I think DU should resurrect their football program.
anything to get out of the Sun Belt in basketball, would be a good move for DU. terrible fit...what does DU have in common with Louisiana-Monroe? Though, if I were the Pioneers, not sure the West Coast Conference with St. Mary's and Gonzaga might not be a better fit....then, not having football isn't a drawback on your resume. and, smaller, private (mostly religious) schools.
I honestly think DU is angling to bring back their football program at some point. They've been making a lot of noise about moving up in division to D-1 (done), and moving up in conference affiliation (in the works, supposedly). I think DU alumni are constantly pissed that they get no love when football season rolls around and want some of that attention.
I was actually thinking it was CSU.
I hope DU DOESN'T bring back football but would be fine with basketball. I don't think it would be good for CU. Its hard enough to get people to the games as it is without having yet another sports team to compete with
BUT they do get plenty of attention when hockey season rolls around.
DU would have so much work to do before they could bring back football. First of all, where would they play? There's no room on campus for a stadium. Their support for basketball right now is so bad, they'd need to seriously get the alums on board before spending the money on football. Since I think they have a bigger out-of-state enrollment than CU, I don't see where the support would come from. Hockey is one thing but I don't see much else that provides much DU school spirit.
I know a ton of DU grad school alums and not one of them feels connected to their school. CU grad school alums seem to have more Buff pride than any of my DU alum friends have Pio Pride.
Good for DU, but football is a long way off for them.
As for adding UTSA and TSU, those are GREAT moves for the WAC. I think those two teams will be like USF and UCF in 20 years -- second-level schools in a big football state that have huge student attendance (academically) and a lot of access to quality talent that doesn't end up in the conference that dominates the area (SEC/Big 12). That will pay off for them.
Exactly. Texas State could be a future gold mine. Big enrollment, low academic standards, only 30 miles south of Austin so its in a recruiting hotbed and an AD that supports its sports. They just spent a bunch of money on a new fieldhouse and the AD was on the news stating they are trying to follow the UT model and want to be the "Joneses" of their league- Will be like a UCF/USF
Either Texas school should hit it big in the WAC like BSU did. I have an eye on the program in SA...they will play at the Alamo Dome until an on campus stadium is built but I think that is a WIN...go to an UTSA football game and then go on the Riverwalk to eat after the game. I'm not as sold on Texas State but still a solid choice.
Where did DU used to play its football games? And is that field still around?
Thanks in advance.
Good for DU, though the WCC would be even better.
First things first, they need a new school name. UTSA is just not going to cut it. I say adopt San Antonio State.
Used to be on campus just west of the Arena, long gone.
There is space for a small football facility on the other side of I-25 if they wanted to do it. No more than 20,000 seats, max, though, unless they can buy up some property.
Here's the thing, though - light rail stops right there. Parking wouldn't be too much of an issue. It *could* be done. Whether they go that route or not remains to be seen. It's all pure speculation on my part, but I think they want a piece of that football pie. They see what it can do.
There is no way in hell that the Wash Park neighborhood is going to let DU build a football stadium there.
Isn't that land you're referring to part of South High School? You're talking about the area right near All-City Stadium, right?
I think he is. I suppose they could just play at All City to start.
don't see why UTSA and Texas State are preferable to North Texas. These days, Denton is just 25 miles of "interstate culture" from being Dallas. bigger market.
UNT is shooting for the MWC not WAC. Lateral move at best.
didn't know that (MWC, UNT).
Texas State is in the same situation as UNT, but just "interstate culture" from both Austin AND San Antonio.
Didn't Texas State get the death penalty and then recruit Sinbad, Kathy Ireland and the Quantum Leap guy?
"Unnecessary Roughness" movie so dumb, it was funny.
Scott Bakula to Featherstone was a great pitch/catch duo.
I was amazed watching that movie how bad Kathy Ireland was at acting. Hot, definitely. But an actress? LOL.
I think the only NC who didn't play a bowl game... and that is UCLA's only NC.
The Pioneers should just play in Invesco for the first several years until they get the program underway and figure out where to build a small stadium.
She was also a very good actress in the one with Emilio Estevez, Sam Jackson and Captain Kirk. Can't remember the name of the movie, but she was like the head of the Wilderness Girls or something.
Separate names with a comma.
