so, he wasn't asked to do much throwing the ball and the playbook was basically not available. but, i noticed a few things...

he has a live arm, obviously, and he can throw on the run. i read somewhere on the boards that he reminded folks of ochs in terms of physical ability and i think that is a pretty good analogy (altho i hope hansen is much less concussion prone).

that touchdown pass he threw really was a thing of beauty. did you see him look off the defender, pump, and then throw? that showed a lot of maturity for a true frosh. and the throw was perfect.

on the negative side, he tried to force a few passes into receivers where he had absolutely no business trying to pass. the INT was a perfect example of a pass you don't throw. but, i also noticed that he often put the ball where you are supposed to put it (away from the defender) so he is pretty fundamentally sound. he needs to learn that he cannot force passes--- bad things will happen in this league.

finally (and i don't know if this was because of the limited playbook they gave him), i would like to see him scramble and then hit the downfield receiver, rather than always tucking and running. he is such a running threat that defenders will come up to stop him on scrambles and there will be guys open down the field.

all in all, i like his speed, his arm, and his size. but, if they can't run the full offense while he is on the field, his success this year will be limited. once kjsu realized that he was going to play zone-read all day, they were able to successfully adjust in the second half. the Buffs will need a bigger bag of tricks the rest of the way.

the kid has some game. fingers crossed!

On his INT he also locked into his receiver for forever. That's to be expected though, I got the feeling last night that he's supposed to take off and run it if his first option isn't there.

I'm sure he'll be getting a lot more reps in practice with other sections of the playbook. I'm excited.

I just added this vid to his profile from the recruiting class. It's a little old but it gives us a glimpse into what we are in for with Tyler Hansen.

I read this thread title and feared something terrible had happened to Hansen overnight...

I think Hansen is the guy with the tools we have all said this offense demands. What he is lacking at this point is experience. Looks like they plan to get him that in stages, which is great imo.

What I hope they will do this week is work in some variations for Hansen to run off of what Mizzou will see on this week's game tapes. Pull up on some of those zone read runs and throw. Maybe some actual option pitches to Speedy. Give Hansen a little more freedom to throw (I think some of the forced passes may have come from Hansen feeling like he had to make a throw in the limited chances he had to run a passing play.)

I also have to disagree with the calls for more Scott at this point, especially in combination with Hansen. 6 carries for 11 yards doesn't scream "underutilized weapon" to me, especially not in comparison to a guy who went for well over 100 yards... And with Hansen on the field, the fact that Stewart requires a defense to defend sideline to sideline while Scott has shown no tendency to do anything but run inside the tackles (tentatively, generally speaking) is going to lead the defense to stuff the gaps inside when Scott is in, cutting down on Hansen's ability to cut up inside when he keeps the ball, something they can't do with Speedy on the field... I love the message that playing Hansen sends to the team - the best players will get on the field, and if they produce they will get on the field more. At this point giving Scott more carries at the expense of Speedy goes completely counter to that message...

i tuned out your post and started getting a little fired up when you mentioned the option. they really ought to install a few option plays for mizzery. can you imagine a triple option with hansen, speedy, and scott? that could be downright dangerous.

I think it's a bit premature to label playing Darrell Scott as a contradiction of playing your best players....

I'm not saying he won't be. But if you think he has been to date, you haven't been paying attention...

Can't D Scott fake an season ending injury and get a medical redshirt. I know he hasn't played 30% of the snaps
