SONOMA, Calif. — The University of Colorado men’s golf team had a very consistent day and ended strong as the Buffaloes are tied for sixth place in the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, the first two rounds of which were completed here Monday.
Host and No. 4-ranked California used six rounds in the 60s to build what appears to be an insurmountable lead, as the Bears own a team score 541, or some 35-under par. That’s good for a 21-stroke lead over both No. 21 Arizona State and No. 55 Oregon, both of whom are in at 14-under 562.
Colorado, ranked No. 94 at present, was tied for eighth after the morning round, as the Buffs turned in a team score of 288, or even-par; that was still 20 strokes behind Cal, which blistered the course with a 20-under 268 before recording a 15-under 273 in the afternoon; the Buffs turned in a 6-under 282 team score the second time around the 7,103-yard, par-72 Sonoma Golf Club course track, what amounted to be the fifth best second round score.
