Similar to what I did with Webb (and Sefo) over the summer, I condensed all of Sefo's plays against CSU into a simple 7 minutes to get a real look at how he played.

My personal analysis on each play in Spoiler (feel free to ignore or just search for a specific play by using the timestamp to reference it):
    (uninteresting plays in spoilers)

(simple) = Behind the line of scrimmage or close enough.

Play 1 (0:00): Bad throw. Maybe rust but Sefo's throwing motion sometimes looks like it wants the ball to hit the turf.
    Play 2 (0:06) Good throw.

Play 3 (0:12) (simple) Good throw.
Play 4 (0:20) This play just looks poor and Sefo somehow fools the defender with the fakest pump fake ever to make it a solid play.

Play 5 (0:28) Josh Dobbs makes an appearance.

Play 6 (0:32) (simple) Good throw. Good play call executed to perfection.
Play 7 (0:41) Bad throw. Most will say this was a bad pass and great play by Ross, I'd probably agree. The thing that makes me wonder is to me it kind of looks like he intentionally underthrew him to play it safe with the defender about 5-10 yards to the right of Ross but I'll lean towards bad throw since that's unlikely and it wasn't easy to keep inbounds anyways.

Play 8 (0:51) I guess Sefo forgot how to slide in a matter of hours?
Play 9 (0:57) (simple) Good throw. Devin Ross is good.
Play 10 (1:09) Great throw. Excellent block, did require a very slight adjustment which might've prevented 6, personally disagree with Fields decision to cut back but great play by him anyways.
Play 11 (1:21) Poor blocking, don't really like this play call.

Play 12 (1:29) OL fault. Let a guy straight through, Sefo just gets rid of it.

Play 13 (1:35) 3rd and 8 and you call that? And you were doing so well, Brian.
Play 14 (1:44) (simple) Good throw. I don't really like this play even if it worked.
Play 15 (1:52) Bad throw. Sefo's reaction sums it up.
    Play 16 (1:58) Holding call.
Play 17 (2:05) Not sure Sefo made the right option choice but a poor block likely prevented a respectable gain.
Play 18 (2:13) (simple) Good throw.

Play 19 (2:27) (simple) Good throw.
    Play 20 (2:37) Sacked. Frazier/OL fault.
Play 21 (2:44) (simple) Good throw.

    Play 22: (2:51) Good throw.

Play 23: (3:05) (simple) Good throw. Not really a good throw but it worked fine so I won't use it against him.
Play 24: (3:12) Good throw. Bobo has to catch that, but he redeems himself quickly.

Play 25: (3:20) Mediocre(?) throw. Ross makes an impressive catch.

Play 26: (3:27) Great throw. Okay, amazing catch, but no one gives Sefo credit on this play. He recognizes the offsides and launches a beautiful deep pass on the mark away from the corner and it's soft enough that Bobo can corral it in with one hand.
Play 27 (3:43) Bad throw. What I really wonder is why Sefo ran away from blockers and into the rush. Think Bobo could've caught that but it wasn't easy.

    Play 28 (4:01) Good throw.

Play 29 (4:05) (simple) Good Throw. Ross drops it.

Play 30 (4:14) (simple) Good Throw. Nice play by Lindsay.

Play 31 (4:23) Good throw. Solid 3rd down conversion. Think we could've got more though.

Play 32 (4:32) Good throw. Good blocking, good patience, decent gain.

Play 33 (4:43) Great effort by Sefo gets the first down.

Play 34 (4:50) (simple) Good Throw.

    Play 35 (4:58) Another run.

Play 36 (5:08) Throws it away. Nothing there, not great blocking.

Play 37 (5:15) Good throw. I guess. I'm kind of bored at this point.
Play 38 (5:28) Bad throw. I think that weird jump back caused by the rush getting through causes him to misjudge this one. Great acting though, should've gotten a flag and an Oscar.

Play 39 (5:39) Bobo's open this whole play for a decent gain, but not exactly great blocking and he never gets a good look at Bobo. Throws it away. Rams commit dumb penalty at the cost of Sefo taking a big hit.

Play 40 (5:53) OL fault. Blitz gets free run to Sefo even with the flag, leaving him to miss that there's a wide open receiver for the first down, and throws an ugly ball (could've been a better throw even in the circumstances) which the DB luckily wasn't paying attention to and causes a PI. OL also committed a penalty causing them to offset.

Play 41 (6:00) Great run at the cost of another hit on Sefo.

Play 42 (6:09) Okay, WTF is up with Fields on this play? From what I can tell he just costs us a touchdown by not even bothering to block and watches as the guy he is supposed to be blocking prevents Sefo from scoring. Maybe I'm missing something.

Play 43 (6:20) Good throw. Sefo hits Bobo well and then Bobo gets some extra yardage with a nice play.

Play 44 (6:34) I don't know, I can't call this a bad throw but hit him in stride and it's a touchdown so...

Play 45 (6:42) Great play by Sefo turns into disaster.
By my (very rough) tally, he had 2 great throws, 8 good throws, 11 "good" throws near or behind the line of scrimmage, and 5 bad throws, and 3 others were questionable.

