It appears that we will/can spend big money on a coach, It appears that we have a real commitment to facilities that we may even put into a coaches contract, we seem to finally have a general understand from the Admin as to what kind of support and financial backing the football program will require, and we did not up Embo for a 3rd year of No Clue National Joke football. we will get somebody and it should still be a BIG upgrade.

I wanted Butch Jones, but I did not know much about him 2 weeks ago. We can still make a very good hire.

BTW, I have been a HARSH critc of our Admin....but it looks as though they are finally on board with a winning program.

Who else is out there to throw big money at? Keep in mind, our version of big money isn't enough big money to actually land most of the big fish out there.

I do agree with you. I am optimistic we will get someone good and as you say there is no way whomever we hire won't be way better than Water Bottle.

However I did just read this post from yesterday which lays out why it is going to be difficult to recruit a talented coach to CU right now:

    http://www.rantsports.com/ncaa-foot...re-being-left-behind-in-search-for-new-coach/

Not good. But again onward and upward. Go Buffs. Pulling for Bohn to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

After this very public fiasco, I think we are all going to be in the dark until they call a press conference for the new hire. We essentially dropped trow in public, people took pictures, posted them on the internet, talked about it for a few days and essentially, it wasn't big enough. Bohn and his crew might want to keep it zipped up for a bit.

I agree. But the HC is really the most important piece. See Tad Boyle. If we would have gone with Dunlap or McClain, there's no way we are as successful in MBB right now imo. And that is with the Practice facility

Just wanted to make sure everyone is aware that Solich is calling the shots right now. The future of the program is in the hands of a guy who thought that Mac should have been our coach two years ago (he was senile then, too). I kind of think this is relevant to our current situation. I have big, big concerns. Carry on.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt because he didn't want Embo. I'll admit I wanted Mac two years ago two because our selected candidate pool was so damn awful. At least we have a guy willing to throw up money at the program, so I'm not complaining at all...

Oklahoma State has been doing fine with Pickens and I'm sure Auburn has someone like that. Apple's Tim Cook is an Auburn grad.

Did Pickens pick Gundy? What do you know about Solich to make you confident in his wisdom? I just told you that Mac was the same raving lunatic two years ago in interviewing for the position - to the point that the entire selection committee (save Solich) all foresaw the potential disaster - but Solich still wanted him. Solich may have money, but bigbang might as well be selecting our next coach, which is kind of a critical decision.

Um, I have a connection to Solich. He is not calling the shots nor is Bohn letting him. Do you seriously think Bohn is going to let someone else "hire" the next coach after what he went through with Embree? Bohn's job is on the line. This is ALL him now. Solich is there to show the commitment by the donors to the funding of the new facilities. That is all.

And there were a lot of people who wanted Coach Mac brought in - in fact, we were given t-shirts at a watch party at Blake Street Tavern by the Young Alum group that had "Bring Back Mac" printed on them. I made my hubby throw his out last week (he used to wear it under stuff and to the gym).

I agree, although I don't know Solich at all. I get the impression that he just wants to Buffs to win really bad like the rest of us and wants the Administration to be accountable for it if he is to make the major financial committments.

Hey, coach selection is a crap shoot! Ask UM about RichRod, ASU about Erickson (Check out Erickson's resume on Wiki! Fer cripe's sake how could ASU go wrong?) OU about Blake and others, "Bama about a whole bunch of guys incl. Mike Price!

HC is the Peter Principle in action. Look at Mac, he did well in that time and under those circumstances, after stumbling out of the blocks. Now? Who knows?

Take the best guy with a bit of HC experience and a DC background as well as a personality/ego that allows him to hire people who are better/smarter than himself, as assistants. MacIntyre or DeRuyter either one have good points.

Oh, and yeah, get LUCKY AS ALL GETOUT!!!

With all due respect, selecting a coach is not a crap shoot.

When something random occurs in nature, according to information theory, it is an indication that the observer lacks information. Effects have causes even if they aren't easily discerned. Failure or success on the football field has causes too.....

Nor does selecting a coach need to be a random process, as much as Bohn has pursued his "random walk" (of shame). It is complicated however and there is a lot that goes into it: personality, vision, management skills, teaching skills, football acumen, gameday strategy etc.

