Is it me or is the secondary actually playing pretty decent?

I know the secondary was a huge concern coming into the season, and rightfully so, but I have to say I think we have played pretty damn well back there so far. Both Browns have made some plays and the safeties have solid. Dykes looks so much better than last year. The injury to Walters is a little worrisome, but I'm glad Perkins is getting some valuable playing time.

The biggest disappointment on defense has to be the LBs. Outside of Mohler, they have been very average.

They have been pretty decent IMO. I was a little perplexed by G. McKay on the late TD run by Ogbannaya though, if you have it on tape, watch it and maybe you'll see what I think I saw....

I like the way the CB's are playin too. The only thing nitpick I have is the corners seem to prone to missing tackles when they come up on outside run support.

From what was supposedly mine and most everyone elses' biggest concern going into the start of the season, they are definately the least of all my concerns now....they've played very well, caused some big plays/turnovers and overall have been the most impressive group of any

I think the defense hasnt been playing that bad all together. It doesnt help when your offense has 13 minutes less time of possession and can't kick a fg to save there life. I think Mohler and Jeff Smart have played well and Brad Jones has been pretty good at rushing the QB. Now if special teams and the offense would give them some help. Wishful thinking

Cha'pelle Brown is a stud! Very little recognition but he is one of our best players imo. WVU's coach Stewart said he could be an All-American.

Okay, I like G. McKay, I think he has played well this season. I am not looking to bust on him. There may be a perfectly good explanation, and here's comes the dreaded but, when Ogbannaya was going in for the score late in the second, he had his head down and was lunging for the endzone, G. McKay just looked like he hopped out of the way. He wasn't really in a position nor did he have the angle to really stop him but it just looked odd to me. Sort of like how Deion Sanders used to just push guys out of bounds or sort of grab on to the runner instead of delivering a blow. It could be nothing, I was just wondering if anybody else saw it.

ok, I thought you meant end of the game, not the 1/2. Yeah I recall it. Didnt think much of it to be honest - at the time anyway. Who knows. But I always thought Sanders was a wussy for not hitting anyone. That much I know.

I'd still take him in a heartbeat, if there ever was a shutdown corner, that dude was it.....

Just looked at the stats - the D has given up 4 passing TD's this year, one of which was that fluky little flick from McCoy to the RB when the entire secondary was rushing in for run support.

I've been happy with their ability to limit the big plays, although I do think they give too much of underneith stuff that annoys the hell out of me.

For what was supposed to be a weakness, they have exceeded my expectations. Jalil Brown is really coming into his own. That dude has the size and speed to be a shut-down corner if he keeps improving his technique.

I agree, I have been impressed with Jalil. I kind of thought Jimmy Smith would be the guy waiting in the wings, but Jalil is a little ahead of J. Smith for the time being. IMO both of thses guys have great upsides....

Yeah, Jalil is making some plays. Smith really has been hindered by the injuries in Fall camp. Hopefully, he can finish the season strong. We need all hands on deck for conference play. Next year, we should have a pretty good trio of experienced corners.

Who was the asshat that said we would be the worst secondary in the MAC (or something like that)?

Guys, let's settle down a little here. McCoy did whatever he wanted to all day long. The interception rattled him a bit, and he didn't throw at all the next series, but once he started throwing again, he picked us apart.

I'll agree that the secondary isn't as awful as we feared, but it's still needs improvement.

The LBs have been kind of invisible. Jones has been decent, and Moehler has been good (save for a couple plays against UT), but where's Sipili? Where's Burton? I think I've heard these guys' names called once all season so far. They were supposed to be the strength of the squad.

Take away the fluke TD pass that went for 65 yards and his night was pretty average. 22/29 for 197 yards is nothing special. A great completion percentage for sure, but we mostly avoided giving up big yardage in the passing game except for that one play.

The secondary still needs improvement, but I would say the CBs are starting to come along. Absolutely agree about the LBs.

I'm very bummed about the play of our lb's. They seem slooooow and have missed a bunch of tackles. We get rippy, major and katoa next year so...mohler has been the best and smart not bad, jones is better at a de position.

Our secondary hasn't been tested as much because we are doing a poor job of stopping the run. KU,KSU and MU will throw a ton so we'll see how we are.

Mckay is sloooooow and this playinjg 10-15 yds of the wr crap has got to stop.I'm not a big fan of greg brown or collins.

Good analogy! And I might add, that I really like what I've seen from Mr. Shawn Mohler

Secondary has been pretty terrible on run support on the edges. Otherwise it's mirroring last season where our defense held up pretty well until a lack depth killed us.

Jalil is really starting to play well as is brown.Mckay has struggled big tim.Smith is still trying to get in the groove.

Have we really been tested yet honestly? WV,FSU and texas really didn't go deep to often, and that's probably more of a case of our cb's playing 40 yds off the line of scrimmage.:smile2:

We'll find out soon enough how good we are in the secondary.

There is no doubt that the Defensive backfield has been the one consistently dependable part of the team. I trust the Buff D going into 3rd or 4th and short. Between Dykes, Cha'pelle and now Jalil, the backfield is good for a pick or two against heisman candidates or otherwise. Mohler and Jones have had their fair share of tackels.

I have but one critism. There have not been that many punishing hits delivered. With Colt McCoy coming out, I kept waiting for someone to jack him up Klatt style, but McCoy was never hit squarely and planted on his keister. Lots of arm tackles with a few yards after contact given up.

I'll counter this one by saying that McCoy is a option QB (Isn't he their leading rusher?) and can make you pay if really miss on your tackle.
