    ... Or does the 2009 Buffs' personnel, especially on offense, match up well with the 2001 Big 12 Champion Buffs?

    Quarterback:
    2001 - Craig Ochs and Bobby Pesavento split the starts, neither a fixture in the CU record books;
    2009 - Cody Hawkins and Tyler Hansen - you know the story.

    Running back:
    2001 - Chris Brown and Bobby Purify split the carries; both go for over 900 yards;
    2009 - Speedy Stewart and Darrell Scott looking to share the carries;

    Offensive line:
    2001 - Five players in for at least 800 of 886 offensive plays. All five drafted by the NFL (or, in the case of Marwan Hage, the CFL);
    2009 - Buffs loaded with potential NFL talent on the offensive line;

    Tight end:
    2001 - Mackey Award winner Daniel Graham;
    2009 - Mackey Award finalist Riar Geer;

    Wide Receiver:
    2001 - Possession receiver Derek McCoy; some speed to keep defenses honest;
    2009 - Possession receiver Scotty McKnight; some speed to keep defenses honest.

    We remember the 2001 Buffs as 10-3 Big 12 Champions. But in August, they were just a bunch of guys coming off of a 3-8 season in 2000.

    I'm just sayin' .... :thumbsup:

    Rep, good thoughts! After the season is over, let's hope the comparisons are even more proven.

    The thing with Graham was that he was like having a 6th lineman on the field. That was huge for the running game that year.

    But I do think this team looks similar on offense (and the expectations are similarly low).

    One difference is that our 2009 defense should be better than 2001 (apologies to Jashon if he reads Allbuffs).

    Let's just hope this team doesn't mirror the 2001 team as far as losing their first game.

    Not trying to jinx us, just sayin' that's one similarity we don't want with the 2001 team. :huh:

    Rep. May the mention of first game-losing vibes and people named "Montana" be of little jinx.

    To add to the similarities, Johnson and Houston supplemented our go-to run guys like Sumler and Lockridge may this season. Suspect kicking game, though very confident in the punting abilities. If Smith, Cha'pelle and Burney could combine the productivity of Strickland, Lewis and Moorer I don't think many would complain. I'll say the current linebackers are better but 2001 has the edge on the DL. :gobuffs:
