They had a clip of him saying...it is not about winning ball games it is about getting up in the morning and doing things right.

I guess I am dumbfounded. He seems to be implying that doing things right and winning are mutually exclusive so pick one or the other.

At the first recruiting luncheon when Hawkins was coach he went to great lengths to talk about how he was the winningest coach in Div 1 football and how he was here to win a national championship. I guess he was not doing things right then.

I want CU fans to hold the bar higher. Yes, I expect CU to do things right but I also believe there should be tangible results for doing things right.

Hawk is absolutely terrible at media relations.

My guess is that he was trying to say that he believes in being process oriented rather than goal oriented in order to attain success.

Even then, I would hope he recognizes that being process oriented may be the ideal but that it doesn't work for a lot of people (most people?). Most of the people I have known are motivated in simpler, more straightforward ways. They want "recognition" or "money" or "winning" and will work their asses off to attain their primary goal if you can tap into that. I actually think it's the rare person who is able to find fulfillment from doing things the right way and with faith that all the external trappings (money, fame, etc.) are an inevitable consequence of working your process and don't need to be worried about. If Dan's that way, then great. If he's expecting everyone on the team to be that way and can't relate to the guys who are goal oriented, it's a major problem.

Man that dude is clueless. He is a football coach and does not seem to grasp the point of playing football.

If this was about raising kids correctly we would have a bunch of Moms coaching football and teaching them life lessons. They would not cost a million bucks a year like Hawk.

It's never about winning. It's always about doing the little things. It's about getting your horns out and bringing your lunchpail. It's always about something else OTHER than winning. I can't wait until this jackass is unemployed.

he seems so detached from what the fans of the school want. we don't want to invest our time and energy into a team that doesn't even care if they win.

on that banner salary CU pays him? Isnt Talk, one of the lowest paid coaches in the big12? seems like we are getting value for money.

I wouldn't go so far as to say value, but the phrase "you get what you pay for" seems appropo here....

Hawkins got a substantial raise to come here from Boise. He makes over a million dollars a year. That's not cheap by almost any standard. I prefer to not try to compare him to coaches who have actually accomplished something - like a winning season.

Fair enough, but look at Turner Gill. 20-30 as a head coach 1 winning season in a sub-par league. Takes over for Mangino at more than 2x what hawk makes. Gene Chizik at ISU paid about what hawk gets won 2.5 games a year. Overall hawk is #10 in the big 12 over 800K behind number 9 and barely ahead of ISU and baylor...kind of like the program.

I saw and shook my head. I don't get mad anymore. I'm getting close to not caring, and that's saying a lot because I'm as hardcore as most any Buff fan out there. The guy is clueless, and after saying he was here to win the NC, to say that kind of crap (i.e. it's not about winning and losing) is self-serving and dishonest. The sooner the jackass leaves, the better.

I always hate this argument because it is a total red herring. He is paid to do a job, he accepted the money offered and he needs to do what he is paid to do which is to win football games (contrary to his position). Most professionals that want to move up in prestige and pay have to demonstrate their value through performance. If Hawkins was winning 9 games a year, CU would have to increase his pay in order to keep him. Do you think with his present performance he is desired by any Division 1 program? If you hire a new coach today at CU do you pay him $10 million a year and expect to win the conference because he is the highest paid. Of course not unless you are hiring an Urban Meyer type of guy. When coach Mac was here CU made him one of the highest paid coaches in the nation - after he had turned the program around.

Hawkins performance to date does not warrant a merit increase.

Since Urban, Mack et all make about half that I'd expect to get better than what they bring to the table. I have 15 people that work for me they all have differing compensation packages based on their ability to produce results, better people get paid more, so yeah based on the fact CU is hiring on the cheap we are getting what we pay for at this point.

Disagree. CU did not hire on the cheap. Five years ago Hawkins Pay was very competitive in the Big 12...his lack of performance is what has caused him to fall back. When Hawkins was hired Gary Pinkel was making less than Hawkins as was Mangino and Mike Gundy. All those people surpassed Hawkins by being successful on the football field.

Chris Peterson at Boise was only being paid $500,000 per season when he was hire, by being successful he has had his contract renegotiated twice and still makes about what Hawkins makes.

I have had 100s of employees and you let them know that you reward performance.

Hawkins low pay relative to the rest of the Big 12 is a direct result of his lack of performance not the other way around.

BNG is right - If Hawk were winning, he'd be getting paid a lot more.

Good Lord, I've got to say I agree with this NU fan 100%. Hawkins is totally out of touch with reality. I've never heard a football coach say "it's not about winning". WTF does he think he was hired for - to be a boy scout leader?

Thats actually a solid point i hadn't thought of, I do wonder what the salary landscape was when Hawk was hired.

As far as rewarding hawk for his performance? relative to the market I'd say we are doing that at the moment.

Some one needs to tell Hawk to watch Hot Shots.

"My uncle use to tell me that not playing to win is like sleeping with you sister. Sure she is a great piece of tail with a box full of goodies, but it's just illegal."

There are plenty of D-1 coaches that make far less than $1M a year that understand the importance of winning. When you make $100K a year, you can justify being good at one thing, like making sure your kids get up in the morning and do the right thing, when you get paid $1M a year, you need to do that and also recruit, coach and win (on average) more than 4 games a year. I don't love Hawk but I don't hate him either, lets just hope this is a year that makes turnaround headlines, something sustainable. My gut says...not happening.

OK, I've got to ask because, you know, I'm a "Hawk lover," but what exactly was the context of the question and his answer? Because I do not, for one second, believe he thinks losing is OK just as long as you are doing things right. I mean, wouldn't most of you agree that the most important thing in life is doing whatever you do with honor? You guys may be totally correct in asserting that he has no clue as a coach. But if Mac, yeah, I'm pulling the Mac card, had said, after turning the program around, that "I'm proud of our record, but what is more important is that we do it the right way," he would have been embraced. So, you guys aren't pissed at Hawkins so much for his remark as you are that he made the remark on the heels of 4 losing seasons.

I'm pissed that CU has NEVER had 4 losing seasons in a row up until last year. I'm pissed that I was a believer in what Coach Hawkins and Mr. Bohn were selling up until the 2009 CSU game, and felt duped.

I'm honestly not pissed by anything Coach Hawkins says. Deeds speak louder than words.

Watching helplessly as CU's football program has fallen into the B12 basement during a time when the fortunes of every other B12 school had been elevated really, really hurts. Irrelevance sucks. Not many people believe CU is ">thisclose<" except the man behind the Dal Ward curtain.

Once bit, twice shy. Beltway's infected calf muscle picture is a pretty good metaphore for 2010. There's a gaping wound that is going to take some time to heal.

It was not a question and answer. It was him talking at one of the whistle stops. But I do applaud your effort to redefine the context of something you obviously did not see or hear.
