^^^^Right. Because being ranked and winning a bowl game is obviously less than what we are aiming for right now.

Let's be honest. If SJSU is playing in the Pac 12 they are likely not ranked or playing in a bowl game.

Lets be honest you POS. Sjsu barely lost to the furd and was a field goal away from beating the badgers in Madison. All with 2* talent.

So that makes them 0-2. I'm not saying this coach isn't going to get more out of his talent than Embree could. I am saying he can't sustain with 2* talent. Not sure why that makes me a POS. I think it is pretty much pointing out the obvious. I think the last 7 years of mediocre recruiting back me up on this one.

I actually think his ability to develop guys and overcome a losing mentality is what makes him the best hire for CU. Unlike other candidates we looked at he has taken a team that is down in the barrel and built them up. He built up there confidence and he built up their football IQ. He hired a strength coach to make them bigger and stronger. I think he knows what he is looking for and how to develop them. The problem is CU doesn't play in the WAC.

And the previous year their 2 star talent lost 57-3 to Stanford, 27-17 to a bad UCLA team, and lost to a 2 and 10 team in Idaho at home. Don't think for a minute that SJSU wasn't at an all time high this year when he took this job. There is no way he will be able to sustain in the Pac 12 with 2 star reaches. Will he be able to go 8-4 or 7-5. I think so. I think he is a good coach. I think he will do well in non conference games and will beat the teams he is supposed to. I just don't think the recruits he is targeting right now are going to be helping us build the program back to compete with Stanford or Oregon.

Like I have said many times however if Dillon or Sefo are the real deal at QB we will get there sooner than people believe. All you need is an elite QB and you are instantly competitive in college.

not neccessarily. I think the post is appropriate on topic, just not in a recruits thread so I moved to to the Barzil recruiting thread.

I agree with you, Robbie. Living in Utah, all I heard for years was Utah fans saying they should have been national champs in 2004 and 2008 when they went undefeated and how the Mountain West was just as good as the BCS conferences. Well, how's that argument working out for them now? Local sports radio here is predicting the Utes will go 4-8 next year. The week in-week out grind of a BCS schedule matters. Recruiting 2 and 3 star kids and playing against 4 and 5 star kids matters. SJSU would not succeed in this conference. Period. And the Buffs will have to do better both at recruiting and in player development to get the program back on track.

Sure, SJSU was at an all time high when he left. Let's not forget that they were on the verge of eliminating their football program before he got there though.

So year 2 was a work in progress, while year 3 was close to the finished product. I'm not going to knock him for struggling in his first or second season, because rebuilding a program is difficult. But he deserves a lot of credit for what SJSU accomplished last year. Those were his players, and they were 2 star recruits.

Give Coach Mac some time. If he comes close to what he was able to do with SJSU, we'll be in the mix for 4 and 5 star players in 3-5 years if things go right for us (which still remains unlikely).

3-5 years? Dude, seriously? It takes one year of improvement. Go from 1-11 to 4-8 and be competitive in games we should and 4*'s will show interest.

4 wins is not going to impress anyone if we beat CSU, Fresno, Bum**** Arkansas, and Washington Stank. We need signature wins. Like when Hawk beat OU.

I really, really doubt they care who we beat. Going from 1-11 and getting killed every game to 4-8 and being competitive will get them to notice. Also following your logic we should not sign any 4*'s for 3 years... we should have two right now.

It will be near impossible for us to beat Wazzu next year.

Wrong, Utah State was a fg away from beating Wiscy. That is why Gary Andersen was hired by Alvarez after Bielema left for Arky.

We will never out recruit USC. They have too many advantages, namely location and one of the best traditions in all of college football. They are the OU and UT in the BigXII wrapped up into one school in the Pac12. Everyone else is vying for the Okie Light/Aggy place in recruiting.

Good thing for us is, and everyone else, is that they can't get every guy they want due to scholarship reductions across the board AND probation.

This is why I am excited by the hire. I fully expect us to beat the teams we should and compete with most of the Pac 12 teams. I don't see why we can't compete with everyone not named Oregon and USC every year. I just think if we are going to win more than we lose in the Pac we better do better than 2 star Athlete type kids with recruiting.

Our offense will be better immediately, but defense is going to be the longer rebuild. You can't use schemes, zone-read, pistol spread, west coast offense tomfoolery on defense; you have to have the athletes. There are two other factors that we need to get going: the renovations to our facilities and the rumored uniform deal with Nike. Daaah was right in that nobody is going to be impressed by 4 wins, but 'Tini is right in that 4 wins plus other factors will sway some kids. Make CU exciting, provide some hope that better times are ahead, let Boulder work its magic during visits, and we'll be back in the mix in 3-4 years.

I like how the options presented in this thread appear to be outrecruit USC or recruit a team full of **.

We won't be out recruiting USC Oregon or Wash. I would just like to see us be in the mix with the rest of the Pac 12 for recruiting and bring in 4 or 5 difference makers every year.

You don't have to out recruit USC. But you do have to consistently have solid recruiting and hit on the players you do recruit. Get four top 30 classes in a row & you will have the talent to compete with most teams.

We didn't outrecruit USC or Texas or Florida or Ohio state with any of the teams that went to Orange/fiesta/cotton bowls. Hell, Byron White's team was probably chock full of guys who couldn't get a sniff from Army, U of Chicago or Notre Dame.

We don't need to "outrecruit" USC. We need to out-talent-develop them with our 3* kids.

This line comes up here a lot and I think it is a bit overplayed. The development of a player physically and probably mentally has a lot more to do with his personal characteristics than it does with coaching. Some guys that were lightly recruited are going to get bigger, faster, and stronger. Some are going to 'get it' in practice. And some aren't. This may have a little to do with coaching but I think that you can take it, from the outset, as a more-or-less random process. If you recruit a two-star linebacker that turns in to Ray Lewis, is that because you are an otherworldly coach, or is it because the player is simply a late bloomer? I say that it is mostly the latter.
