Future of the Rose Bowl game

I haven't seen this topic brought up on the board. The playoff format is starting next season of course and the Rose Bowl will get one of the semifinal games every 3 years, which means that there will be no true Rose Bowl game in those years featuring the traditional Big 10 champ against the Pac-12 champ.

Also, in the years where the Rose Bowl is not hosting a semifinal game there's a good chance that one or both of the Big 10/Pac-12 champs will be in the playoff, which means that the Rose Bowl will be diminished getting the runner-up teams from each conference. Yes, that can happen now and has happened recently with Oregon going to the national championship game a few years ago, and this year even if Ohio State had won the Big 10 MSU would still be here because OSU would be playing in the MNC game. But with 4 teams going to the playoff that obviously means there's a greater chance that one or both of the B10/P12 champs will be going to the playoff and not the Rose Bowl.

Let's just hope that when the time comes that CU wins the Pac-12 that it's not a year when the Rose Bowl is one of the 2 semifinal games. Unless we're in the playoff, of course.

I wonder if they will find a way within the system that if one of the semi-final games involves PAC vs. B1G that the game would end up in the rose bowl.

The Rose Bowl lost it's guaranteed Big10 Pac 12 matchup when the BCS format came along. It's unfortunate but nothing new. Texas won the national title after beating USC in te Rose Bowl, and TCU was playing in the game a couple years ago.

What year did they make the switch so that the BCS championship was the one-week-later game, so all four of the BCS bowls (Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and Rose) could still be played?
