BYU may have just screwed themselves.

it's a dumb move on their part. they are trying to pretend they matter because they beat Oklahoma....and the non-believers at Utah went for the money.

Wow. That is an impressive move by Thompson, I never thought he'd pull it off, I was wrong. Hats off.

No way BYU leaves at this point. That would be a disaster.

My guess is BYU gets pulled back into the fold now.

Why? How does this impact their status as independent?

If true, with Fresno joining and Boise, if BYU stays does that spell BCS in 2011?

It never went official. The LDS church was going to vote on it leaving tomorrow.

The WAC is dead is my guess and BYU will have no conference to affiliate its other programs with. That was the plan all along.

I think the conference would remain in the exact same position it was in after losing Utah. Provisional status would be attainable, but only if BYU remains.

Good for Fresno. I'm guessing Nevada will be the next school to come along.

I'm guessing the MWC will make concessions for BYU to keep them in the fold.

MWC needs to get a ESPN deal.. Even if its a weeknight game it needs the exposure.

If both Fresno and Nevada make the move to the Mountain West, BYU basically has to stay in the Mountain West...the WAC will crumble apart as it'll be down to just 6 teams if I read this right (Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, and Utah State)...a 6 team conference can't be sustainable (and would the NCAA even allow that?)....

That link has just been updated to state that Nevada is leaning toward accepting the invitation as well.

No. The NCAA requires 8 teams. My guess is Montana makes the jump and then ????? your guess is as good as mine.

Yup, the MWC will have to give BYU a bigger piece of the pie in order to keep them around. Although this Fresno move now leaves BYU in a tough sport for their non-football sports team if the WAC is no longer a viable option.

The NCAA requires 6 members for a conference, so the WAC could technically survive. But don't expect Louisiana Tech to stick around, they would probably just join the Sun Belt to save travel costs.

Actually I feel really bad for Hawai'i in all of this. They certainly have a solid program, great fans, solid recruiting, but just can't overcome the logistical challenges. Sucks for them.

The Rammies are saved. The conference is not better, but it will still exist. It is a victory when you fight to see another day.

And boy did this blow up in BYU's face. They should go crawling back to the MWC with their mormon tails and mormom egos lodged firmly between their mormon legs...

The MWC and WAC should just merge again. I mean what is the difference between the two of them anyway?
