Hawk's Tweet

Just a few spots left.. that doesn't excite me. Has Hawk ever said what his philosophy was regarding open scholarships? Does he prefer leaving a few open for walk-ons and such?

I do believe he'd like a couple spots available for awarding scholarships to deserving walk-ons every year. It's kind of necessary to do that if you want to build a real strong walk-on program (which he certainly has). But he's already awarded Stevens, who obviously deserved to be on scholarship for his senior year after winning the starting center job.

Other guys he'd consider would likiely be beyond 2 years removed from high school so they don't count against our numbers for the incoming class (count against the 85 but not the 25). I could see Espinoza and Walters (if he gets a 6th year medical exemption) being granted scholarships for next season. Bret Smith and Michael Silipo are also good possibilities for their senior year if we have openings... and they'll be important contributors to our special teams.

One other thing about Hawkins is that he is philosophically opposed to over-signing the way some coaches do. You might see him go over by a couple guys and greyshirt someone if everyone makes it in, but generally he'll end up under the limit instead of above. At least that's what we've seen so far.

Well I mean we seem to run around the mid 60s more than the low 70s with Hawk, so it seems like more than a few opens spots. I'd just like to see him dip into the 70s with scholarships a little more.
