Fly Over

I was in a porta potty pissing and almost ended up ****ting as well. They sounded really low and I'm mad I missed it.

Dunno, but they were definitely F-18s. Very low, too. I hope nobody gets in trouble for the low flyover. It was awesome!

Maverick: Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby.
Air Boss Johnson: That's a negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.
Goose: What tower, Mav?
Maverick: Gamow.
Goose: YeeeeHaw!

A couple Navy pilots got permanently grounded for a low flyover at Ga Tech last year. Hopefully this does not happen again. The guys yesterday were damn low.

I read about that. Apparently the rule is 1000 feet or higher. Those guts chose 1000 feet altimeter set at sea level (600 feet above the GT stadium roughly) instead of 1000 AGL. Kind of a harsh decision imho since each guy cost over $1mil to train. That flyover prolly was 1000 AGL for those guys.

I think direct flyover the stadium is a no no now because of the what if factor. Prolly kill a lot of people if a bobo occurred on just before the event horizon.

This A10 flyover at Aggieland looks every bit as low as those at GT and CU, if not lower.

That was 2006. And it was AF versus USN. I think both branches are more conscious these days of the risks of mishaps. Prolly why the guys doing our flyover didn't even pass over the stadium.

The review board in the GT incident cleared the pilots but the admiral overrode the review boards findings. Oh well.

Just saw the video and it looked well within the rules. The key is to come in slow then go to afterburner about 10 sec before the stadium. Several guys have had their wings pulled in recent years for low fly-bys...taking all the fun out of being a fighter

He came in from over Longmont, and just as they kicked into afterburner, some jack-ass in a Cessna fromt he Longmont airport who hadn't radioed in flew in front of them and they had to break off and regroup.

Just curious but who was the jackass in the Cessna supposed to be talking to? Longmont is an uncontrolled class G airport with no tower. Do the flyovers use the Boulder and Longmont CTAFs?

Good point Timbuff...cessna doesn't need to talk to anyone but the fly-over should have been in the NOTAMS. Who reads that stuff anyway. I like to go by the "little airplane, big sky" rule.

I think the guys said it should have been Denver or Jeffco? I don't know, I'm just a submariner who only knows how to communicate through "pings."

Can you imagine being that Cessna pilot, looking up and seeing three fighter jets screaming at you. :scared2:

At those kinds of closure speeds I doubt he would have even seen them. Prolly sh!t his pants when he was startled by the thrust noise after they passed him by.

Do you know if Rocky Flats is still restricted air space? Sitting on the front porch Friday and we see a small plane flying north receive a rendezvous from an F-16 who intercepted, escorted then pealed back to Buckley. Really cool and a bit scary.

this is turning into the flyover thread. thanks for the clips guys.

Looks like Rocky Flats is pretty close to Jeffco's Class D controlled airspace (I'm not totally sure of the spatial relation between the two) but I don't see anything on the Denver TAC on skyvector.com in that area that specifically covers Rocky Flats...

There's another classic fly over from an Angels game in '06-'07 where the pilots got grounded for a while after that one too. In fact, my buddy referenced that one when I asked how low he would be coming in - having trouble finding it in youtube anymore.

I'll add this one in to complement Miami's videos.

Thats nutts. He's lucky he didn't suck up any brush or rocks.

I tried to find the Bud Holland video from the Yakima Range where he cleared a ridge by less than 30 feet but no love. Bud Holland was the pilot who caused the CZAR 52 crash at Fairchild AFB.

Nope Rocky Flats is all closed down. Legally, you could land there as long as you don't hurt anyone or hit anything. Might get a trespassing ticket but the FAA won't say anything about it.

A video for those that want to see what it looks like from inside the jet (over the desert east of Fallon, NV).
