Now that the change has been made, it is going to be interesting to see what happens with recruiting. Our current verbals are in a holding pattern and we will have to see which assistants are kept on when the next coach takes over. My gut feeling (backed by comments from the recruits that Adam got yesterday):

Berglund-I think he is gone and I am not sure the next coach will be able to get him back in the fold.
Sherry-He had said a couple months ago that a lot would depend on Kiesau staying on. Kiesau may very well stay on, but I doubt it is in his current capacity. I think Sherry may stay on, but I think his verbal is tenuous and he will be hearing from other teams.
Daigh-He is very solid and will sign with the Buffs in February.
Farrow-He is solid and even if Hagan is not retained, I think he signs with the Buffs in February.
Kelley-He is a CU legacy, so I think he ends up signing with the Buffs in February.

The next coach will hopefully be here by the beginning of December to get some official visitors here in before the dead period. There are some JUCO QBs that are December graduates that might be worth a look, so we can get some competition in the Spring. I think the next coach will try to sign two QBs if possible.

Beyond that, we have a lot of official visits to use and a fair amount of scholarships to play around with. It will likely be a small class, but the new coach will have a chance to land some quality players, especially in So Cal. Several top players are still uncommitted.

THis was supposed to be a small class anyway right? I wouldn't expect much, I hope they get some good OL, and hopefully some DB/S.

Yes, the small class this recruiting cycle should lessen the impact of a new coach/staff getting a late start. Now, if they could hire and have the new coach in place by the 2nd week of December, that would be ideal given the situation.

I hope they (new staff) can hold onto one of the two QB recruits. After that, RB, DL, OL, CB, LB, all need to be addressed. That could get tricky with only 15 or so schollies to give.

Don't know if this is just window dressing, but could be good news ...

Colorado's top football recruit of the 2011 class is holding firm to his commitment in the wake of Dan Hawkins' firing.

Brock Berglund, a quarterback out of Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying he remains "as committed as ever to the football program at the University of Colorado."

Berglund committed to CU in early July, citing his close relationship with first-year offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau. He's one of five early commitments the Buffaloes have.
"I have spoken with coach Kiesau and I have an understanding of what the process of finding a new coach looks like," Berglund said. "I am confident that (CU athletic director) Mike (Bohn) will make the decision that is in the best interest for the program while going through this difficult process. I also have confidence that (interim) coach (Brian) Cabral can step in and do a great job until a permanent decision is made."

"My primary focus is my academics and preparing for the playoffs in football," Berglund said. "These are certainly difficult times and my prayers go out to coach Hawkins and his family and the entire coaching staff, as well as the players, and the administrators at the university."

My thoughts are this will become a better class now that Hawk the clown is gone.

Hopefully they can find a Kordell stewart type qb with a gun for an arm. DL of course needs to be addressed as well as db.

Just a hunch on my part, but I don't think we'll lose any commitments, and will probably pick up a few once the new coach is announced. The Sword of Damacles hanging over Hawk's neck for the last year had to be hurting his efforts to recruit.

I doubt we see commitments immediately after a new coach is announced, mainly because there are no assurances that offers Hawkins made to players are still good. We also will not see any visits this week or next most likely. It is going to be fun to follow in mid-December and January though.

I'm hoping for a slight improvement even though whoever becomes HC will have a late start. The current small group of commits already knew Hawkins was probably leaving and it's too small a group to effect much even if some were to de-commit -- which doesn't seem indicated.

My feeling is that a new HC could help restore some enthusiasm for the program, and moving to the PAC-12 makes us an interesting choice for PAC-12 region prospects who could start early here. The newness of the opportunity makes us somewhat unique. And the sanctions against USC might allow for some inroads into USC's recruiting home turf. I have to admit that I'm looking at the prospect of hiring Bienemy with an eye towards selling L.A. kids on coming here, something we wouldn't have been able to do under Hawkins.

I think the QB recruiting is the most up in the air until the head coach is named. The QBs certainly want to know what type of system the new guy is going to run. If it's a current coordinator or head coach somewhere else, there is a chance that a QB that they are recruiting could come with them (see RG III who ended up at Baylor after Art Briles left UofH). If it's Mac or EB, then I think they are in the position to target a top flight QB and sell the, "I need a QB to turn this thing around and you are my guy."

I would hope any guy as the next HC could say this.

What I'm saying is that a current coach is more likely to have a current recruit to bring along while Mac or EB wouldn't, so they would more likely knock on some doors of 4 and 5 star QBs just to see if one might be open to changing his mind.

The concern I have isn't over the current commitments, but the most recent class of players. While it wasn't the greatest class in terms of talent there are many with upside but coaching turnover and new systems might see several transfer. This would put the pressure back on the new staff to get a bigger class to make up for the ones lost.

If we lose on the two QB commits, I think a JUCO would be a very smart decision (and maybe even if they still both commit).

we need d-line, and some RB's who are over 200lbs, always need o-line

I wanted to look a little deeper into the coaching changes and how they might impact recruiting specific kids:

I'd think that we can get some kids to look at us all over again with the new staff, and it would probably start with the guys that are already targeted by our staff that has been in the Pac-10 recruiting already...

Guys that are targets of our top two defensive recruiters: Cabral and Tuiasosopo:
LB - K.T. Tuumalo (a rush OLB prospect that could fit in really well for us)
DE - Aulelio Olomua (an AZ TE/DE hybrid that has few offers yet)

Steve Marshall and Brian Cabral were both recruiting this kid:
OL - Tyler Johnstone (committed to Oregon early, but seemed like his academic goals didn't match his football commit)

Targets that already had CU on their radar already, but also a relationship with one of our new coaches:
DT - Todd Barr (Arizona's Tuiasosopo is recruiting him)
WR - Patrick Onwuasor (another Tui target).
DB - Darrius Morrow (a CA JUCO CB that could really help us out, recruited by Tui)

Heard Ringo just say that Nick Sherry's scholarship offer has been rescinded, and they got Mustoe to de-commit from UCLA and come to Boulder. Embree is definitely taking things in a different direction.

I'll have some faith in JE & EB's ability to assess talent. Both Sherry and Farrow are apparently off to different pastures, and I'll wish them both luck. Not that Rivals ratings are always correct, but Sherry and Farrow are both at the lower end of 3* recruits (5.5), and Sherry was a 2* per Scout and ESPN. Both only showed having 4 schools offer, so JE & EB certainly don't appear high on either one.

Of course, if you look at CU's commitment list right now, it's down to four commits. Here's hoping we come on strong after the new year!

So true. They're looking (rightly so) at quality over quantity.

Keep an eye on Polynesian kids, wide receivers, cornerbacks, and anyone who had UCLA interest but is an academic question mark (Embree has maintained a friendship with Neuheisel).

Duncan's Scholarship offer was rescinded? Where did you see that. I don't have a Rivals or Scout account but I thought we were still very high on him.

Yeah, a big head-scratcher here. We need young DB's and WR's and that is where Duncan looked to be able to make an impact.

I don't see the reason for doing that to Duncan after he made such a commitment to CU already.
