BOULDER — The Coors Events Center magic was back on Sunday afternoon as the University of Colorado volleyball team shocked No. 6 Stanford to earn its first ever win over the Cardinal, ending a 14-match losing streak 3-1 (25-23, 27-25, 23-25, 25-21).

“I’m happy because this group of players is the group that was able to have this extraordinary win and to change what’s been happening,” head coach Liz Kritza said. “The last time we played Stanford here, it was a really high level match. We’ve been a team that can knock off anybody coming into our gym and we can play a certain number of sets with any team in the country. But this win is significant because it’s actualizing what these girls put in to build this program. I could not be prouder of the effort.”

Sophomore Gabby Simpson was on fire, hammering a career-high 25 kills while hitting .405 with just eight errors on 42 attacks. Senior Alexis Austin had 17 kills in the win.

“We’ve been trying to beat them for four years now,” Austin said. “To finally get that win, it’s great. And now we have to carry it on to all the other games.”

“It feels great,” senior Nicole Edelman said. “I remember freshman year getting swept in three pretty easily. I think it shows all of the dedication and hard work that we’ve put in. Alexis and I have been playing against most of those starters for a long time, because most of them are seniors. They’re all great players, but it definitely feels good to get that win.”

Congrats to the volleyball team. GREAT EFFORT!

Now, time to head south next weekend (after hopefully a little celebrating today and some good work during the week) and gore the wildcats and exorcise the sun devils.

I view going south and celebrating as the same thing. Wrong thread?

Great match. Wish I had been in Coors instead of in my living room!

Maybe the most fun match I've been to. And not just because we won (suck it, cardinal) but there were some wild volleys, evenly matched teams, and the crowd got going pretty good a couple times.

The Utah and Rice losses are killing us. Also, it would have been nice to get a split with the L.A. schools.

It's weird for me to think that, as you say, a Pac 12 loss to Utah is probably going to be the worst of the year***, as they are currently at #119 at RPI. (***This assumes of course, definitely not a given, given how tough all the teams are (as Cal just showed), the Buffs don't get upset in any of their remaining conference matches) Hopefully, given the strength of the conference and RPI's emphasis of wins and losses of your opponents, Utah won't fall too much in RPI even if they keep losing. (I believe the RPI calculation includes a column showing wins and losses to teams in the 200-299 range, so CU wouldn't want to show a loss in that column. Also, a "bad" loss for RPI purposes (a loss actually decreases your otherwise calculated RPI # by a position or two), only happens if a team loses to a team with a loss to a team with a 285 or worse RPI.)

Re Rice, that loss doesn't look like it will be that bad, at least in the RPI terms that NCAA tournament selection committees seem to use a lot. They are currently #71 in RPI this week, and an analysis user "Blue Penguin" did last week (this week's isn't out yet) in the Volleytalk forum estimates they'll end up #59 if they continue to perform and win the matches they'll be favored to win. (This makes it looks like this year's "worst" non-conference loss will be quite a bit better than last year's, when the Buffs lost to South Dakota, who ended up #92 in RPI.)

While losing to Illinois isn't really killing us, they have had a few losses since CU lost to them. Yes, I know their losses are to high quality B1G teams, but I'd like to see them in the top 10.
