The clock 'froze' and no on catches it, and the German fencer is allowed to score a few quick points and win a match she should have lost. How is that right? Lovely Olympic spirit these days. German should have forfeited.

Clock didn't freeze. Everything was within the time. The problem is that a) the time is kept manually and not electronically and b) only full seconds are shown.

After double hit 1 1.9 secs were left, 1.2 after double hit 2 and her decisive hit was within the time also. To quote both fencers "it was a technicality and not an athlete's thing".
