If we're going to hire a head coach who has never been a coordinator

There are lots of rumors out there that Bieniemy is going to be the next head coach, and that he wants to hire Jon Embree as his offensive coordinator. (Similarly, there are rumors that Embree might be head coach, and he would hire Bieniemy as his offensive coordinator) Neither Bieniemy nor Embree has ever been a true offensive coordinator.

Why on earth would CU hire a head coach with no coordinator experience, and then allow him to hire an offensive coordinator who has never been a coordinator, either??

Am I the only one who thinks that sounds like a strange formula for success?

Nope. The EB Embree combo makes me nervous.

Why on earth would you hire a coach that hasn't been involved in football or recruited anyone in roughly 20 years, not to mention is 70 years old and thus only provides CU with a short term solution?

Doesn't bother me one bit. Look at the success we had with Kiesau.

McCartney was given a 10 year (i.e. "lifetime") contract in about 1992 or so. If he had coached out that contract, he would have coached until 2002. Would you have been comfortable with that?

McCartney's age is of no concern to me. There are plenty of older coaches out there. His time away from the game is irrelevant to me. It's not like he's been in a cave, with no exposure to the outside world since 1994. If you look into it at all you will find plenty of people who say that McCartney has remained involved and connected with the coaching world.

Have you not been paying attention? If they don't hire Mac as the next FB coach, PA will stop all donations to the CU medical school and related departments. Clearly we are not concerned about a top 25 football team. Our goal is to have a top 25 medical school campus, and if PA does not donate this dream can never happen.

Yes, there are "a few" older coaches out there and they are mainly "figure heads" to the university. Guys that are so well known that they can simply recruit well by showing up and saying, "Hi I'm Joe Paterno, I'm Bobby Bowden" etc.

Unfortunately Mac being out of the game for as long as he has been has absolutely 0 name recognition to an 18 year old kid (crap, the guy retired when these kids were 1-2 years old). I have a hard time believing an 18 year old kid would relate more to a guy like Mac than EB.

I'm sure he still has many of the coaching intangibles to be successful, but I question he still has the coaching relationships to develop a truly successful staff around him. I was all for him coming on if he was packaged with the EB's and Embree's, so that CU could have a long term solution to their future (i.e. maybe a passing of the torch to one of them), but without that I'm growing ever-so hesitant to the idea of Mac for HC.

That is the biggest BS rumor I've heard during this entire process.

Embree was pretty much the OC @ UCLA. I remember him advising Skippy & Barney on when to call timeouts etc. Real cool customer and smart game manager.

*official title @ UCLA -- Embree served as assistant head coach/tight ends and passing game coordinator.

This board does get alot of mileage out of Bill Snyder (aka the Crypt Keeper) jokes. Guess we wouldn't be able to throw those stones anymore.

I would have concerns but it would not keep me up at night. I think the experience at the pro level that both of them have is a good substitiute for coordinator experience at the college level. The hours the pros put in on attacking a defense is incredible and the complexity level is much greater than college. One thing is CU would be a lights out recruiting source.

I just remember how badly many nub fans wanted Turner Gill as HC. So, what are the positives and negatives for EB?

    Positives:
    CU guy
    Mac guy
    Great recruiter
    Great passion
    Loves CU
    NFL experience
    A Californial guy
Supposedly will bring in a great staff

    Negatives:
    Can be, umm, over opinionated
May not be a gret fit in Boulder
never been a HC or OC
Will have some detractors on campus

Anything I'm missing. No doubt I am.

the Pro's outweigh the Con's. And CU is Scooter's Dream job....he is a great fit in Boulder. Get used to it!
