I was told over the weekend that Hawkins did indeed meet with the CU higher ups while Bohn was in Hawaii securing the donations to fire him. Hawkins did convince Benson and DeStephadouce to keep him, while Bohn was trying to fire him. I know this is an old story, but thought it was worth reposting.

I was also told that Hawkins was recently out at Colorado National Golf Club bashing the support CU football has been getting. Saying things like if CU football received half the support that the golf team received they would be in much better shape.

I wonder who Benson and DiStefano will allow Bohn to hire for the men's hoops job.

If the football team had half the coaching that the golf team has they would be in much better shape.

Hawkin's problem is he keeps yelling "four" and that's where he ends up.

Exactly how does fan support improve incompetent coaching and lack of quality depth on the roster?

WOW. He is well on his way towards putting CU football on the level of the golf team. Did he seriously make this comment? 50,000 people do not pay $50+ six times a year to watch the golf team Hawk!

Are these rumors or is there something substantiated? If rumors, they're nasty. If real, the shotgun just blew off his foot.

With all due respect to the first post, I'd take them with a grain of salt. I'd like to believe tehy aren't true, but then again, with Hawk you never know the guy's mouth is nearly as big as his ego....

Hawkins is acting like a guy who knows that he is on thin ice but can't quite believe it and doesn't have a clue how to change it.

He used to run his mouth every off-season, usually saying something that came back looking like a dumb or unjustifiable statement, this year he has been notably absent from the media but still manages to say some things that cause people to wonder.

I actually like the guy in all aspects except as a coach, unfortunately he has failed miserably at CU in the winning department and hasn't shown anything that would indicate that he has any idea how to change it.

We will see a change this year one way or another, either he turns it around and wins some games or there will be a coaching change once the election is over. The total athletic program is dependant on football revenues and if the team isn't winning those will be down enough that a change will have to be made.

Regarding Hawkins comments- CU was having a reuinion/golf tourney & dinner prior to the spring game. My guess is several of the old players (from when CU was good) that were playing golf that day said something to Hawkins during the golf outing, causing Dan to get his panties in a bunch. I was at the golf course but left when the tourney got started. I was told Hawkins was sitting around later in the afternoon in a bad mood complaining about everything including the lack of support. My source even commented to me that he thought it was odd that Hawkins was so loud with his criticism and didn't seem to care who he was talking with, or who might overhear him complaining.

Regarding the meeting with Benson and DeStephadouce, based on what I was told about boosters meeting with Bohn in Hawaii, and all of the sudden Bohn annouces prior to the Nubs game that Hawkins was staying makes me believe that something happened either without Bohn's input, or Bohn was overruled on the decision.

Hawk could do one thing at this point. Shut his yap and win. He's got a roster of players he hand picked. It is put up or shut up time. So some people give you grief because you lose 2 out of every three?, boo freakin' hoo.

Dan Hawkins is a douche bag.. The guy has made his own bed.. the majority of fans supported him all the way up to the CSU game this year so he has no reason to complain about lack of fan support.. Fans don't support losers.. If he doesn't get that maybe he should find another ****ing profession..

    :yeahthat:

Hawkins crying about lack of support when 50,000+ are showing up to see him get his ass kicked by the likes of Missouri is really pretty funny.

I have actually been surprised by how well the support has stuck with the program. Having four straight years of sub .500 records including two straight 3-9 seasons usually results in a lot of fans disguised as empty seats. Getting embarrassed by teams like Toledo, CSU, Montana State, etc. as well as the blowouts to Missouri, etc. are good enough excuses for people who don't want to stick with the program to do something else with their time and money.

Surprisingly, last year we still had 45K in the stadium on a regular basis even later in the season when it was obvious that it was another bad season. Fans have been complaining on sites like this, in the comment section of the newspapers, on the radio etc. but considering the situation with the program that is not a bad thing. When people stop showing up, when people stop caring, when fans cease to be fans then the program is in real trouble.

My biggest fear with Hawk is that eventually fans will give up hope and go away, then it is much harder to get them back. We become a Big XII version of CSU with a small core of die-hard fanatics but don't have a big enough following to make people who try out the game feel like they are part of something big time. Then the media stops paying attention making it even harder to get the attention of potential fans.

Good ol Dan, the guy who hates excuses uses them day after day. Funny, that NC talk sure has died down and the minute dan realized he has 4 straight losing seasons, the " burned to the ground" comments come and as usual, blames the fans for not supporting him and the team. STFU and win games. Dan has done NOTHING at CU to earn support yet people still come.

The sooner he's gone the better.

If the Buffs go 9-3 next year, the national media will be right back there. I thought MtnBuff's point was pretty valid. It has been pretty amazing to see the support stick with the team for this long. However, I'd guess that if we start this season like we started last season, you won't see people going to the games even with 4 for 40 packs, or whatever else Bohn pulls. I think the tide has turned as far as support goes, and if the Buffs don't win early you'll see a nasty scene at late season games in Boulder.

Certainly, but the next step is the local media. Most people don't think about how much local media has to do with the financial success of athletic teams. That positive article every day in the local sports section, the 30 seconds of highlights after each game and mentions of the upcoming games in the week before a home game, the player profiles, the coach or player interviews on local radio, etc. all feed into the casual fan deciding that going to the game might be a fun way to spend a few hours and a bunch of dollars.

Trouble is that it works both ways, the media helps build interest but the media doesn't bother unless enough people are interested. CSU fans scream that they are not treated equally with CU in media exposure. Simple answer from the media is that CU has more viewers/readers/listeners who are interested, they cater to the audience. If the audience for CU increasingly doesn't care then the local media will cut back, especially with plenty of alternatives to devote their energy to.

Once that media focus is lost it is very hard to get it back. It becomes a chicken and egg thing, the media doesn't pay attention because the audience doesn't care, the audience doesn't care because the media doesn't remind them. At the same time the on field product is bad because financial resources aren't there, the resources aren't there because the product on the field is bad, to get the media attention back the product has to be better and the fans have to care, the fans don't care because the product is bad and the media doesn't remind them. All this happens while other programs continue to give their fans a reason to care and they continue to advance because caring fans are paying fans.

Eventually you end up with a perpetual bottom feeder who is everyones favorite homecoming opponent.
