iowa State goal in just the fourth minute. Midfielder Haley Albert sent a ball past CU’s back line and forward Koree Willer had a clean look to send her shot top shelf and give the Cyclones the 1-0 advantage.

“Iowa State is a very well coached team,” said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. “I have a lot of respect for [head coach] Tony [Minatta] and what he’s doing with the program. We knew it was going to be a battle today. We gave up the early goal, but I felt really it was some of the best soccer we’ve played. We dug ourselves a hole, but I was pleased with how we responded.”

A large contingent of ISU fans went home disappointed as the Buffs figured out how to score late in regulation and early in OT to stay undefeated v ISU. Still, it took an opportunistic goal from Danica Evans who was able to pounce on a cross that was deflected by the keeper to get the equalizer. When OT began ISU looked a bit more dangerous, as they were early in the match, but the work of Erin Greening earned the Buffs a PK.

ISU came in with a "signature" win v #10 Pepperdine and like CU they defeated Colorado College 3-0 on Friday night in Colorado Springs. For much of the match CU seemed to be willing to launch long balls into the box that had little chance of finding a teammate as the Buffs were outnumbered and didn't have the height or strength to compete. Kudos to ISU for coming in with a game plan that made it very difficult for the Buffs to use their technical skills to find open space as they constantly were able to outnumber the Buffs in the final third and at the same time were able to move the ball into the attack. Fortunately, after their early goal ISU wasn't able to get many quality chances.