To his credit, I thought his footwork improved and he made the plays necessary given the system he worked with and none of his bad throws were really a threat to go in the wrong hands. Feel free to give your thoughts or come to your own conclusions.

You the man. He really was good for a terrible throw every quarter or so on a short pass.

    Nicely done!
Guess you could do the same for every college QB on any given Saturday, with about the same general result, though = some good, some bad, other players make you look better than you played it that time. That's why they play the game. It ain't Madden if its live. In the end, its SCOREBOARD!

All the little boys here need to understand that, right Duff?

Excellent work, Jeric. Way too many QB draws being called. He will not last the entire season under those conditions.

More drops than I recalled watching it live. I also didn't see a noticeable drop off in accuracy throwing to his left.

Not sure I like Sefo on the designed QB runs. Think the option is much more effective for his running style.

Either way, only a few poor throws and only a couple boneheaded plays. A nice baseline to start the season.

Also, I saw a late hit out of bounds on Sefo and a very late tackle follow through out of bounds on Devin Ross.

**** that Matt Stephens guy and "CSU lost with class". They are a bunch of bitches that got their ass kicked.

He's too slow for them too, it's fine as some sort of brute force 3rd and 2 tactic every once and a while but it was so overused. Why not use Awini for these situations most of the time? I get it'd be pretty obvious but it worked fine for Tyrone Swoopes last night. Awini has the build and athleticism to make those plays and it also doesn't put our QB1 at risk so much.

I'm trying to consider if the coaches are planning to use the threat of the QB draw as a tactic to enable some other play down the road. Not coming up with what that could allow. Maybe shallow crossing routes behind the LBs who cheat on the fake? Shallow crosses haven't been one of Liufau's strengths. Ideas?

@Jeric thanks, you take your football seriously.

    My general impression is positive.
    - while he had some bounced throws that need to be eliminated in the future, those are safe passes. I would much rather see those mistakes low than high. I high mistake is an INT waiting to happen, the bounce allows us to make another play.
    - With the exception of one deep pass, he was pretty spot on. That's a good sign.
    - The vast majority of swing passes/ short passes were placed where the receiver could continue to run, he didn't stop them in their tracks to get the ball. How many of those passes behind the LOS resulted in a loss? Not many if at all. That didn't happen last year.
    - I thought his decision making was very good. Only one bad head-work move that I recall seeing (passing wise). He threw away the ball when he should have.
    - Running was positive, but the coaches need to reduce the number of QB designed runs. I do like his toughness, but he needs to slide more (bad head-work to take a shot like he did in the 4Q).

I think Friday was a good performance, one to build on. Looking forward to seeing this Sefo or better through the rest of the season. Please don't regress!

My biggest complaint about Sefo's performance was on the short passing. He's got to be more accurate on those short passes. In this offense, those are designed to be easy completions that serve the same purpose as a run play. Can't be putting those throws at someone's shoe laces or sailing them or off target. These are rhythm plays and they have to be completed while giving the WR an opportunity to turn them into something. The offense depends on these.

Very true, and the reason it is a good thing to let Sefo get maybe a few more reps than you might otherwise expect against ISU. Gotta get that rhythm and timing down early.

One of those hits out of bounds did get called for RtP. There was another play I wish someone could find where a CSU Dlineman made a diving spear at Sefo after the play...caused Sefo to have some heated words with him.

    Thanks Jeric!

Definitely some room for improvement. As noted above, way too many runs, hopefully that is adjusted downward. I cringed when he tried to leave his feet.

On throwing, if he can just avoid the stupid interceptions, I will take several bad throws a game.

CSU got way to many pressures; especially as the game progressed. This with a undersized, underexperienced dline that should have been way way overmatched.

Against UofM all of those pressures become viscous sacks. Sefo has about half the time to decide and throw. The dbs he's throwing against are not recently converted WRs.

We need our oline to really gel over the next two weeks.

I feel like a lot of those pressures in the second half were due to the offense being so conservative and trying to milk clock. O line played pretty well compared to last year.

Also a lot of slipped tackles that probably won't happen against Michigan. It's going to be a lot harder to run the ball, so those short throws will be all that more important.

    I just re-watched the 1st half entirely.

What language does Mack Brown speak in? Sometimes it's English, sometimes, I think he just makes up words.

image.jpeg Jeric's YouTube and analysis was inspirational for me to do a little further breakdown.
Most passes are initiated from shotgun that are quick releases from one of the hashmarks.
His deep routes are more often launched from the right hash to the left sideline.
Most of his passes from the left hash are outlets to targets at or behind the LoS to the opposite hash that rely on YAC.
He is not targeting throws inside the hash marks.
Intermediate and long passes are mostly avoided in the center and right side of the field.
When he flushes right, he's likely to bail out by throwing out of bounds.

Overall, not a bad outing at all for Sefo. If he can put up that kind of effort all season, CU will go bowling. But, he had no pressure. No pressure to put up points to win, no pressure while throwing. I think it will change when he hits P12 play...I hope not, but that was a weak, and by weak, I mean little sister weak, defense.

And yes, Mack Brown sounds like English is his second language. Either that or he has had a serious head injury.
