The wide receiver experiment is over.

Thornton's big issue at TE had been the physicality required. I have to wonder whether he's going to be able to make any headway in that regard after spending the last year doing his S&C with a focus on playing WR instead of TE. He's listed at 230 lbs on the depth chart and that seems at least 15 lbs light to me.

    Nick Kasa: 6'6" 260lbs
    DaVaughn Thornton: 6'4" 230 lbs
    Kyle Slavin: 6'4" 245 lbs
    Scott Fernandez: 6'3" 250 lbs
    Vincent Hobbs: 6'3" 240 lbs
    Sean Irwin: 6'4" 230 lbs
    Austin Ray: 6'6" 240 lbs

silver lining in the meta sense is that the coaches are now more comfortable with depth at WR with the 2 new frosh joining the mix.

Thornton has been a big disappointment thus far. I remember him being a borderline offer, and most were clamoring for us to offer him thinking he would be a star

Hindsight 20/20. He was a big target at a position of need. No need to close the book on him yet though. Several guys don't "get it" until their Jr or Sr seasons.

I would be surprised if he ever sees significant time on offense again. May have to prove his value on special teams. If not I could see them telling him he has had his four years and they need his scholly for someone else next year.

He's a very good athlete but hasn't turned that into a football player so far.

This. he's a little light but good hands can overcome a lot while he sorts that out. Practice practice practice.

I think his biggest issue is poor instincts. He makes a lot of mistakes by simply not playing smart football.

Bottom line: he's a basketball player on a football field.

I still believe that can make him an effective red zone receiving TE. I've seen enough evidence of that in scrimmages and that role fits his skill set.

I don't think 230 is too light to play TE especially if you are more of a pass catching TE. I agree with BB in his instincts do not seem to be there, he has had some bad drops also. He is no doubt a good athlete but has not been a football player, yet. I am still hopeful that he can help the team.

I also am not writing him off just yet. I think he has a role in the passing game. I think he is better served playing inside too.

He could be an asset in the passing game, try to get some favorable matchups for him. Thats what the coaches get paid to do, so we'll see I guess.

Embree's not going to give guys a 5th year if they're not going to help us win.

I was kind of hoping that my post above would bait one of you into doing the math for me. We got more commits already it seems than scholarships to give. Don't we have like 8 seniors on Scholarship?

I don't see that we had much attrition from Spring to Fall. Kids can transfer in August and not lose another year (ala Connor Wood did). Mark my words, there will be a thinning out process in the next 3 weeks.... Who's in? Not just 4th year guys, but guys who've not done the work, or not cutting it in general, guys who see the writing on the wall. This is no time to make friends. Embo needs schollies. I'm actually shocked that DaVaughn survived this.

Just listened to Embree's interview from today and he basically states that he told Nate Bonsu that he's a 4th year guy and unless he becomes a major contributor, the 4th year will be it.

I've been surmising until now that this was the theory. "step up now, or thanks for coming and hope you got a lot of juice boxes while you were here for 4 years".

Buffnik - I think we can pretty much call that an Embree rule now. Instead of a 5th year, you get a case of Horizon Dairy Chocolate Milk boxes?
