The football team instituted a system of "accountability groups" this offseason. Coach Kiseau was talking about them during the talk he gave a few weeks ago. Apparently, the team got 8-9 players who 'drafted' their groups. So the guys who would be considered the most reliable & least likely to cause trouble got drafted first, and then down the line. If any person in the group screws up (ditches class, misses a workout, breaks rules, drinking, whatever), then the entire accountability group has to pay the penalty. The purpose of the exercize was two-fold. One, to keep kids out of trouble, and two, to send a message to the guys who were picked last that they have some work to do in order to gain the respect and trust of their teammates.

All indications are that the program is working wonderfully. I guess we haven't heard about any players screwing around this offseason, so it must be doing something.

    :congrats:

Wonder what the MySpace mood comments say amongst Katoa's accountability group?

Not to whistle pass the grave yard, but it has been nice to keep out of the Fulmer Cup standings so far this year.

Having the players accountable to each other is a fantastic idea.

That is an awesome idea, I would love to know who was picked last by their groups. Do they do a new draft each semester?

I'm in the other camp and would prefer to not be told who is in each group. The players are accountable to the university, to the staff, to each other and to themselves. They are not accountable to us in any capacity.

While it would be interesting to know who got picked last, it's not really any of our business. That would defeat the purpose of the program, I think. Instead of encouraging the kids to be more accountable to each other, it would humiliate kids unnecessarily.

Who says you get to pick at all? Maybe Montana Buff is the one picking. You ever think of that, smart guy?

This accountability group thing was just about the only worthwhile and interesting thing in Henderson´s article about the terror squad also known as the Colorado Buffaloes football team.

I agree with you in priciple. I would say, however, that each current Buffalo is responsible to all who played and built the program before him.

I agree, but conversely, I think that it would be neat to know who got picked in the first round. It could be a badge of pride for those who accomplish it.

Well now, I don't want sound negitive here because I think this is a great idea! However, the worst thing that can happen to any of the accountability groups is if one of the leaders screws up.

the response basically writes itself. think "your mom" "blow" "nat'y lite" "crackpipe" and "cheap"...

but, i have vowed to take a higher road than before.

so, i will instead just offer this:

fine retort fibby. i believe my very excellent DODGERS will surprise some of you this season but your opinion is, of course, valued.

Teams are always looking for ways to tie in the legacy of past players to the current team and there always seem to be a number of former players who want to maintain some form of positive connection with the current team.

I wonder if this would not be an opportunity to really take advantage of some of those guys who want to give something back to the program. Use some of the recent graduates of the program as unnofficial mentors/advisors to the accountability groups. Nobody knows the pressures/opportunities/dangers of being a scholarship athlete in a high profile sport like someone who has been there and successfully navigated it. They could have the credibility to speak to the current players along with the maturity to help keep young guys on an even keel.
