because the Cal game was a very winnable game.

Before the program can turn around the team has to start "smelling the blood in water" and put the game away.

I do feel the team left it all on the field but did not make the plays to win.

    The Good

    • The oline blocked so much better on passing plays than last week it was really encouraging.
    • Paul Richardson - worth the price of admission by himself. A truly electric player.
    • Hansen played well.
    • FG kicker performed under pressure.
    • Rippy was good on Defense.
    • Stewart was very good on the screens and delay passes out of the back field.
    • No turnovers.

    The bad -
    • Total lack of a running game.
    • Defense could not come up with the big stop when the game was on the line. Let Cal march down the field when we were ahead 27-23. Way too easy.
    • Poor tackling technique...too many arm tackles.
    • Mental breakdowns at key times - kicking the ball out of bounds for example.
    • Special teams need to come up with more big plays - never pinned Cal deep that I remembered.

    The Ugly -
    • Penalties - a team cannot keep putting itself in a hole constantly and expect to win especially when you do not have overwhelming talent.
    • Defense gives up too many big plays.

    Comments -
    • The effort was good and I plan on being patient but I do not believe in moral victories. This was a winnable game that was lost. CU is not going to see a lot of those coming up.
    • Other WRs have to start contributing.
    • I did not like the play calling in the red zone (this is my opinion) - CU has some tall receivers and I would of like to see Clemons and McCullough on the field with PRich in the Red Zone. Thornton should also be a threat down there. Team settles for 3 too often.

Gotta be patient. Gonna be a long year, but the future looks bright!

Defense wasn't bad. They were just on the field way too long. Especially at the end of the game and especially because of penalties (routing the kicker penalty was HUGE,) the d line couldn't muster the same energy they had before, and then the weakness in the secondary showed. I loved the long touchdown near the end but it didn't give the d time to rest. I think that was the biggest reason they came back, not lack of taken or character

if we can avoid too many more injuries, and if the team can eliminate the mistakes, it can compete with nearly anyone on the schedule. i don't expect to see a ton of wins, but i do think we can be competitive. fingers crossed.

Not sure about that - we won time of possession by a pretty wide margin, including in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Well, it was something I noticed during the game, but looking at the stats, the time of possession is somewhat deceiving. The Buffs had the ball the first drive, but then Cal had 26 plays plus two extended series because of penalties, while the buffs had only 16 between their first possession and last one.

What I take away from it is this. The only way our defense can look good is to send pressure from the linebackers and Dline almost every play to make up for a weak secondary. When they are on the field for too many plays our Dline just gets worn down and the secondary eventually is set up to get exploited.

I have a hard time being disappointed by a two-play touchdown drive, but it definitely didn't help the defense get any rest before they had to come back.

The reason Cal had so many plays is the defense did not stop them....Just do not buy that excuse...CU scored too fast and it hurt the defense...come on...The defense should of been fired up and go a stop.

Heartbroken, still recovering, that game was there for the taken. Bad technique displayed by Parkers Orms on that touchdown by Cal to end the game. Our cornerbacks play is a major weak point for the buffs, we need bluechippers at that position badly. Orms technique was so bad it was also pass interference. All he had to do was look for the ball and then jump to disrupt the pass. But there were a lot of good things in the game, the play calling was top notch, the team is getting better. I just hope the Cal loss doesn't destroy there confidence.

PRich is amazing to watch. CU should be able to capitalize on him to open up many other plays.
    Rippy was everywhere against Cal.
Hansen had great numbers in the game, and should take a ton of confidence into the next game, but I can't help but think he should have been better. He missed a wide open TD in the 1st. Overthrew several other players, and failed to gain a 1st down on a scramble simply because he slid early.

The big thing with this team is penalties. I don't know what the solution is, but we don't have near enough talent to overcome the constant mistakes. Polk with another PF late hit. More critical false starts and holding calls.