I like your byline. At least you are ready to admit what you don't know and that in fact you might be wrong. If only we could all start at that point. (this is your cue people to start chanting "hire Petrino")

So then who do you want MB to go after? Oops, sorry I missed last sentence. I would like it.....although he really does seem reckless and maybe much easier to recruit against after what he did to the Falcons and Arky.

Do you really think MB would take the risk?

BTW, if going that route, why Petrino over Tressell?

    Thx

    Try to pay attention stl/dog.

Aeroxx is recommending the candidate that demonstrates the appropriate personality, the proper vision, complimentary management skills, uncanny football acumen, and a gameday strategy apprpropriate for the unique CU environment. It is NOT a crapshoot!

With all due respect, it remains a "crap shoot" in the sense that random variables still remain affecting the desired outcome(a successful coach, who stays long-term) even after you have gathered as much information as you can. Just how many head coachs have been replaced in the past ten years? And those who were replaced were certainly successful at some lower level and subject to much scrutiny.

Dennis Erickson and Rich Rodriguez are both prime examples: would you have surmised either would fail (mediocre records, short term stays) at ASU or UM respectively, based upon their known histories? Both indicate there are factors at work that cannot be measured, or even if measured, cannot be wholly relied upon to guarantee a successful outcome.

Petrino? Meh! Always looking for the next gig; the kind of guy who, upon being introduced, shakes hands while looking over your shoulder at ..........................that hot blonde in the corner!

Agree -- especially with the bolded part. I think that's one of the best qualities a college HC can have, since there is so much time spent on other distractions. I think that's played a huge part in Brady Hoke's success so far at Michigan -- at least in turning around an awful defense; the OC, I believe, is an idiot.

As much as I like to beat up on Aeroxx, he's right to a point (in this rare case).

Successful organizations don't pursue leaders simply because they have great track records. Instead, they're diligent about determining the unique requirements of that organization (and job), and then developing an interview process that isolates those qualities in candidates.

However, the college football environment is somewhat unique, and the required skillsets are probably a little more universal then most corporate environments. Finding what makes the CU job unique might be an exercise in futility, because it may be difficult to isolate those key variables in Boulder. Instead, it's probably prudent to simply attract the guy who has a recognizable name in the right footprint, and has demonstrated sufficient gameday ability to win in adverse conditions.

Pretty speculative claim. Who would McClain or Dunlap have hired as assistants? Would Roberson have come?

Just what qualities does Boyle have that either of the others lack? If you could identify them, you could package them and make a fortune.

I have no doubt there is a "crap shoot" element, especially for the candidates that are interested in CU now. You give solid examples.

A crap shoot is far better odds than a 3rd Embo year.

Who would you bet on at this point?

This is far and away the smartest thing you have ever written on this board. It's actually something I hope people keep in mind, regardless of who we end up hiring. The roll of the dice we're taking with a new coach has better odds associated with it than a 3rd year of Embo.

What about someone like Paul Rhoads? If you can be .500 at Iowa St, you can do anything.

    This...sad to say.

It would be really hard for any halfway decent guy with previous head coaching experience (bringing in competent coordinators) not to be a significant upgrade for us.

I've wondered why he hasn't been mentioned much too. He's an ISU alum, so maybe he won't leave, but he's definitely worth looking into.

Clemson OC Chad Morris would be ideal. He runs the hurry up no huddle spread and can recruit Texas. Every Clemson fan contributes their success to The Chad and would much rather have him be their HC instead of Dabo Swinney. It might be hard to convince him to come here and coach up spruce, mcculloch, and p-rich when he has been calling plays for Sammy watkins, Nuk Hopkins, and Andre Ellington.

while hiring the "right guy" increases odds of sucess...you are right a little luck always helps...recruiting etc
ive hired people in the business world for 30 years now... its batting average overall. Some of the people i thought were "cant miss" on hiring day failed..and others i took somewhat of a flyer on turned out to be some of the best hires i made. mike does need a good hire this time but anything will be better than embree

You do know that word is Clemson is looking at hiring Stitt to be their new OC? So in that case, we might as well make Stitt our HC. Sorry, pass.
